In case you missed it, Beyoncé is in the middle of an historic world tour — her first in seven years! — and the jaw-dropping outfits she’s been sporting have been just as captivating as her Renaissance Tour performances.

RELATED: All of Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour Looks

We covered the first leg of Beyoncé’s Renaissance Your looks above, and now that Queen Bey is on North American soil, we’ll do our best to log all her new concert ensembles here. First up: Canada’s very own Toronto, where Beyoncé and her wildly talented crew of backup singers and dancers performed two epic shows on July 8 and 9.

Toronto, Ontario

Beyoncé kicked off the North American leg of her Renaissance Tour by opening the show in a custom Tiffany & Co. Elsa Peretti mesh dress. The one-a-kind creation featured chains of bezel-set stones on approximately 150 feet of mesh ribbon that took over 200 hours to make. Bey complemented the look with (what else?) a Tiffany & Co. jewellery — vintage earrings and a custom anklet.

Later on in the July 8 show at Toronto’s Rogers Center, the queen debuted another new tour outfit that was giving Destiny’s Child “Survivor” (IYKYK). The pop star’s camouflage look was comprised of a sequined bodysuit, a custom sequined cropped jacket by Adidas x Ivy Park, and thigh-high heeled boots. She accessorized the shimmering camo moment with knit gloves, oversized black sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat that she took off to showcase her honey-blonde inches.

For night two in Toronto, Bey busted out yet another sparkly new outfit in the form of a custom lace Fendi dress with honeycomb-inspired crystal embroidery based on the house’s Fendi Couture Spring/Summer 2021 collection.

Philadelphia

For her first Renaissance Tour concert in the U.S., Beyoncé slipped into a custom Givenchy mini-dress that was accented by intricate cut-outs and flourishes of fringe. The singer accessorized the dress with ankle-tie heels, sheer black opera gloves, and Tiffany & Co. diamonds.

Bey chose another sequin-covered camo outfit from Ivy Park for her Philadelphia tour stop, this time a two-piece set with attached gloves and chaps-like detailing that extended into her boots.

Finally, the superstar selected a dramatic silver look from Valentino to close her Philly show. The ensemble featured a miles-long cape, and she finished the look off with sparkly boots — and a matching silver horse, naturally.

Nashville

For the next stop on her U.S tour, Bey fully committed to the disco cowboy aesthetic she’s been sporting all Renaissance season. Wearing a glittery red dress, the “Cuff It” singer accessorized with patent leather cowboy boots and a statement belt and necklace.

She then changed into a hot pink look that would give Margot Robbie and the rest of the Barbie Movie cast a run for their money. True Beyhive members will be quick to clock the similarities of this Ivy Park outfit to the one she wore in Amsterdam and Toronto. But instead of a gown, Beyoncé turned it into a fringed romper and jacket and added another pair of thigh-high boots.

Then to top it all off, Queen B collaborated with British fashion royalty, Alexander McQueen, on an embroidered bodysuit with matching gloves and shoes.

The Renaissance Tour picks back up on July 17 in Louisville, Kentucky and we can’t wait to see what Beyoncé wears next.

Women in politics get a lot of flack for their fashion choices. Hillary Clinton’s pantsuits have inspired think pieces. Michelle Obama’s sleeveless silhouettes were heavily scrutinized. Even Kamala Harris’s skinny jeans have been the topic of controversy. All in all, it’s tricky being a stylish woman in the White House. But Issa Rae, who plays President Barbie in the upcoming Barbie movie, has used the film’s viral press tour to craft a new kind of commander-in-chief uniform.

RELATED: Margot Robbie’s Transformation Into Barbie Is Officially Complete

President Barbie has been around since 1992, with Mattel releasing new iterations of the doll over the years. And like everything in the franchise’s plastic universe, it’s a pretty glitzy gig. It’s also decidedly low-stakes, with responsibilities like adding cherries on top of sundaes. (Delicious and important!) For the live-action film, Rae helped envision President Barbie’s costume: a ballgown and a pageant-ready sash that reads “President” in bubble letters. “It was tapping into who six to eight-year-old me thought a female president would look like, and living in that world really informed how I played the president,” she told Teen Vogue.

So it should come as no surprise that to promote the film, Rae and her stylist Wouri Vice have been treating the press tour as a glam-filled campaign trail. She’s been giving presidential waves, donning coordinated sets, and of course, wearing a lot of pink — even though she hates the colour. That’s a sacrifice in the name of public service.

Photography by Getty Images

At the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles on July 9, Issa Rae was in true President Barbie form. While gesturing a classic crowd-facing wave on the pink carpet, she wore a custom floor-grazing Marc Bouwer gown with a plunging chest cutout, structured shoulders and a statement bow detail. The bicep-bearing design reportedly took inspiration from Michelle Obama, and the regal velvet fabric further commanded a powerful presence.

Photography by Getty Images

A few days later, at the Barbie premiere in London, Issa Rae stepped out in two striking looks. For the screening itself, she wore a hot pink mini dress with a structured bodice and a dramatically ruched leg slit. Later, at the photocall, she emerged in a ’60s-inspired PatBo dress with a multicoloured swirling design and long green feather trim. It’s a retro look that would undoubtedly make Jackie O proud.

Photography by Getty Images

Her other London outings emitted reimagined preppy style. On July 12, she wore a high-waisted pink leather miniskirt with a white tank top and matching sunglasses. Later that day, she changed into a midriff-bearing two-piece set with bedazzled buttons by Self-Portrait. She commemorated the leg of the press trip with an Instagram post captioned, “This Barbie is on strike,” a reference to actors joining the ongoing writers’ strike in Hollywood. Amazing styling and a show of solidarity with her constituents? A well-rounded presidential slay. And just one of many.

Last month, while in Australia, she leaned into power suits, with a structured multicoloured blazer dress, a neon slouchy suit, and a bright monochrome ensemble that featured an oversized frilly bow in place of a tie.

For the Barbie celebration party in Sydney, she opted for a Givenchy maxi dress, with a sheer design and a slip underneath. This seamless wardrobe shift encapsulates the essence of the Mattel-made president. After all, when you’re the leader of Barbie Land, your duties are saccharine instead of severe — and the same goes for your outfits.

Photography by Getty Images

That’s not to say some of her looks haven’t been more conservative. Kicking off the press tour at a Beverly Hills photocall in June, her monochromatic cream-coloured ensemble — comprising wide-leg pants and a matching top à la quiet luxury — stood out as a relaxed interpretation of the traditional buttoned-up pantsuit. From mini-dresses to sophisticated separates, Issa Rae’s sartorial take on Madam President captures what would happen if leading a country was all about throwing impromptu dance parties and decorating frozen desserts. In other words: No dress code, just vibes.

Sure, it may not all fly in the actual Oval Office. But that’s neither here nor there. This Barbie is a President! And she has our vote.

No one’s doing Barbiecore better than Margot Robbie this summer. As the Australian actress travels the globe to promote her titular role in the highly-anticipated live-action Barbie movie, her style has been heavily inspired by the iconic Mattel doll’s fashion sense, with every outfit looking like it was perfectly plucked out of Barbie Land.

And, between the seemingly endless brand collaborations, elaborate press events and unique experiential marketing tactics (we’re looking at you, Barbie Dreamhouse Airbnb) promoting the film, it only makes sense that Robbie would lean into this one-of-a-kind character’s style.

Robbie is trying her hand at method dressing — which, for some actors, is the process of dressing in the aesthetic of the character they play or movie they’re in — and her style is clearly deliberate, detail-oriented and, of course, extremely pink. These outfit choices are helping to blur the lines between where Robbie ends and Barbie begins, making her appear as one and the same with the classic character and further solidifying her status as one of the biggest movie stars of our time.

At the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles on July 9, Robbie wore perhaps her most literal Barbie look yet, solidifying that she is now and forever in her Barbie era. The actor transformed into 1960s Barbie for the pink carpet premiere, rocking a custom black sequinned Schiaparelli couture gown with matching opera gloves.

Photography by Getty Images

And last week, Robbie was on a whirlwind Barbie-dressing streak that was nearly impossible to keep track of. There was her very ’90s “Totally Hair: 25th Anniversary” Barbie doll reference on July 7 (complete with crimped hair and groovy printed minidress, not to mention an epic vintage Versace moment a few days earlier and the below 1984 “Day to Night” Barbie look capture by Robbie’s hairstylist Bryce Scarlett.

On Australia’s Bondi Beach on June 29, Robbie wore another Barbie ensemble that appeared to have been borrowed directly from the iconic doll. Although the outfit, surprisingly, didn’t feature any pink, Robbie wore a custom black and white striped Hervé Léger mini-dress, Barbie’s classic white-rimmed vintage sunglasses and black Manolo Blahnik heeled mules as a nod to the first-ever Barbie doll which was released in 1959.

A post shared by Andrew Mukamal (@andrewmukamal)

The look, which was initially shared by Robbie’s stylist, Andrew Mukamal, on Instagram, is strikingly similar to the doll without it being an exact replica. The 1959 outfit consisted of a black and white strapless leotard while Robbie went for a more modern adaptation with a mini as she paid tribute to the ensemble. The references didn’t just stop at the clothes and accessories, though, as Robbie also sported a high, retro-inspired ponytail, which looks strikingly similar to the hairstyle the original doll wears.

Robbie even remained on-theme as she touched down in Australia earlier this week. As she walked through the airport, the star wore a vintage pink Chanel blazer while carrying the chicest matching light-pink luggage set that we could totally imagine Barbie using to travel the world.

She exemplified her commitment to emulating Barbie’s iconic style once again when she attended a press stop for the film in Los Angeles last weekend. As she channelled her inner doll, Robbie sported two all-pink looks during the trip that were almost too on-point.

The first consisted of a light pink, two-piece bustier and pleated miniskirt Bottega Veneta set and coordinating Manolo Blahnik peep-toe heels. In photos that her stylist once again shared on Instagram, Robbie truly couldn’t have looked any more Barbie-like as she enthusiastically posed in front of a perfectly matching pink convertible with a matching handbag and the iconic white sunglasses, of course.

While attending a press event in Beverly Hills the next day, Barbie once again came to life through Robbie as the actress wore a pink polka-dot halter Valentino mini-dress with a yellow shoulder bag and white Manolo Blahnik pumps. We’d be remiss if we didn’t note that we’re sensing a theme with the star’s favoured-footwear choice — who knew Barbie was such a Manolo fan? If their universes were to ever collide, we’re sure Carrie Bradshaw and Barbie would become besties over this shared obsession alone.

Photography by Getty Images

Robbie’s commitment to method dressing for the role isn’t new either. Back in April at CinemaCon 2023 for one of the film’s first promotional stops, Robbie sported a pink and white gingham two-piece Prada ensemble that was reminiscent of two dresses Barbie wears in one of the movie’s first trailers.

Some of Robbie’s co-stars have also received the method-dressing memo and are leaning into their character’s fashion senses as well.

Ryan Gosling, who plays one of the many Kens in the film, already went viral for his CinemaCon 2023 look that consisted of a pink sweater and a white T-shirt with “From Director Greta Gerwig” written across the front in Barbie font. And the Canadian movie star mostly recently channelled his real-life Kenergy last night in Toronto.

At the Canadian press event, Gosling sported a head-to-toe Gucci look consisting of a pastel blue suit with a pink shirt. Simu Liu, who plays a fellow Ken in the movie, also attended the press stop and showed off his Barbie-inspired look with a striped pink shirt under a retro green leather jacket and brown trousers.

In just the past few months, this cast, and particularly Robbie, have proven just how creative they can be as they dive deeper into the method dressing opportunities this film presents. And why shouldn’t they? There’s perhaps no other franchise that is as fun, carefree and colourful as Barbie, and it’s great to see the stars taking full advantage of all the fashionable, once-in-a-career outfit choices they have. After all, it’s Barbie’s World, we’re just living in it.

This Barbie is freeing the nipple on the red carpet! Singer Dua Lipa wore a crystal mesh gown to the world premiere of the highly anticipated Barbie movie on July 9. And while most interpretations of Barbiecore have been either replicas of iconic Barbie outfits or head-to-toe pink (for the record, no complaints here!), Lipa’s custom chainmail Bottega Veneta look — whose all-over shine gave it an almost wet appearance — was the perfect modern fashion choice for her Mermaid Barbie character.

Dua’s look was right on trend — naked dresses (and MIA bras) are having a prolonged moment, as evidenced most recently by at the Fall 2023 couture shows in Paris where the transparent trend appeared in street style looks, on the runways of Jean Paul Gaultier and Schiaparelli, and on Florence Pugh, who famously freed the nipple wearing sheer Valentino. For the Barbie world premiere, Dua Lipa accessorized her shimmery mesh moment with matching undies and jewellery by Tiffany & Co.

Dua Lipa, of course, has a buzzy cameo in Greta Gerwig’s star-studded Barbie movie that hits theatres on July 21. The pop star also appears on the film’s sure-to-be epic soundtrack with the summer dance bop “Dance the Night” alongside artists like Lizzo, Charli XCX, Nicki Minaj and Billie Eilish — the latter two both attended the L.A. premiere, too. And no, their outfits didn’t disappoint.

There’s perhaps no other movie star these days who takes as many style risks as Florence Pugh. The British actress has quite the track record when it comes to her daring fashion choices and Florence Pugh added to that list once again with another free the nipple moment.

RELATED: Florence Pugh Is the Queen of Hair Transformations

While attending the Valentino Fall 2023 Couture show on July 5, Pugh went braless in a sheer, lilac gown that featured layers of draped fabric, a plunging neckline and a ruffled collar. She looked both edgy and delicate as the dress’ shocking transparency and revealing backless silhouette directly contrasted with its light material and flowy train — a uniquely audacious combination that the Little Women star has worn on several occasions.

She also debuted a fresh take on her buzzcut, which she first sported at this year’s Met Gala, as she turned heads with a new bright pink colour. The movie starlet allowed her tulle Valentino gown and the vibrant shade of her latest hairstyle to shine by pairing the outfit with a classic glam makeup look, minimalistic diamond earrings and her iconic septum ring.

Between her new ‘do and the shockingly sheer dress, fashion fans quickly took to social media as they shared Pugh’s latest couture look. And, while some championed her expressive style choices, others weren’t the biggest fans of the unique look. But after last year’s controversy, this shouldn’t be a surprise.

In case you don’t remember, during last year’s couture fashion week in Rome, the actress generated a ton of controversy online as she arrived at the Valentino Fall 2022 Couture show wearing a sheer, pink gown, with her nipples fully visible.  At the time, Florence Pugh addressed the nipple controversy on her Instagram by saying, “Listen, I knew when I wore that incredible Valentino dress that there was no way there wouldn’t be a commentary on it. Whether it be negative or positive, we all knew what we were doing. I was excited to wear it, not a wink of me was nervous. I wasn’t before, during or even now after.”

After a lengthy caption in which she called out body-shamers and double standards, she ended the post by sharing a photo of her covering her nipples with her fingers and completed her caption with, “Oh! The last slide is for those who feel more comfortable with that inch of darker skin to be covered… #fuckingfreethefuckingnipple”

A post shared by Florence Pugh (@florencepugh)

Pugh followed up the controversial pink Valentino dress a few months later with a different see-through, nipple-freeing look in October 2022. In another head-to-toe Valentino look, Pugh sported a sheer, sequin-detailed crop top and maxi skirt set as she attended Spring 2023 Paris fashion week — which also caught a lot of media attention.

Back in September 2022, Pugh seemingly made a different kind of statement through her audacious outfit choice at the premiere of Olivia Wilde’s film Don’t Worry Darling, in which she starred opposite Harry Styles and, allegedly, endured a ton of backstage drama while making the movie. As she attended the red carpet in none other than a Valentino Fall 2022 couture glittery, sheer dress with feathery heels and a classic old-Hollywood-esque glamour beauty look, some onlookers suspected that the actress’ bold style choice was sending a message of defiance in response to how she’d been treated surrounding the release of the film. And, while she and her cast-mates outfits each had their own individual style, Pugh’s look did not complement any of her co-stars’, making the few group shots from the event look chaotic and out-of-sync.

Yet, Pugh did drop some hints that this may have been her intention with wearing the daring look all along. When asked what she found inspiring about working on the film during the premiere, she seemingly confirmed suspicions of behind-the-scenes drama as she said, “I think it’s very very inspiring to see a woman push back and say ‘no,’ and question everything. It’s very exciting to see a woman do that on and off camera.” Knowing the details of the drama surrounding the film, that defiant attitude certainly came through in her outfit choice for the Hollywood occasion.

From her most-talked-about looks of just the past few years, the actor has certainly proved that she’s consistently one to watch both on and off the red carpet. While she’s proven to be loyal to Valentino for her outfits, the question remains: what will she wear next? Perhaps Florence Pugh will wear more free the nipple-inspired looks as she gears up to promote her role in the second instalment of the highly-anticipated Dune series? Only time will tell what Pugh’s next major fashion move will be, but we’ll surely be keeping an eye on her ever-evolving style.

Do you have to be a sports fan to appreciate a good athletic outfit? The answer is an unequivocal no. Just look to skiing. You can embrace your inner ski bunny without ever hitting the cold icy slopes by wearing your cutest intarsia knit and furry boots for après. And do you think those girlies wearing two-piece exercise sets topped with oversized white shirts are all coming from pilates? The same goes for tennis — follow the Kate Middleton Wimbledon style playbook and be the most stylish courtside spectator in colourful day dresses, playful prints (including a penchant for polka dots) and crisp tailoring.

From the minty fresh Balmain blazer that was giving vintage Princess Diana and perfectly pleated skirt to her bouncy blowout, the royal’s ensemble was a bullseye (reader, the author knows this is not a tennis analogy) for the tennis tournament’s somewhat conservative “formal daywear” dress code.

Here, we round up some of the Princess of Wales’ most valuable fashion plays when it comes to taking in a little tennis.

There are a few things we can be absolutely certain of when it comes to Cardi B. She likes to be a little chaotic on Twitter. She knows how to make a going-out anthem. And she will never, under any circumstance, miss an opportunity to serve a look. Currently in Paris for couture week, Cardi B has already emerged as the street style star to rival the runways.

RELATED: The Most Exciting Street Style At Fall 2023 Couture Week in Paris

Arguably the most prestigious and exclusive event of the fashion calendar, couture week is brimming with exceptional craftsmanship, intricate details and ultra-VIP guest lists. It’s intense, and yes, a little ridiculous — and Cardi B revels in the silliness of it all. Since the couture Fall 2023 shows kicked off on July 3, Miss Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar (yep, that’s her real name!) has been in on the joke, while sporting extravagant ensembles with the help of her stylist Kollin Carter.

To be fair, in a post-Doja-Cat-covered-in-Swarovski-crystals world, no outfit at couture week is really that surprising. But Cardi B has managed to push the envelope by blending clothing with performance. Favouring body-hugging bodices, feathery mania and blinged-out accessorizing, the star continues to bring her Grammy-winning artistic presence to each new ensemble. Is there anything more couture than that?

To kick off the week, the 30-year-old rapper sat front row at Schiaparelli show in a custom ensemble. She walked up the steps of the venue in a voluminous feathered cape atop a long black dress embellished with the brand’s signature gold detailing. Layered bangles were stacked on her wrists, and dangling gold-plated ears served as avant-garde earrings. Appearing particularly avian-like, she extended out her arms while posing for pictures — like a bird ready to take flight.

A few hours later, Cardi B attended the Thom Browne runway presentation in a new, equally campy look. Wearing a tweed suit dress with decidedly conservative tailoring, she added Cardi-esque embellishments with a gold chain link belt, a clock-shaped handbag and a towering, view-obstructing headpiece. Seated front row between Diane Keaton and Anna Wintour, the “Money” rapper emitted the aesthetic ease of a well-do-to older woman, while bringing her penchant for revealing risk-taking into the mix. And you know what? It works!

Diane Keaton, Cardi B, and Anna Wintour at Paris Haute Couture week 2023

Beyond publicized stops at fashion shows, her entire stay in the City of Light has been filled with couture-level fashion. On July 4, she headed out to do some light shopping in a head-to-toe Valentino catsuit and XL cape, as one does. Clearly, this is a woman who doesn’t bother conforming to trends. Minimalism is in, you say? She’ll take all the pattern-mixing, colour-blocking and exaggerated proportions she can get.

Case in point: The following day, Cardi B pulled up to the Balenciaga show in a frothy white feathered overcoat. The billowing garment was a statement in and of itself, but she later took it off to reveal the real star of the outfit: a sequin-covered bodysuit that extended into high-heeled boots (that’s right, they were on and the same). While posing with her partner Offset, her bow-shaped bag — which presumably served no real purpose, storage-wise — trailed down the Parisian sidewalk.

Photography by Getty Images

Shortly after this, she emerged in a patterned catsuit for the Jean Paul Gaultier show, complete with tattoo-like prints of suns, hands and chains. To complement the surrealist one-piece, she wore silver bangles, chunky chokers and industrial hoop earrings. As she emerged from her hotel to a crowd of photographers, Cardi B strutted slowly and twirled dramatically. From her blown-out hair to her symmetrically slit eyebrows, the look — and subsequent posing — encapsulated Cardi B’s commitment to crafting a memorable sartorial moment.

Photography by Getty Images

At this point, the artist is no stranger to going all out for the sake of fashion. Never forget the time she showed up to the 2021 AMAs in an avant-garde — if not kinda freaky — gold-plated Schiaparelli mask. At the 2023 Grammys, she offered a surrealist take on the hooded dress trend in a sculptural Gaurav Gupta Couture gown. Most recently, at this year’s star-studded Met Gala, she was arguably the best dressed after stepping out in not one or two, but four completely different outfits that all met the Karl Lagerfeld-themed dress code. Cardi B will go to great lengths for a style moment. And the Paris couture Fall 2023 shows are the greatest indication yet.

The best part? She dresses like nobody’s watching. She’s not trying to hit the most serious pose for every angle. She’s relishing in the fun of fashion while taking risks that feel true to her personality. To borrow her wording, she’s never regular, degular or schmegular. Cardi B is a fashion girl through and through.

I’m a simple gal. When I see new photos of pregnant Rihanna, I stop what I’m doing and pay my respects. Currently expecting her second child, the singer and beauty mogul is certainly not new to pushing the boundaries of maternity dressing. But this time around, her outfit recipes overwhelmingly have one common secret ingredient: the teeny tiny top.

At the Louis Vuitton Menswear Spring 2024 show on June 20, she pulled up in an elaborate denim bra-and-pant ensemble emblazoned with pixelated camouflage. Donning ’90s makeup, layered necklaces and her baby bump on full display, the now-viral look epitomizes expectant Rihanna’s style prowess. Then on June 26, the luxury brand released its campaign for the Louis Vuitton Menswear Spring 2024 collection which featured RiRi in another cropped matching ensemble. ICYMI: During her first pregnancy in 2022, she made headlines for pushing the boundaries of maternity acceptability with mini dresses, slinky separates and sheer chemises. A year and one baby later, Rihanna’s current style is still about challenging conventions of pregnancy dressing. And nowhere is this more evident than through her newfound unofficial uniform, in which fun-size tops reign supreme.

It all started with her second pregnancy announcement. When performing at the 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show, Rihanna used her costume to strategically share the news that baby number two was on the way. Sporting a blood-red breastplate by Loewe, the armour-like garment functioned as a strapless bra. Layered atop a bright skintight catsuit that accentuated her bump, the sculptural brassiere unsurprisingly sent the internet ablaze. By strategically revealing and concealing her belly, this non-verbal pregnancy declaration foreshadowed that Rihanna’s style in the coming nine months would be, once again, something to watch.

Indeed, RiRi’s second pregnancy style has been a parade of crop tops, bralettes and belly-baring baby tees. Whether she’s running errands with partner A$AP Rocky or making fashionably late entrances to high-brow industry events, she stays pretty faithful to her go-to formula. And each time, it blends seamlessly into her environment. On a dinner date in Paris back in April, she paired a humongous hooded patchwork coat and baggy cargo pants with a grey cut-off tank. A month earlier, during an even more casual outing, she fashioned her own crop top by under-tucking a preppy polo and pairing it with relaxed low-slung jeans.

This is also a technique that can be easily dressed up. During an evening out in New York City in May, Rihanna put a playful spin on the skin-baring style with a fuzzy halter and wrap skirt. That same week, she donned a leather trench done up only at the top to reveal a black bralette and micro-mini skirt, for a decidedly sexier vibe.

Photography by Getty Images

This is not to say the tiny top is all Rihanna wears. Her excessively embellished gown at the 2023 Met Gala was a riff on the traditional bridal silhouette, and April street style pictures showed her with a lengthy tube top. But it’s worth applauding the genius that lies in her oft-employed outfit recipe, ready to be reused at any time. It lets the baby bump breathe. It makes for an easier shopping experience. It allows for ample belly accessorizing. There’s an undeniable power in having a tried-and-true outfit formula, whether you’re pregnant or not. And if RiRi has shown us anything, it’s that sticking in the realm of certain sartorial parameters creates opportunities for outside-the-box experimentation.

Case in point: At the 2023 Oscars, she wore three looks that each gave a variation on her crop-top sensibilities. On the red carpet, her outfit comprised an Alaïa bra layered atop a sheer bodysuit. To perform, she donned a mesh babydoll lingerie dress with a bedazzled bra peeking through. Backstage, she was pictured in a mint green Bottega Veneta sash-like belly shirt. All styles were completely different from one another while emphasizing her maternal body in similar ways. Therein lies the beauty of opting for a non-traditional shirt.

Photography by Getty Images

With each red carpet, billboard shrine and street-style outing, Rihanna’s crop top-heavy ensembles always show her belly, while pushing back on the idea that such styles only belong on flat stomachs. Steve Jobs had his turtle necks. Karl Lagerfeld had his white ponytail and exaggerated collar. Pregnant Rihanna has her crop tops. Once again, I’m taking notes.

In a rare deviation from her and her sister’s usual black, monochromatic ensembles, Mary-Kate Olsen was spotted wearing a bright red coat in New York recently. And that’s not all — the fashion designer doubled down on her surprisingly colourful outfit, sporting a bold pair of metallic, gold loafers. Baggy, ripped jeans completed the look, nary a stitch of signature black or grey in sight.

RELATED: Our Favourite Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Fashion Moments

Some social media users immediately noticed this out-of-character style choice and took to Twitter to shared the colourful look.

“Mary-Kate Olsen wearing color, it’s time for summer!!!” shared Twitter user @MIUCClAMUSE. Others were more taken aback by the designer’s surprising outfit choice. “Seeing an Olsen twin wearing colour feels like spotting a shooting star,” wrote @kirkpate on Twitter.

So why is it so shocking to see an Olsen twin wearing anything other than neutrals?

Over the past 15 years, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who are co-founders of the quiet luxury fashion brand The Row, have become notorious for their timeless, sophisticated-yet-effortless uniform (and matching serious facial expressions). But their style hasn’t always followed their now-typical monochrome palette.

To fully understand the Olsens’ style evolution, you have to travel back in time to their Full House days in the late ’80s and early ’90s. During this period, the two young actresses took turns playing the youngest Tanner sibling, Michelle, and if their off-screen outfits weren’t identical, they were at least complementary. In stereotypical early ’90s style, the emerging fashion trailblazers would also frequently wear trends of the era, such as floral dresses, wire-framed sunglasses, and overalls.

Photography by Getty Images

In their post-Full House era, Mary-Kate and Ashley took on a series of now-iconic television and movie roles. As they hit the red carpets in the late 90s and early 2000s for films such as It Takes Two, Passport to Paris, Holiday in the Sun and their final movie together, New York Minute, their style was slightly more mature as it evolved to match their more grown-up tween and teenage selves.

While the fraternal twins would often continue to match, the end of their joint film career also saw their style and beauty choices start to diverge. By 2004, Mary-Kate had decided to ditch her iconic blonde hair for an auburn-brunette shade while Ashley went for a dramatic blonde fringe. Other differences became increasingly evident as each of the girls’ individual sense of style developed.

Photography by Getty Images

During the last few years of their acting careers, and especially immediately following their retirement, the twins were coming into their own as style icons and became synonymous with the “boho-chic” trend. The bohemian look quickly became the pair’s signature style as they experimented with lots of layering and accessories or would opt for loose-fitting pieces made of flowy fabrics that opposed other Y2K trends of the time.

By the time the Olsen twins launched The Row in 2006, their style had evolved beyond their boho-chic era into a more casual-yet-sophisticated way of dressing that often consisted of oversized pantsuits, minimal accessories and, of course, the all-black ensembles that they’re known for today.

Since the late 2010s, the Olsens have retreated further out of the Hollywood spotlight with each passing year as they quietly work on their label. And, whenever they’d be spotted in their luxurious off-duty looks, the enduring allure around the two sisters would only grow as their matching monochrome outfits had an undeniable air of mystery to them.

For their few public appearances in recent years, the twins have consistently opted for head-to-toe black. One of their most recent and notable monochromatic matching moments occurred when the sisters wore black vintage leather Chanel to the 2019 Met Gala, which directly opposed many of the bright, colourful, high-camp looks that other attendees wore to “Notes on Camp”-themed event.

The twins’ allegiance to dressing in mostly black, especially when they were once known to follow other trends, is a big reason why Mary-Kate’s recent bright-red coat and gold loafer outfit was so shocking.

Nevertheless, whether the twins were leading the boho-chic pack back in the mid-2000s, showcasing their luxurious, minimalistic The Row designs in head-to-toe black, or throwing us colourful sartorial curveballs, it’s clear that the Olsen twins are some of the most intriguing (and mysterious) style icons we’ve ever seen.

At the 2013 Oscars, pop culture hit peak Jennifer Lawrence. After her name was read from the ballot, the 22-year-old actor rushed to the stage to accept her Acadamy Award for Best Actress — only to trip and fall on her way up. Wearing a billowing tiered Dior gown, dripping in diamonds and sporting her hair in a classic Hollywood updo, she was the image of a scrappy ingenue. After laying on the steps embarrassed for a moment, she stood up and went on to charm the world with a self-deprecating speech and interviews peppered with pithy remarks. This now-infamous tumble encapsulated what everyone loved about her: She was unpolished, funny, relatable, and kind of all over the place (in a good way). Today, Jennifer Lawrence looks a lot different.

RELATED: The Real Reason Jennifer Lawrence Wore Flip-Flops at Cannes

Since embarking on the press tour for her upcoming film No Hard Feelings, Lawrence is yet again making waves on social media. But this time, it’s not for her clumsy antics — it’s all about her mature, sophisticated style. To attend the film’s U.K. premiere on June 12, the 32-year-old wore a black Dior dress (ironically) from the label’s Fall 2023 collection with monochrome embellishments, subtle sheer detailing and opera gloves.

Earlier that day, she was spotted in London wearing a clean-cut grey asymmetrical ensemble by The Row. This minimalist aesthetic continued on June 13, when wore a Maison Alaïa white button-up dress cinched at the waist with a black belt in Madrid, Spain. Working with stylist Jamie Mizrahi, Jennifer Lawrence’s current press circuit looks are a complete 180 from her 2010s style. And that’s surely intentional.

Ten years ago, Jennifer Lawrence had zero filter, and people loved it. The Hunger Games star would photobomb on red carpets, curse in interviews and openly drink a lot at high-brow events. At the time, her red carpet looks reflected her uncontrollable rise to superstardom. She experimented with sexy sheer styles, frothy princess silhouettes and dresses with bedazzled embellishments. Though her street style was pared down and casual, there was no defined sense of where Jennifer Lawrence’s image ended and where the real her began. Her persona became a meme; she was heralded as the ultimate “cool girl” and everyone’s favourite celeb — until she wasn’t.

Photography by Getty Images

Just like Anne Hathaway before her, Jennifer Lawrence fell victim to the fickle attitudes surrounding women in the public eye. In the mid-2010s, public opinions reversed, and she was shunned for the very reasons she had been propped up. Her once-beloved quirkiness was deemed a disingenuous act. Her red carpet spontaneity was written off as annoying. Even her notorious Oscars fall was accused of being a calculated PR stunt. Lawrence’s alluring chillness was, all of a sudden, not so chill. And she could sense it. “I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me. It had just gotten to a point where I couldn’t do anything right,” she later told Vanity Fair, reflecting on the state of her image in 2018. So, Lawrence took a break from the spotlight. She stepped back from acting. She stopped giving interviews. She was overwhelmingly absent from public events.

During this hiatus, she emerged as a silent street style icon. The chatty, eager-to-share Jennifer Lawrence was gone, and a new image was introduced through effortlessly put-together ensembles on the sidewalks of New York City. Now a new (and understandably private) mom, Lawrence’s public “appearances” have become mostly paparazzi photos of her looking low-key, casual and relaxed. She wears slouchy layers, comfortable footwear, and practical bags. She shops The Row for staples like long skirts or dresses, oversized sweaters and breezy cut-off pants. Her rotation of accessories like sunglasses and bucket hats add to her nonchalance. After a phase in her life where she felt like she was “people-pleasing” at all times, Lawrence looks refreshed and confident. And now, this ethos extends to her red-carpet return.

As she picks back up in her career, Jennifer Lawrence seems happily reserved. In May, the star made headlines at Cannes 2023 for prioritizing comfortable shoes. During press events for No Hard Feelings, she’s worn loose-fitting button-ups, preppy accessories, and oversized co-ord sets — not unlike her easy-going street style. While still glamorous, her streamlined red carpet looks feel decidedly no frills. Through it all, there’s a sense that she’s returning to the spotlight on her own terms, with firm boundaries in place.

There’s never-ending pressure put on women to reinvent themselves in order to win back public approval. But with her renaissance, Jennifer Lawrence doesn’t seem to be pandering to anyone at all. As she re-enters the zeitgeist, her outfits are the sartorial equivalent of holding your cards close to your chest while staying true to you. In some ways, it’s the antithesis of the fateful Oscars outfit from a decade ago — and in some ways, it’s not that much different at all. Regardless, she’s dressing for herself. And in any style reinvention, that’s the most important thing.

To simply call Violet Chachki the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race season seven is a severe understatement. Yes, it may be where she got her start back in 2015, but since then, she has outgrown the franchise (sorry, Ru!) and found fame on a global scale. The glamazon is part model, part performer, part artist, part muse and 100 per cent herself at all times, as I discovered when we chatted on the phone. She is not afraid to call it as she sees it, hence her Queen B reputation. But in our conversation, I see the true Violet doesn’t take herself too seriously.

Because of her busy schedule, we weren’t able to Zoom, but if we had, I imagine I would’ve been treated to an outfit of epic proportions. Her combination of old Hollywood glamour and femme fatal fetishism has earned her a spot amongst the fashion glitterati. Besides being a front-row fixture at fashion week, Chachki was the first ever drag queen to front a lingerie campaign in 2017. She gave Marilyn Monroe a run for her money in Prada’s Fall 2018 film. She’s walked countless runways, including Moschino’s and Richard Quinn’s. And she’s one of the select few who have descended the Met Gala steps in full drag. Not only that but she’s also dipped her toe into the beauty, fragrance and music worlds and recently collaborated with Canada’s own Allie-X on a single.

In honour of her “A Lot More Me” tour coming to Canada (tickets for which are now on sale), starting in Montreal on July 22, FASHION chatted with Violet Chachki about her upcoming performances, the newest season of Drag Race, and owning who she really is.

I would be remiss if I first didn’t ask you about RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 7, the franchise’s latest season where previous show winners come back to compete for the ultimate crown. As the winner of season seven, did you ever get the call, and did you want to get the call?

For a minute, I wanted to get the call, but my opinion on whether I would actually go back on the show changes weekly. Sometimes I think, “Oh, it’d be so fun,” and other times I’m like, “That gives me so much anxiety and absolutely not” [laughs]. So my thoughts on being in an all-winners season constantly change.

In the online series Fashion Photo RuView, you and Gottmik critique the runway looks from the latest season of Drag Race. Recently, Raja’s (the season three winner and renowned “fashion queen”) fans have come after you for your negative reviews of some of her outfits. What is your take on the situation?

I love Raja! She’s definitely an icon but [this whole situation] is just so funny. I think fans singled her out because she was the one that started the show Fashion Photo RuView in 2014, and then [I came on] critiquing her, but that’s the whole point of the series! Many fans are pretty young and just really attached to these queens. So when someone comes in and critiques them, even if it is their job, people can get upset about it. I mean, I tried to be fair with all of my criticism, and it’d be boring [if I said] everyone was great or bad the whole time. All the queens have their moments, and at the end of the day, it’s just one opinion, and it’s just clothes. Don’t get me wrong, I love fashion and drag, but let’s be real here: we’re just playing dress-up. There are so many more important things going on right now.

So what are you looking for when you toot or boot an outfit?

There’s just so much drag now that it’s become saturated, so it’s getting harder and harder every year [to stand out]. There’s a lot of mediocre and copycat drag out there. So for me, I’m looking for something I haven’t seen before. I want to see who pushes the art form in a new direction.

You had such an impact on the fashion in Drag Race. How do you think drag fashion has changed over the years?

Violet Chachki yellow jacket

I think many different people have helped shift what drag fashion is and what it could be. Sharon Needles [the winner of season four] really shook up what it could be. And then Raja took the show in a fashion direction, and yeah, I think I helped shift it as well. In those early seasons, everyone was so different, unique and specific to where they came from in the country. But now it feels like all the queens [on the newer seasons] are blending into one another. Everything is so self-referential and has become almost like a parody of itself.

Drag queens have been taking the fashion industry by storm. What do you think has spurred this takeover? Because it feels like they have become fashion’s new muses.

I think drag and fashion have always influenced each other. Fashion is about confidence and creation, and that’s what drag is about too. But I don’t know if I’d call it a takeover. There are designers like Richard Quinn and Jean-Paul Gaultier who have always represented the community, and there are others who never have and never will.

You once told Vogue that you’ve always thought of fashion as a language. Can you expand on that and how it applies to your style?

I think of fashion like armour. I love using clothes to say something without speaking, and I think it’s true that a picture is worth a thousand words. You can use clothing to take up space, get attention and even hide. A good example is after I won Drag Race, I was getting so much criticism for things that I’m not: “she’s not an actor,” “she’s not a comedian,” “she’s not as talented as so-and-so.” So when I came back [for the season eight finale] to pass the crown down, I wanted to make a statement saying a big f*ck you to everybody who was so critical of me. I wanted it to be almost scary how regal and royal I looked. I had a prosthetic crown growing out of my head, and I think it worked really well. It was just such a powerful message without saying anything.

You’re pretty famous for your corsets, and now the rest of the world has caught up. What do you think is the eternal appeal of the corset, and what’s the craziest one you’ve ever worn?

Some people think corsets are just about being skinny, but that’s not what draws me to them. I love the extreme silhouette they create, the artistry of how they’re made and all the time that goes into making one. The smallest corset I’ve ever worn was probably the 18- or 19-inch corset I wore on the show. It was for the “Death Becomes Her” runway challenge, so I was really going for it. We had to walk the runway twice, so I went around once and then I had to take a break because it was honestly a health concern.

And on Instagram, you’ve teased a lot of costumes with corsets for your “Violet Chachki Presents A Lot More Me” tour. What can fans expect from the show?

Well, the show quite literally means me taking control over my career. I’ve wanted to do a show like this for so long, and I named it “A Lot More Me” because, after years of being wrapped up in Drag Race and touring with other people, I finally get to do my solo show and do something that is totally me, my vision and my style of drag. And I think people can expect truly the most produced solo touring drag show that’s ever happened. I mean, so much production goes into this show, from the costumes to the music to visuals to the aerial performances. It’s a drag, vaudeville, circus and fashion show all in one. It’s a complete labour of love, and it’s just about me coming into my own, owning my star power and showcasing the kind of drag I love.

UPDATE: In an interview with Entertainment Tonight that was published on June 8, 2023, Jennifer Lawrence revealed the actual reason she wore flip-flops to the 2023 Cannes Film Festival red carpet.

Despite speculation that she wore the shoes in protest of Canne’s alleged “no flat shoes” policy, it turns out that the A-lister’s footwear choice was purely for comfort and safety. In the interview, Lawrence explained that the heels she was originally wearing were a size too big. When it came time for her to descend the infamous Cannes red carpet steps, she thought that she’d fall if she wore heels. So, she made the wise decision to change into a sensible pair of flip-flops.

“I was not making a political statement,” said Lawrence. “Not that I wouldn’t — I had no idea that there was a whole controversy with people wearing flats or walking down the red carpet barefoot… I’m all for making a statement, I would just want it to be on purpose.”

Although it turns out there wasn’t a deeper meaning behind Lawrence’s Cannes footwear choice after all, there are many other celebs who have seemed to take a stand against the supposed no flat shoes “rule” at Cannes.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival is well underway and the star-studded event has already gifted us with countless glamorous, high-fashion celebrity looks. Jennifer Lawrence certainly lived up to that standard with her vibrant Dior gown worn on the red carpet on May 20 — but it was the flip-flops she paired with the look that really captured audiences’ attention.

RELATED: The Best Looks From the 2023 Cannes Film Festival (So Far)

At first glance, one may think that the unique footwear choice is a nod to Lawrence’s “relatable” celebrity persona and a desire to prioritize comfort over style. But, there actually may be a deeper meaning behind the star’s decision to swap out her crimson high heels for the black flip-flops that she wore to walk down the carpet’s famous steps.

It’s widely known that the dress code for Cannes red carpets is formal, black tie attire, but there appears to be an unwritten rule that women are expected to follow to attend the festivities: they must wear high heels.

While the origin of this unofficial guideline is oft-debated, there’s no doubt that high heels have long been regarded as a staple of femininity and attractiveness for women. A 2022 study found that women in high heels were regarded as being more sexually attractive and of a higher social status than women who were wearing flats. And yet, while sky-high stilettos may complement an outfit, sometimes a chic, comfortable pair of flats is the more responsible call if you don’t want to be in pain all night.

No one knows this better than the A-listers who often have to attend hours-long events in constricting clothing and uncomfortable footwear. As such, there are several other famous female celebrities who have challenged this sexist “rule” on past Cannes carpets — and some have been more direct with their statements than others.

Isabelle Huppert and Cate Blanchett in 2023

Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t the only star to seemingly stand up against the rule at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. French movie star Isabelle Huppert gave a subtle nod to the absurdity of the guideline by wearing nude Anatomic heels by Balenciaga at the premiere of Killers of the Flower Moon. This wasn’t just any old pump though, the design and colour of the heel were made to mimic a bare human foot, which totally made it look like Huppert was defying the “only high heels” rule on the carpet.

Cate Blanchett took one of the most direct stances of all when she presented the Breakthrough Artist Award to Iranian-French star Zahra Amir Ebrahimi at this year’s festival. Before introducing Ebrhaimi on stage, Blanchett made note of the sexist “ban” as she said, “I am going to take my heels off, in honour of the women of Iran. This is to stab all the people that stand in the way of women’s rights.” Ebrahimi had to flee Iran when she was in her twenties after an intimate video of her and her boyfriend was leaked and a criminal case was made against her for having pre-marital sex. As the two artists shared a hug onstage, it became abundantly clear that Blanchett speaking out against the festival’s “no flat shoes” ban was actually a much larger political statement on the need to speak out on gender inequalities for all.

Kristen Stewart in 2018

Kristen Stewart also made a statement against gender inequality in the fashion world on the red carpet for Blackkklansman at the 71st annual Cannes Film Festival in 2018. Similarly to Roberts, Stewart ditched her Louboutin stilettos midway through her appearance and walked the rest of the carpet barefoot — and the star was much more outspoken about the alleged high heel rule. “I feel like you can’t ask people that any more. If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you cannot ask me either,” she told reporters. “I get the black-tie thing but you should be able to do either version — flats or heels.”

Photography by Getty Images

Julia Roberts in 2016

As she walked the red carpet for the premiere of Money Monster back in 2016, Julia Roberts infamously kicked off her heels midway through the event and concluded her appearance barefoot. When asked about her decision to ditch the shoes, Roberts said, “A lot was happening from my ankles up. Let’s not forget all that. A lot of time and effort went into ankles up.” Whether this act of rebellion was a direct response to the “no flat shoes” rule at Cannes, its timing certainly makes it seem like it was a statement. In 2015, just one year before Roberts walked the carpet barefoot, a group of women were allegedly not allowed into a screening of a film at Cannes because they were wearing flat shoes.

Queen Bey returned to the stage for her first solo tour in almost seven years on May 10 as she kicked off her international Renaissance Tour in Stockholm, Sweden — and the pop star did not come to play with her Beyoncé Renaissance tour looks.

RELATED: Beyoncé Said Quit Your 9-5

The “Break My Soul” singer opened her almost three-hour-long show by performing classic tunes such as “Dangerously in Love” and “1+1” in a custom Alexander McQueen crystal-embroidered bodysuit with matching ankle boots (below). The outfit was a classic Beyoncé look as it highlighted the star’s silhouette with its exaggerated shoulder pads and extra detailing around her hips.

Beyoncé and her dancers then slipped into custom Courrèges to perform “I’m That Girl,” “Alien Superstar” and other hits from her latest album, Renaissance. For this look, Bey sported a silver bodysuit that featured a circular cutout reminiscent of a magic mirror in the middle of her torso. Her dancers also wore matching silver two-piece sets that channelled the futuristic, nightlife vibe of this portion of the show.

Next up was a brightly-coloured and holographic mini dress by David Koma that captured the cool ’70s-disco energy of the night. Bey even came on stage in this ’fit wearing matching sunglasses and a complementary jacket to perform the club hit “Cuff It” and later took the accessories off to belt out songs like “Energy” and “Break My Soul.” Italian jewellery brand Almarow also created a custom pair of earrings named “Renaissance Superstar Earrings” to complete this powerful look.

As the superstar sang through her show’s 36-song setlist, another costume highlight included a custom pearl-adorned Balmain corset, which she paired with a matching hat, sunglasses and thigh-high black latex boots. Beyoncé also stunned in a bejewelled and (literally) figure-hugging custom Loewe bodysuit by Jonathan Anderson (below) that was inspired by a dress from the brand’s Fall 2022 ready-to-wear collection. She paired it with elegant black opera gloves, complete with press-on nails, that perfectly matched the outfit’s eye-catching design.

The looks kept getting better as the show went on, but perhaps one of the most exciting moments of the night happened when Beyoncé walked out in a white gown that, with the help of two robot arms and a UV light, soon transformed into a colourful-triangle-patterned dress that left the audience in a daze.

And of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention how Queen Bey wore a literal bee costume, which was custom-made by Mugler and inspired by a look from the designer’s Spring 1997 haute couture collection, aptly named Les Insectes, to perform “America Has a Problem.”

To wrap up the night, Beyoncé flew above the stage on a sparkling, silver horse — reminiscent of the one on her Renaissance album cover — in a matching custom Coperni look designed by Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant. As she said her final goodbyes to the crowd after the hours-long show, her metallic bodysuit and ankle boots shimmered as her cape gleamed in the bright arena lights.

Since debuting her first set of looks, Queen Bey has already updated her tour wardrobe with a handful of jaw-dropping new costumes. And as her worldwide tour continues, stay tuned as we share a city-by-city round-up of Queen Bey’s costumes.

Sutherland, England

The global sensation showcased a fresh outfit when she opened her concert in Sutherland, England on May 23 in a glamorous custom sky-blue Brandon Blackwood dress. The elegant high-slit gown was paired with matching pale blue heels, opera gloves and a sparkling necklace and earring set.

Paris, France

Bey also debuted a new opening outfit when she hit the stage on May 26 in France, as she (literally) sparkled in a silver gown that was decked out in sequins.

London, England

The singer continued to raise the bar with her new costumes during her five-show run at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from May 29 to June 4.

For the first show on May 29, Beyoncé hit the stage in an electric blue custom mesh gown by Roksanda that completely covered her body and was fitted with a long train.

What really stole the show in London, though, was a bespoke Off-White bodysuit that took over 50 hours to make. The red look, which included several elements of Off-White’s Fall 2023 collection, including 40,000 red crystals, was complimented by Beyoncé’s dancers’ matching red ensembles — and, of course, her daughter Blue Ivy’s costume as she joined her mother on stage.

As she began her second night in London, the singer stepped out in a sparkly, deep-red Alexander McQueen dress that glistened on stage. The dress, which was inspired by McQueen’s fall 2023 ready-to-wear collection, featured a plunging sweetheart neckline and reams of draped fabric, and was accessorized with matching opera gloves and metallic thigh-high boots.

For her third London show on June 1, Bey wore a custom Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood black latex corset dress with unique structured spiral sleeves.

Then, for the opening look at her final show in London, she wore a custom form-fitting Robert Wun gown that featured a plunging v-neckline, dramatic shoulder ruffles and an asymmetrical cascading train.

When she came back on stage to perform “America Has A Problem” during her last London concert, the superstar stepped out in a bespoke Mary Katrantzou mini dress with a fun twist. The look, which featured black and gold detailing and a surrealist hourglass figure, was coined the “perfume bottle dress” as its silhouette, and matching headpiece, mimics the appearance of a classic fragrance bottle. Staying true to her “Queen Bee” identity, Beyoncé also paired the look with a pair of antenna-esque sunglasses.

Barcelona, Spain

Beyoncé debuted two new custom looks while performing her almost three-hour set in Spain on June 8. First up was a disco-inspired Stella McCartney dress and leggings set that featured ethically-sourced materials and thousands of hand-placed, lead-free crystals. On her Instagram, McCartney shared photos of the singer wearing her design with the caption, “So proud to see @Beyonce in custom, conscious Stella crystals… Reflecting the silver touches, power and glamour of her iconic tour.”

The second new look was a custom red, black and silver leather Intarsia catsuit by Fendi. The costume, which drew inspiration from illustrations by Antonio Lopez in Fendi’s Spring 2022 collection, was paired with matching thigh-high boots, silver opera gloves, cat-eye sunglasses, a red wide-brimmed hat and an upcycled fur Intarsia cape.

Marseille, France

As she took the stage in Marseille, Beyoncé once again surprised her audience with two new costumes. The first was a custom Alberta Ferretti leotard featuring a miniskirt and asymmetrical train. Like so many of her other Renaissance tour looks so far, Bey accessorized with matching over-the-knee boots and opera gloves.

The second costume she premiered in Marseille was a custom Jacquemus look reminiscent of a disco ball. The mini-dress was fitted with small, silver reflective panels and paired with (what else?) thigh-high boots and opera gloves, of course.

Beyoncé is set to hit the stage at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto this July and, with over 50 more shows to go on her Renaissance tour, fans are buzzing about what surprise costume changes are up her sleeve. We can’t wait to see what Queen Bey has in store.

The hold that Kylie Jenner had on teenage girls in 2016 truly cannot be understated. Sporting a stack of Cartier bracelets (at approx $7,000 a pop!), a rotating roster of neon wigs, and an impressive collection of colourful body-con dresses, Jenner was an early social media It girl. If she wasn’t posting to Instagram, she was documenting her makeup on Snapchat or sharing snippets of her life via Vine (RIP) — and on each platform, millions gathered to watch. All this elusive coolness was bottled up into her novel Kylie Lip Kits, which came in distinctly of-their-time packaging, adorned by plumped lips dripping with a matte makeup substance. It was a special time in pop culture, and for many a high schooler, Jenner — nay, King Kylie — reigned supreme.

RELATED: Fashion Is Going Through a Minimalist Vibe Shift

But in 2023, things look different. Matte finishes have been traded in for glazed donut glossiness. Bright logomania has taken a back seat to quiet luxury and minimalism. And the Kardashians aren’t exactly the undisputed trendsetters they once were. Enter: a Kylie Jenner fashion rebrand.

Lately, the 25-year-old has been going through something of an image change — and the internet has noticed. On a recent trip to Paris, Jenner leaned into a black-and-white colour palette, clean lines and minimalist accessorizing. From a Bottega Veneta halter dress with pointed Lanvin pumps to a Maximilian Davis skirt suit with Chanel sling-backs, her monochrome wardrobe had surprisingly old-school silhouettes and uncharacteristically conservative tailoring. It’s a complete 180 from her 2016 style. And it’s not the only vibe shift to recently come from Jenner.

Another piece of this puzzle is her widely speculated relationship with Timothée Chalamet. It’s a pairing that seemed unlikely to some, but the evidence increasingly points to it being legit. Case in point: On June 1, paparazzi pictures — albeit of “bigfoot sighting quality” — show Chalamet and Jenner together at a barbecue (?). Because everything the Kardashian-Jenners do is shrouded in PR speculation, some view this unforeseen coupling as part of a larger intentional image refresh. And if that’s the case, it’s a trick that Jenner is especially well-versed in. She kind of needs to be.

Since Keeping Up With The Kardashians premiered in 2007 (when Jenner was just nine years old), the youngest sister’s every style era has been publicized. In 2012, she walked Sherri Hill’s tween runway in voluminous tutus and platform pumps (below). The following year, she switched gears with a California flower girl aesthetic for a collaboration with Pacsun.

Photography by Getty Images

But the advent of King Kylie — and her established individuality — can be traced back to 2014. Her lips mysteriously got plumper. She started wearing dark makeup. She embraced edgier aesthetics, with an affinity for skulls, chokers and defiant blue hair.

Photography by Getty Images

By 2015, Jenner had owned up to lip filler and launched her makeup empire, now Kylie Cosmetics. Her influence during this time period can be summed up by the highly regrettable “Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge,” which found young girls attempting to DYI the look of inflated lips. Importantly, the adoration over Jenner’s injections stood in contrast to women of colour, who have long been discriminated against for having naturally fuller lips. Still sporting futuristic bodysuits, skin-baring separates and bright hairstyles, Jenner’s pop culture prominence was arguably at an all-time high in the mid-2010s. To paraphrase Mean Girls, everyone just knew stuff about her: she really loved pomegranate seeds; she drove a matte black Range Rover; Terror Jr’s song “3 Strikes” was her unofficial anthem.

After going through a private period with the birth of her daughter Stormi in 2018, the access that defined King Kylie was gone. But over the past few years, she’s subtly surfaced a new mature taste for suited sets and minimalism. And now, along with an even more obvious style switch-up, aspects reminiscent of King Kylie are coming back too, via cheeky OOTDs and casual dancing-in-the-car videos.

After all, nothing indicates reinvention quite like a wardrobe overhaul. Anne Hathaway’s refreshed outfit formula quickly cemented her as a fashion icon. Zendaya’s transformation after partnering with Law Roach made her a defining red-carpet star. And of course, Sofia Richie Grainge is now firmly in the zeitgeist thanks to her unmistakably “old money” style.

Jenner, it seems, gets this. She has always been good at switching things up, and she’s at it yet again. We may never relive the quintessential cool factor that made 2016 so magical. But her wholehearted embrace of a new era feels very King Kylie indeed.

It’s that time of year again when movie and fashion lovers can come together to take in all the excitement of one of the season’s most glamorous, star-studded events — the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

RELATED: Is Elle Fanning the Queen of the Cannes Film Festival?

If you recall last year’s festivities, it was one for the books. Anne Hathaway stunned audiences by wearing five gorgeous looks throughout the week, which ranged from an all-white custom Armani Privé column skirt and crop top combo to a hot pink Valentino gown. Bella Hadid‘s vintage, old-Hollywood ensembles were a social media sensation. And Adriana Lima beautifully showing off her baby bump? Iconic!

This year, the festival runs from May 16 to May 27, and the stars have (so far) walked the 2023 Cannes carpet in bold colours and extravagant gowns. Think lots of sparkles, full skirts and even a cape or two. They also love their matching accessories — check out Helen Mirren’s blue hair and Naomi Campbell’s sunglasses, for starters.

Chanel may not produce menswear, but at the recent Chanel Cruise 2023/2024 show in Los Angeles, there were men in Chanel roaming everywhere around the roller rink “runway” set up on a Paramount Studios lot. There was Snoop Dogg with a scarf tied babushka-style over his braids, Lil Nas X with a tangle of pearls and chains around his neck, G-Dragon in a black jacket embroidered with white camellias, Nile Rogers in a CC logo jacket and jeans, Anderson Paak in a pink chain motif cardigan and many, many dudes — some famous, some not — carrying quilted bags.

Some of the gents sporting Chanel that night are “friends of the house” including the National Ballet of Canada’s Siphe November. The stylish principal dancer began his relationship with the brand about two years ago, a perk that has allowed him access to an array of Chanel that he mixes with his wardrobe of cool independent designers and high street labels. Even better, November is a perfect sample size in Chanel clothes and shoes.

In L.A., he threw an oversized jacket thrifted at Value Village over a Chanel T-shirt to check out the new Rodeo Drive flagship. He lunched at Matsuhisa in a Chanel bomber jacket and black leather pants from Gap. And he attended the show in a tweed jacket with satin collar and cuffs over Ms. Min trousers. I sat down with November to chat about how he wears Chanel and how growing up in a small town in South Africa has given him a unique perspective on the storied brand.

How did you choose your look for the Cruise show?

There’s always one piece, whether it’s a pant or a hat, that’s the thing that allows me to step into my vibe for that day or event. For the show, it was that jacket. The whole look was inspired by Versailles and old drawings of the Sun King, Louis XIV. And the fluffy socks helped create a ballet feel without it being literal. It’s still me but it’s the Chanel version of me.

And there was a Michael Jackson influence with the sunnies. Especially with the loafers and the socks. He was also inspired by the courts of France. And he was the King of Pop. But I didn’t anticipate the way that jacket would shine in the lights which made it so much more spectacular. It sparkled so beautifully. It was a real moment and I felt like a star. I wanted to feel like the Sun King and I did.

Chanel does not make menswear, so you are a guy wearing women’s clothes.

And I love that. One of my biggest fashion idols is Pharrell (Williams). I remember I saw him once when he came to Toronto. It was, like, 2014 and it was at the height of when he had that Vivienne Westwood hat that everyone had an opinion about it. And I remember watching him through that whole time and he just kept wearing it. And then seeing him wear Chanel and rocking it and looking so fire made me want to wear it too. Chanel sunglasses are the only sunglasses I wear because of him.

A lot of guys would not wear pearls. Do you associate pearls with femininity?

No, I don’t. A pearl necklace on a man’s bare chest looks good to me. Jewellery is an accessory. It has no gender. If you look at different cultures around the world, historically they approach jewellery as a form of self expression and status. I see pearls as an accessory for self expression as opposed to an identity.

That must partly come from growing up where you did. I imagine you didn’t have any specific references for pearl necklaces.

No, I had none of that. In my culture, men and women wear beads as part of their traditional wear. I didn’t grow up with pearls tied to an image and then in my teens I saw artists breaking those boundaries — like Pharrell wearing pearls and mixing it with high jewellery and rappers breaking those codes. There’s a rebellious nature to men wearing pearls, which I like for sure.

Chanel cap and leather jacket. The string bracelet was purchased from a street stall in Windsor, ON and November treated himself to the Cartier Santos when he was promoted to principal dancer. “This is my reminder of everything I’ve accomplished so far.” (Photography by Maya Fuhr)

Do you have a favourite Chanel element?

One of the first shows I saw was dedicated to the camellia and to me, it doesn’t get any better than that. It’s so part of the identity of the house to me, even more than the two C’s. There’s something so rich about it. There’s so many ways you can play with it. I have a white camellia pin that I love to pop onto different outfits. It makes me feel Chanel without being too Chanel-ified.

Again, not to harp on the gender thing, but a flower is so conventionally identified with women.

To me it’s not associated with anything but care and sensitivity and beauty. So if it makes me look better, I’ll put it on.

Chanel necklaces worn with a KOTN tank and a mohair sweater that November purchased from a friend. (Photography by Maya Fuhr)

Do you think of Chanel as something precious that you only wear on certain occasions? Or do you look at it the same way you look at a cotton T-shirt?

Sometimes I approach it as “this works well with what I want to wear” or sometimes I make it the main event and the Chanel piece is the star. I look at clothes in general as kind of an everyday conversation. I don’t take very good care of my clothes, if I’m being honest. Because I think they’re supposed to be worn.

You’ve visited 19M, Chanel’s new Paris headquarters for 600 artisans including embroiderers, feather workers and goldsmiths. What was that like?

It was crazy. Seeing all the creativity that goes into developing new styles — as an artist that’s something I really connected with. As someone who puts a lot of hours into perfecting my work and understanding that whether my leg is two degrees higher or lower evokes a whole different emotion in the person experiencing it, seeing that attention to every little detail changed everything for me. It added a different layer of appreciation for the garments and what the brand represents.

Three minutes into my interview with Pom Klementieff, I’m apologizing — but not for myself. “On behalf of Canada, I am so sorry,” I say, unsure about how to respond to her tale of rejection. The Guardians of the Galaxy star laughs, clearly not harbouring any grudges.

Klementieff was born in Quebec City under a diplomatic passport. “And I lived there for about a year because my dad was a French diplomat,” she explains. She moved around a lot as a kid, spending her childhood between here, Japan and the Ivory Coast before her French-Russian father and Korean mother settled in France. As a teen, Klementieff thought “it would be cool” to have a Canadian passport. However, she was denied one due to her father’s diplomatic status at the time of her birth. To make matters worse, years later, while on a press tour for one of her many Marvel movies, she wasn’t allowed into Toronto because of visa issues. Again I apologize, and again she laughs. “I love Canada, but you’ve told me ‘no’ a lot,” she says. “I’m kinda traumatized.” [Laughs] Not that I could tell.

Klementieff asks if she can turn her camera off during our video chat. “I don’t want to see my face — it annoys me,” she laughs. I get only a brief glimpse of the actor in her New York City home in a casual cotton striped tee with her blond hair messily pulled back. And while it would be easy to call her out on the irony of her statement — she’s starring in two of summer’s biggest blockbusters: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, out now, and Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, premiering in July — coming from Klementieff, who is so sincere and full of sunshine, it doesn’t seem right.

In case you’re a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) amateur, Guardians of the Galaxy has been a phenomenon since 2014. Compared to its comic-book counterparts, it’s an eccentric and eclectic breath of fresh air with a killer soundtrack and comedy chops rivalling any Will Ferrell production. Of course, it has all the normal drippings of an MCU movie (big cast, bigger explosions and even bigger muscles), but the franchise, now in its third and rumoured to be final installment, has an even bigger heart — and Klementieff is at the centre of it. Her character, Mantis, introduced in 2017’s sequel, is a big-eyed antennaed Celestial empath who can control people’s emotions. “She’s kinda like the glue that keeps the Guardians together, especially in volume three,” says Klementieff, who also loves that she gets to be the comic relief — a role not usually given to women. “It gives me a lot of freedom to just be weird,” she says, which is something I can tell she delights in. Klementieff is quick to laugh and even quicker to laugh at herself. She is unusually unguarded and readily shares her stream of consciousness, whether she is receiving a package (as she did in the middle of our call) or contemplating why she can’t do a cartwheel (“I never know if my legs are straight!”).

Pom Klementieff

The only topic she seems reluctant to discuss is her family. Klementieff suffered a series of devastating close personal losses, starting with the death of her father when she was still very young. In desperate need of some escapism, she immersed herself in movies. “As a child, I had a little dream in my head to become an actor, but I never saw anyone who looked like me onscreen so I didn’t think it would be possible,” she shares. Though she thrived in theatre classes from a young age, Klementieff went to law school to appease her family. She dropped out soon after, realizing that life was too short to not do something you love. “I never wanted an office job,” she admits. “I aspired for adventure and something outside the norm.” More specifically, Klementieff wanted to kick some ass.

Listing Kill Bill and Park Chan-wook’s The Vengeance Trilogy as significant influences in her life, Klementieff was inspired by the image of a “strong, unapologetic and crazy fighter female character.” She took up boxing and (later) martial arts, and as luck would have it, her first major role was playing a villainous bodyguard in Spike Lee’s 2013 adaptation of Chan-wook’s Oldboy. “Training is always hard, but that’s the beauty of it,” says Klementieff. “It puts you in action mode instead of being passive and sad — it just makes you happier.”

And, boy, does it make Klementieff happy. I can barely finish my question before she launches into her detailed fight history, animatedly describing how eager she was to show off her skills in Guardians. “When I got the audition, I was so excited that I sent training videos to the producers at Marvel,” she shares. “And then I found out that my character didn’t really fight, and I was like, ‘What the hell, guys!’” After years of pushing, Klementieff finally got physical in 2022’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and in Vol. 3.

However, nothing hits quite like a Tom Cruise movie, as the actor is famous for his practical approach to filmmaking and death-defying stunts. Klementieff started training for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One in 2019 and hasn’t had a break since. She tells me she was just in the Arctic two weeks earlier, fighting off frostbite while filming the sequel. And before that, she was celebrating her 100th skydive. “It’s always a little bit scary, but there’s the excitement of the unknown,” she muses. “It’s like dancing in the sky — poetic and very addictive.”

Klementieff’s thrill-seeking tendencies also apply to the red carpet. “I love taking fashion risks and thinking outside the box,” she shares, describing how she tries to find a balance between having fun and “not being the centre of attention.” To achieve this, she has dedicated folders of inspirational images saved on Instagram that consist primarily of travel, tattoos and motorcycles. Given her tough-girl aesthetic, this is hardly surprising. She’s been known to rock a chunky choker, bold shoulder and structured suit to a premiere, but her style took a definite step up after she became one of the faces of Alexander McQueen. While Klementieff currently stars in the British brand’s Spring 2023 campaign — alongside former FASHION cover star Sadie Sink — she tells me that the leather two-piece she wore to the 2022 Cannes Film Festival might be one of her all-time favourites. “The noise those boots made was crazy — I sounded like a f*cking cowboy,” she laughs. “But I loved not wearing a gown and being a little rebel.”

With two blockbusters in play, I doubt Klementieff will be “little” for much longer. She’s a sweet soul wrapped in a tough moto package who can’t cartwheel but can certainly skydive. For now, she has full days and then a month-long Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 press circuit ahead of her, which quite honestly sounds exhausting. But at least she’ll get the opportunity to travel. “In some ways, being in one place for too long gives me anxiety,” she reveals, referring to both her past and her present. “I live in a suitcase, so home is where the people I love are. And I have so many friends in so many different places that it feels like my heart is torn between cities.” Maybe this time she’ll even make it to Canada.

How does one describe the perfect wine and cheese pairing? The subtle coolness of intentionally mismatched socks? The right sunglasses that pull an entire outfit together? That’s how I feel about Anne Hathaway and Zendaya.

RELATED: Is Anyone Thriving More Than Anne Hathaway Right Now?

On May 16, the two actors attended a Bulgari event in Venice, Italy alongside fellow brand ambassadors Priyanka Chopra and Blackpink’s Lisa. Celebrating the luxury label’s new Mediterranea High Jewelry collection, the four women (unsurprisingly) stunned in luxe accessories and designer gowns. But something about Zendaya and Hathaway, specifically, felt like sartorial serendipity.

Hathaway wore a Versace chainmail gold-to-silver ombré dress with a removable hood, platform heels (because of course), and a necklace with statement pink gemstones. Zendaya emerged in a custom black Richard Quinn mermaid gown, featuring off-the-shoulder draping and accessorized with a diamond snake Bulgari choker. Both dramatic in completely different ways, the pair were a picture of visual harmony. Hathaway’s ornate, sultry vibe complemented Zendaya’s regal, elegant aesthetic. Seated next to each other, they nearly broke the internet. And it’s not hard to see why.

If you were to tell me three years ago that Anne Hathaway and Zendaya would become a coveted pop culture pairing, my movie-and-TV-obsessed mind would protest. Mary Jane Watson and Andy Sachs? Rue Bennett and Mia Thermopolis?! Historically speaking, the two haven’t exactly existed in the same cinematic universe. And yet, every now and again stars align (literally) to produce an unforeseen source of dual celebrity fashion inspiration. With their unique style statuses firmly on the rise, it’s suddenly clear that no two A-listers are currently more in sync.

Think about it: Both Hathaway and Zendaya have undergone major transformations into bona fide It Girls. Going from Disney darling to fashion front row, Zendaya has established a reputation for reinvention. With the help of image architect Law Roach, she coordinates with co-stars, tailors outfits to match movie themes, and always gives the world something new to talk about. Similarly, since 2021, Hathaway has transcended her scrutinized publicly-imposed “good girl” archetype to an image of individuality and risk-taking, thanks to her stylist Erin Walsh. In May 2022, she solidified her title as a new red carpet icon, with FASHION‘s Fashion News Director Annika Lautens noting that “she (finally) isn’t afraid to take risks.” Hence the hooded chainmail dress.

But at the May 16 Bulgari event, the duo’s satisfyingly contrasting outfits weren’t the only standout aspects of their appearances. It’s their respective sparks of self-assurance that offered the ultimate coordination. Just look at the videos of Zendaya and Hathaway giving the exact same energy while posing alone at different times. Individually? Masters of confidence and personal style. Together? A joint slay.

This is not the first occasion Zendaya and Anne (…Annedaya?) have shared undeniable chemistry. Around this time last year, the starlets stunned in a promotional short film for Bulgari. In the two-and-a-half-minute clip, they can be seen walking succinctly side-by-side, dancing freely in slow motion, and leaning into one another to gaze upon the Italian scenery. As a viewing experience, it is cinematic joy. And now, it’s clear it was but a teaser for the fashion feast to come.

Of course, Zendaya and Anne Hathaway aren’t the first unexpected friendship to serve collaborative style prowess. There was an array of looks from Tilda Swinton and Timothée Chalamet at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. The world saw Shania Twain and Harry Styles wear matching sequins at 2022’s Coachella. More recently, we’ve been blessed with red-carpet coordination from The Last of Us co-stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. Time and time again, these special duos complement one another while staying true to themselves.

What’s next for Hathaway and Zendaya, you ask? We can only hope for a full-length feature film in the future. (I mean, can you imagine the method dressing?) Regardless of what they get up to together, with their signature confidence, they’ll always be well suited.

On May 11, the Canadian Film Centre (CFC) celebrated its 35th anniversary with its first in-person event in three years: The CFC Gala: Take 35, a gathering of Canadian talent at Toronto’s Rebel nightclub, presented by Netflix. Celebrating 35 years of Canada’s entertainment industry and its storytellers, the festivities rocked an ’80s theme—honouring the decade the CFC was ‘born’—from its fashion, its décor and its music.

The fundraising gala raised more than $600,000 towards full entrance scholarships for incoming residents to the CFC and towards its suite of programs across film, TV, acting, music and digital/immersive media.

Attendees enjoyed a variety of activities throughout the evening, starting with a cocktail reception hosted by Shaftesbury and AMC, which led into a surprise dance performance by Mayhem’s Finest before guests sat down for dinner. Later, they were treated to incredible performances from The Collective featuring Cleopatra Williams, Slaight Music artist Theo Tams, Juno-nominated roots contemporary artist Shakura S’Aida, and Gordon Deppe and Sandy Horne of iconic Canadian new-wave band Spoons. Plus, there was a number of onsite activities and a digital auction filled with exciting packages and experiences, like a private villa in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, weekend getaways at exclusive resorts across Ontario, shopping sprees, spa treatments, unique cultural experiences and more.

Check out the top looks of the night on the red carpet—and on the dance floor—in the gallery below.

Is Halle Bailey the real-life Ariel? Lately, it feels entirely possible. In light of Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, starring Bailey as the underwater princess, the singer’s outfits have exclusively channelled oceanic imagery, siren aesthetics, and underwater dreaminess. Through this fashion worldbuilding, she has blurred the lines between reality and mythology — even kicking off mermaidcore, the micro trend of the summer. And it’s all because of one masterful styling trick: method dressing.

When we hear a celeb is going “method,” we can have an unsavoury impression of what that means. The controversial technique is known for seeing an actor throw themselves fully into a role, on and off camera. Think Jared Leto reportedly sending his castmates unwelcome gifts in the name of playing the Joker, or Lady Gaga adopting an Italian accent and living in character for 18 months while filming House of Gucci. Method dressing, on the other hand, is innocuous (and impressive), because it involves submerging oneself into a role using only clothes and accessories. At its core, method dressing is when actors take aspects of a film — like the plot, the scenery, and the characters — and apply them to their red-carpet or street-style ensembles. Simply put, it’s sartorial storytelling at its finest.

Case in point: Ahead of The Little Mermaid‘s premiere on May 26, Bailey has stuck to an array of Ariel-approved ensembles. When performing on American Idol, she donned a custom Michael Fausto mermaid silhouette, inspired by the Disney princess herself. At the UK premiere, her Miss Sohee look had a subtle tail shape and an ornate beaded headpiece. A week earlier, she went viral in a metallic number from Valdrin Sahiti, featuring a shell-like bra and corseted bodice resembling splashing water. When attending the premiere in Mexico City, she emerged in a Georges Chakvra pearl-embellished dress, her billowing skirt made with netted detailing.

This under-the-sea oeuvre is nothing if not intentional. It’s a narrative that Bailey’s stylist, Nicky Good, has been crafting for months. At the Oscars, Bailey sported a gauzy blue Dolce & Gabbana princess ballgown before slipping into a sculptural Maison Yeya after-party dress reminiscent of flowing water. At the Met Gala, her white Gucci cape garnered comparisons to sea foam, coral, and jellyfish tendrils. Of course, with each new look, hype for the film has only grown. Herein lies the tried-and-true power of method dressing.

Zendaya and image architect Law Roach have long been masters of this pr strategy. Over the years, Roach has weaved references into Zendaya’s red-carpet looks when promoting a new project. Take Spider-Man: No Way Home. To the premiere in 2021, Zendaya wore a custom Valentino gown with spider web embroidery and a superhero eye mask. At another screening, she sported an Alexander McQueen suit jacket dripping with crystal web detailing and statement spider-web earrings.

In advance of 2017’s The Greatest Showman, Zendaya wore exuberant colour blocking that referenced the circus setting, while her suited ensembles channelled a ringmaster. For 2021’s Dune, each of her showstopping get-ups paid homage to the sci-fi universe, from her character’s uniform to the desert of the fictional planet Arrakis.

The beauty of this technique? It allows the actor to establish a defining career era in line with each respective project. Exhibit A: Jenna Ortega has been faithful to goth aesthetics since starring in Netflix’s Wednesday, making her basically synonymous with the character. Then there’s Zoë Kravitz, who reliably stunned in sleek leather trenches as well as bat and cat motifs to mark her role as the elusive Catwoman in 2022’s The Batman.

Unlike method acting — which can cause stars to get stuck in the fictional mind of the person they’re playing — method dressing flourishes on the premise of reinvention. When promoting 2015’s Cinderella, Lily James embraced a princess-style alter ego with voluminous ballgowns and glass slippers. Cut to 2022: She had a decidedly sexier look to promote her role as Pamela Anderson in Pam & Tommy, even cosplaying the ’90s icon in a Baywatch swimsuit-inspired dress.

But perhaps some of the best method dressing of all time took place surrounding the Maleficent series. Starring Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora and Angelina Jolie as the titular witch, the leading duo consistently mirrored their starkly contrasting aesthetics. At the 2019 premiere, Fanning wore a Gucci fairytale-like design emblazoned with droplets of blood — a reference to the tale of Sleeping Beauty pricking her finger. The same night, Jolie opted for a severe Versace gown with a scorpion brooch, evoking unmistakable sorceress imagery. In dressing as polar opposites, they brought the film to life.

Ultimately, method dressing sees stars skillfully play up their roles without assuming the entire personality of the character, making it all the more interesting. As for whether Halle Bailey really is an undercover mermaid? It’s still up for debate. She certainly looks the part, though. And that’s the whole point.

It’s hard to be a celebrity in a relationship, I assume. Your dating timeline is basically public knowledge. Slightly humiliating monikers like “Bennifer” and “Tay-Squared” are unavoidable. And your street style as a couple is treated as a marker of your compatibility. But Hailey and Justin Bieber — in all their mismatched glory — don’t seem phased by this.

RELATED: Is Hailey Bieber 2023’s Audrey Hepburn?

The famous couple, who tied the knot in 2018, are frequently photographed out and about looking like they’re going to different parties. Hailey leans form-fitting and polished, while Justin is reliably dressed down and baggy. It’s almost as if they purposely skew as far as they can from one another when getting dressed. And you know what? It works.

Case in point: The pair is currently in New York City, and their sartorial contradictions are on full display. On a May 10 dinner date, Hailey went full Matrix fashion in a leather maxi and bralette with pointed heels. Justin, on the other hand, wore a white tank, low-slung jeans and worker boots. This seems not like a simple vibe difference, but a deeper commitment to being so visually contrary that the untrained eye would think, “Hm, I wonder why these two strangers are holding hands.”

Said dress code conundrum was the case yet again on a date night in April. Hailey’s ensemble? Pointed-toe heels, chic sheer tights and a halter LBD. Justin’s? Sweatshirt, baseball cap, and slides, if we’re being generous (but slippers if we’re being serious).

It was the same deal a few months back, at the grand opening of OBB Studios in Los Angeles. Mrs. Bieber was decked out in Schiaparelli couture with gold accessories, while her husband was in paint-stained jeans, a Drew House sweater and a pink beanie.

At this point, this sort of outright outfitting confusion is part of the couple’s style DNA. Historians will tell you that back in 2021, on a much-publicized outing in Paris, Hailey Bieber dazzled in a pink Miu Miu cocktail dress while Justin donned a slouchy red hoodie. Moral of the story? They almost never look in sync, and maybe that’s the point.

The garments worn by Hollywood couples tend to be taken as symbols of synchronicty. Tom Holland has a “Z” emblazoned on certain pairs of pants, which fans speculate is an understated ode to Zendaya. More alarmingly, Machine Gun Kelly accessorized with a vial of Megan Fox’s blood around his neck during their courtship. But Hailey and Justin Bieber take a decidedly different approach: dedicated inconsistency. Olivia Broussard (@olivialayne6) recently went viral on TikTok pointing out this phenomenon. “Is one of them overdressed or is the other one underdressed?” Broussard mused, flashing a series of photos of the duo on screen. “I cannot tell by looking at these outfits.”

There are, as with everything in life, exceptions to this pattern. Sometimes, the Biebers will appear delightfully harmonious. Take their recent outing in L.A., where they both sported baggy jeans, a staple of low-effort, versatile dressing. Hailey completed her look with kitten heels and a crop top, while Justin went for a hoodie and sneakers. Here, despite their differences, the pair were decidedly in equilibrium. But this is not usually the case.

More often than not, Hailey is dressed to the nines while Justin looks unbothered and relaxed. She’ll wear a luxe Saint Laurent fur coat, and he’ll be in bug-eye sunnies and patterns layered with reckless abandon. For them, that’s normal. And sure, it’s a little jarring. She’s giving high-fashion, he’s giving Adam Sandler with a jar of pickles. But perhaps their drastically different dressing methods signal two partners that are secure in their relationship. They’re wearing what they want, and not judging one another for it.

Photography by Getty Images

What’s the purpose of painstakingly coordinating with your significant other, anyhow? To present an image of unity to the world? To convince onlookers that you’re on the same page? The Biebers, and all their incongruous outfits, take this notion and flip it on its head. What’s next for these two and their contrasting street styles? I’m not sure. But in all likelihood, nothing will make sense. And I’ll love it.

The Deeper Meaning Behind Kate and Charlotte’s Matching Headpieces https://fashionmagazine.com/style/celebrity-style/kate-and-charlotte-coronation-headpieces/ Tue, 09 May 2023 21:18:24 +0000 https://fashionmagazine.com/?p=469966 Catherine, the Princess of Wales, and her eight-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, stunned viewers on May 6 as they arrived at King Charles III’s Coronation wearing matching floral-inspired crystal headpieces. Catherine, the Princess of Wales, and her eight-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, stunned viewers on May 6 as they arrived at King Charles III’s Coronation wearing matching floral-inspired crystal headpieces.

Many royal watchers speculated as to whether Kate Middleton would wear a traditional tiara to the special occasion, as is customary for regal events such as last weekend’s, and if she would borrow one of her predecessor’s precious pieces of headwear for the day.

Instead, the royal mother-daughter duo opted to don the less traditional flower-and leaf-adorned headpieces that were designed by Jess Collett and Alexander McQueen specifically for the coronation.

And the intricately embellished crystal headbands have a deeper significance that goes far beyond them just being stunning statement pieces.

In accordance with King Charles III’s love for nature and the environment, the floral-designed headpieces are said to represent the newly-crowned monarch’s commitment to combatting the dangers of climate change. There’s even been much speculation about how the King will tackle this issue, with ABC News predicting that he will be known as Britain’s first “climate king.”

Designer Jess Collett confirmed the headpiece’s nod to King Charles in an Instagram post where she stated how she has a special personal connection to the monarch’s charity, The Prince’s Trust.

“It was 25 years ago that I secured my first loan from the @princestrust to start Jess Collett Milliner,” the designer shared on Coronation Day. “Thank you King Charles and @princestrust for your support ……….still going strong today and loving my trade.”

Further speculation around the silver bullion-fashioned regal headband has pointed to the design being a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II. During her coronation in 1953, Queen Elizabeth’s six maids, who followed and helped her into Westminster Abbey, wore visually-similar silver headpieces to those that the two princesses wore this past weekend.

Whether this design choice was a purposeful nod to the late Queen, Kate did honour the monarch through another piece of jewellery she wore at the King Charles III’s Coronation as well.

In addition to the sparkling headpiece, the Princess donned the George VI Festoon Necklace. This sacred three-strand chain, which was commissioned by King George VI in 1950 for his daughter, who was known only as Princess Elizabeth at the time, was one of the Queen’s favourite jewels and she often wore the piece on special occasions. Kate also wore Princess Diana’s diamond and pearl earrings in memory of her late mother-in-law.

Kate is no stranger to royal dressing and understands the sartorial significance that comes with every piece of clothing and jewellery she wears. Tying in years of tradition while incorporating King Charles’s modern environmental values into the design is yet another example of the the Princess of Wales’s commitment to honouring the Royal Family and serving the monarchy, one that been under intense scrutiny in recent years.

Anyone who’s been to a Harry Styles concert in the past two years, or has seen how his thousands of fans like to dress up for his shows, knows one thing to be true — Harries (the fandom name for Styles’ enthusiasts) have created a distinct concert-going uniform that consists of everything from brightly-coloured fringe jackets to platform boots, cowboy hats and, of course, feather boas.

RELATED: What To Wear To a Harry Styles Concert

In a new music video for Styles’s latest single, “Satellite,” the British pop star paid tribute to his fans’ unique fashion sense in a memorable way.

The video begins with a Mars rover-like robot named Stomper roaming the backstage halls at one of the 15 sold-out Love on Tourshows that Styles played at the Forum in Los Angeles in January of this year.

Stomper soon travels out to the arena floor but before that, the robot stops in front of a TV to listen to a documentary about the Mars Curiosity rover. At this point, Successionfans will recognize a familiar voice as Logan Roy himself (Brian Cox) narrates a short voiceover.

After the brief Succession cameo, Stomper ventures out to the floor of the venue as the night’s concert comes to an end. The small-but-mighty robot then finds itself navigating around hundreds of concert-goers who, as one can tell from their brightly-coloured boots and ’70s-inspired bell bottoms, are unmistakable Harries.

Real-life Harries immediately noticed how the singer included these details about themselves and their outfits in the video — and quickly took to social media to share their thoughts.

There’s been speculation on social media if Styles used real footage of actual concert-goers in the video alongside the clips of actors decked out in Love on Tour wear. The general consensus seems to be that a mix of actor and actual fan footage was used, especially as fans now recount seeing the little robot roaming ominously among feather boa remnants and allegedly recording footage after some of the shows.

Many elements of the Styles fandom’s eccentric concert outfits can be attributed directly to Styles’s own past looks. For instance, the feather boa is not only a popular accessory among his concert-goers, the singer also donned one himself during his 2021 Grammys appearance. Other standout style signatures of the British singer that are often replicated by fans include sequins, leather pants and leotards.

However, Harries don’t solely wear outfits that replicate Styles’s own looks. Instead, a culture centred around a shared respect, kindness and inclusivity has been fostered among fans and the colourful outfits they usually don to Styles’s shows represent just that — the ability to freely and openly express who they are.

Styles himself has made headlines for how his fashion sense has not only evolved throughout his career but how it sometimes challenges conventional norms. And, after appearing on the cover of Vogue’s December 2020 issue in a dress, Styles began to hear more questions regarding his gender identity, and even faced backlash for the look

Despite the constant questioning, the star has continuously refused to label himself in terms of sexuality and gender identity. He was quoted in the June 2022 issue of Better Homes & Gardens, saying, “The whole point of where we should be heading, which is toward accepting everybody and being more open, is that it doesn’t matter, and it’s about not having to label everything, not having to clarify what boxes you’re checking.”

Styles’s willingness to be playful with his fashion sense has been fun for fans to watch as well. On his latest tour, Styles’s wardrobe has ranged widely from night to night — and fans quickly came to look forward to seeing what he’d wear at their show. A pattern also quickly emerged during some Love on Tour shows as the singer’s stylist, Harris Lambert, would sometimes post a photo of Styles’s outfit for the night on Twitter, often crediting Gucci (Styles is an ambassador for the luxury label) with creating the look.

Love on Tour is set to wrap up this July in Italy after over 160 shows — and hundreds of thousands of unforgettable outfits from Styles and his Harries alike.

We found out today as King Charles III was officially sworn in as monarch of the British Commonwealth following his mother Queen Elizabeth’s death in 2022 after more than 70 years on the throne.

It was a typically rainy and dreary U.K. day as international politicians, members of the Royal Family, and select celebrities filed into the Westminster Abbey for the coronation. But the gloomy weather didn’t stop many guests from wearing cheerful colours and striking chapeaux. Take the ever-stylish Queen Letizia of Spain who wore a bubblegum peplum skirt suit with killer matching heels and a hat covered in pink netting.

Also in pink were Sophie Trudeau, who wore a rose satin skirt with matching sheer-sleeved top, textured clutch and (what else?) a hat perched atop her head, and Katy Perry, who wore a retro pastel pink suit with opera gloves and an out of this world fascinator.

There was much pomp and circumstance around the event, as is to be expected at such a rare occasion in history, despite the fact that King Charles III’s Coronation was at times plagued by rumours of musical guests turning down offers to perform and, of course, speculation over the attendance of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Ultimately, the former was in attendance while the latter chose to remain in California.

Kate Middleton looked the part of the Princess of Wales in a regal velvet cloak atop bespoke Alexander McQueen and diamond headband, with Princess Charlotte by her side in a matching, albeit more age-appropriate, version of the sparkly headpiece.

Here, we round up the most eye-catching coronation outfits from King Charles III’s big day, from punchy colourful dresses and traditional regalia to gravity-defying fascinators.

When we talk about fashion in the Royal Family, we tend to focus on Princess Diana, the Duchess of Sussex, the Princess of Wales, and Queen Elizabeth II. But there’s one unsung hero of this famous sartorial lineup. Ahead of the Coronation of King Charles III on May 6, we must discuss the style legacy of Princess Anne.

RELATED: Kate Middleton’s Decade of Style and the Soft Power in Her Fashion Choices

Who is Princess Anne, you say? We don’t fault you for asking. Daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and sister to King Charles, she is known as the hardest-working, often overshadowed royal. Seventy-two years old with no retirement plans in sight, Princess Anne reportedly worked 214 engagements last year, compared to King Charles’s 181. Over the decades, she has witnessed the evolving monarchy first-hand with a famously tough sensibility (she once faced off an armed would-be kidnapper), a reserved demeanour (shocking, right?) and a signature dry sense of humour. Oh, and she loves horses. All of this can be mirrored in her no-nonsense, ever-put-together style. And this week, in a rare CBC interview, Princess Anne hinted at her winning approach to getting dressed: She’d prefer simply not to think about it.

King Charles’s coronation is a once-a-generation event shrouded in sartorial anticipation. But Princess Anne’s outfit choice — her military uniform — couldn’t be more self-explanatory. The Royal revealed to CBC that she’ll be reprising the ceremonial role of Gold-Stick-in-Waiting at the historic event, adding that such a position solves her “dress problem,” as she’ll be donning traditional regalia. “This is so on-brand,” writes Tamara Abraham in The Telegraph. “It’s not like the Princess Royal to make a fuss about her wardrobe — it’s a problem to be fixed, rather than a creative opportunity.”

As her appearance indicates, Princess Anne seems always focused on the task at hand. Look no further than her stacked resumé. At 39, she was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. She was the first British Royal to compete in the Olympics, having ridden in the three-day equestrian at the 1976 Montreal Games. With the reputation of being somewhat of a rebel, she forewent royal titles for her children, Zara and Peter, in an effort to give them a more normal upbringing.

Similarly, at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth, Princess Anne made history when she accompanied the coffin alongside only men, dressed in a military uniform and pink lipstick. With this tribute, she reportedly became the first royal woman to walk in such a procession. All of this to say: Anne is sort of a fashion icon hiding in plain sight.

As a reliable worker in the Royal Family, Princess Anne often sidesteps salacious headlines. With a practical, utilitarian, and sometimes sporty style, she’s perhaps the greatest personification of the rumoured royal “never explain, never complain” mantra. But that’s not to say what she wears is boring. In fact, it’s pretty daring.

Travelling sans stylist on royal tours, Princess Anne is not known for following trends or overhauling her wardrobe each season. She has established a reputation for re-wearing outfits, often changing accessories or styling the same look slightly differently decades later. She stays true to her tomboyish tendencies, which have not always been applauded. In 1973, when Princess Anne famously wore a linen pantsuit to go to the theatre — paired with blue eyeshadow, we might add — it was reportedly seen as controversial for a woman in the Royal Family.

Even still, a frequent inspiration in Princess Anne’s wardrobe is her equestrian career, donning traditional, timeless, and impeccably tailored suiting. She’s also a fan of bright colour blocking and playful patterns — think: pink houndstooth, vibrant polka dots, exaggerated florals and geometric shapes. She has a penchant for statement details like oversized collars, fanciful ruffles and extravagant headpieces. Switching between androgynous utilitarianism and refined glamour, Princess Anne’s under-the-radar dressing legacy is the epitome of personal style.

Vogue notes that her outfits reflect her position as one of the family’s most “progressive thinkers,” having put her own spin on the era-defining fashion of the ’60s and ’70s. Whether she’s dressed up or pared down, her style remains direct, unwavering and entirely certain of itself. This is an invaluable skill to have in the Royal Family.

Below, we’ve rounded up some of the best looks from Princess Anne over the years.

We are gathered here today to mourn. No, there hasn’t been a death. But fashion has suffered a great loss: all the stars absent from the 2023 Met Gala.

In all its prestigious glory, the annual fundraising ball has a unique ability to cram together as many gussied-up famous people as possible. As it always does, this year’s affair delivered on a lot: endless bridal fashion; many a pregnancy reveal; and a record-breaking number of catsuits. So, it is with much chagrin (and some nosiness) that we must turn our attention to all the celebrities who shockingly weren’t there.

ICYMI, the theme was dedicated to the late designer Karl Lagerfeld, whose artistic work over his decades-long career is the epitome of coveted vintage fashion. Because of this, the event was met with expectations for a sea of archival garments and iconic women who were once Lagerfeld’s muses. The former we got. The latter, we sadly did not.

While legends like Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell did attend, many of Lagerfeld’s longtime inspirations didn’t. Claudia Schiffer, the designer’s favourite model in the ’90s and a repeated Chanel bride, was rumoured to be attending but posted on May 1 that she had declined the invitation. Canadian supermodel Linda Evangelista is synonymous with some of Lagerfeld’s most recognizable Chanel designs. She was referenced by guests (including Lizzo), but never present herself. And one of Lagerfeld’s buzziest Gen Z muses, Lily-Rose Depp, who has donned his work several years running at the Met Gala and whose mother Vanessa Paradis was an O.G. Karl muse, was also conspicuously M.I.A. at Monday’s ball was. Unjust!

On May 1, as A-listers trickled onto the steps of the Met, non-attendees became a social media focus as well. A Photoshopped picture of Zendaya in Rita Ora’s dress made the rounds. An AI-generated image of Selena Gomez quickly went viral. An old paparazzi shot of Lady Gaga dressed as a Chanel bride was mislabelled as a sneak peek of the star en route that evening. (Cruel, all of it!) Throughout the night, trending tweets lamented the loss of Met Gala frequenters like Bella Hadid, Blake Lively, Billy Porter, and Katy Perry.

Some absences were more expected than others. Beyoncé hasn’t been to a Met Gala since 2016 — basically a lifetime ago. As a supporter of Lagerfeld, fans held out hope that 2023 would mark her great return, but to no avail. The same goes for Nicki Minaj, who has reliably repped Lagerfeld’s use of logomania at Fendi. Her presence last year established false hope for Monday’s event, where she was nowhere to be found.

Many of the missing stars are masters of a Met Gala theme. In 2019, Lady Gaga honoured camp with a 16-minute transformational entrance. That same night, Zendaya showed up as a real-life Disney princess, with Law Roach as her fairy godmother. Just last year, Blake Lively gave us gilded glamour by unwrapping her gown’s billowing skirt to reveal an entirely new one underneath. It’s hard not to think about the looks we missed out on account of these stars not being there. Not to be dramatic, but a fashion robbery is afoot!

In the world of Met Gala lore, there’s endless speculation surrounding exactly what it means when a celebrity doesn’t show up. This year, with the contentious legacy of Lagerfeld as context, some theorized that stars like Gomez and Lively opted out as a statement of solidarity for the communities the designer has offended. It’s a nice thought! But when you take into account that both of them have worked with him in the past, it doesn’t exactly hold up. The less glamorous, more believable possibility: scheduling conflicts. And as for why many of Karl’s most iconic muses, specifically, weren’t there? That remains a mystery.

One thing’s for sure, we’ll always have memories. See below for our favourite Met Gala looks by those who skipped this year.

“Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” might have been the official theme of the 2023 Met Gala, but it could have just as easily been “vintage couture.” Countless guests pulled from the fashion archives as they celebrated Lagerfeld’s legacy with their looks at the event on May 1, with several drawing inspiration from the late designer’s work at iconic fashion houses such as Chanel, Fendi and Chloé.

Some celebrities took the archival approach a step further and opted to wear designs that they had previously donned themselves.

Nicole Kidman honoured Lagerfeld by slipping into a Chanel haute couture gown that she originally wore for her classic Chanel No. 5 campaign back in 2004. In the commercial for the popular fragrance, Kidman played a celebrity who was struggling with her role in the public eye. The ad, which was directed by Baz Lurhmann, featured clips of her running through New York’s Times Square in the blush pink gown. Last night though, the silk tulle dress endured much less severe conditions as it gracefully draped down the legendary steps of The Met.

Lagerfeld’s longtime muse Gisele Bündchen also re-wore a past look as she walked the carpet in a Chanel Spring 2007 bridal gown complete with a grand feathered cape. Bündchen, who first wore the dress in a photoshoot for Harper’s Bazaar South Korea from the same year, was all smiles at her first post-divorce Met as she was clearly having fun posing in the angelic outfit.

Vanessa Kirby also sported an original Lagerfeld design on the first Monday in May, sparkling in the historic “shower dress” from Chloé’s Spring 1983 collection. The English actress said that wearing an original piece, which was previously being showcased at the North Carolina Museum of Art, “felt special” during a red carpet interview.

Naomi Campbell (another longstanding Lagerfeld muse) also wore a vintage Chanel confection, pulling from Chanel’s Spring 2010 haute couture collection. Dua Lipa, who was a co-chair of the event, wore vintage Chanel haute couture as well, showcasing a bridal gown from the Fall 1992 line that was famously worn by supermodel Claudia Schiffer.

There’s certainly a sustainable fashion element to stars re-wearing pieces that were already made prior to the 2023 Met Gala — and these gowns weren’t the only reference to sustainability on Monday. According to Vogue, an installation made of flowers and thousands of recycled water bottles was the main centrepiece of the event. The innovative decoration, developed by designer Tadao Ando, was reportedly a reference to how Lagerfeld always looked to the future, and the eco-friendly component of the design was also a nod to that forward-thinking ideation.

While they may not have re-worn exact gowns to the Met Gala on May 1, several other celebrities drew major inspiration from Lagerfeld’s vintage designs. Margot Robbie, for example, wore a stunningly similar remake of a Chanel black dress fitted with a transparent bodice that Cindy Crawford previously wore down the Spring 1993 runway 30 years ago.

K-pop star Jennie Kim also looked to vintage Chanel for her Met Gala look, sporting a recreation of a mini-dress from the house’s Fall 1990 ready-to-wear collection.

Ashley Graham, Penélope Cruz, Maude Apatow, Allison Williams and Lizzo also followed the trend and selected looks that were deeply inspired by Lagerfeld’s past creations.

Whether these stars wore the originals or near-identical replicas of previous designs, the willingness to recycle memorable looks points to another aspect of sustainability in fashion — the importance of not losing the significance of past artwork. Through the numerous nods to Lagerfeld’s classic creations last night, it’s clear that when it comes to high fashion, the late designer’s artistic legacy and dedication to his craft lives on.

When it was announced that Karl Lagerfeld was the theme of the 2023 Met Gala, there was some understandable backlash about the late designer’s complicated legacy. Industry voices (including FASHION) pointed to Lagerfeld’s track record of vocalizing misogynistic, discriminatory, and, perhaps most reliably, fatphobic views. This is why, as stars graced the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, May 1, it became positively poetic that many of the best-dressed guests were those with plus-size bodies.

Throughout his influential career, Karl Lagerfeld came to represent the gatekeeping nature of the fashion industry. At the helm of Chanel and Fendi, the creative director was quick to defend the pervasive practice of hiring only waif-like models. In 2009, he told the German magazine Focus that “no one wants to see curvy women,” among other offensive quotes documented over the years. His opinion was clear: thinness equates to beauty. And as a titan of his field, Lagerfeld’s blatant fatphobia reverberated in the fashion world.

But as attendees strolled up the carpeted steps in his honour at the 2023 Costume Institute ball, this problematic legacy was not brushed under the expensive cream-coloured rug. In fact, where many outfit tributes were concerned, it stood front and centre.

For starters, celebrities who don’t fit Lagerfeld’s norm for the “ideal” body type emerged as sartorial stars fearlessly taking up space. Actor Alex Newell’s black dress featured a sculptural heart-shaped silhouette and mesh cutouts at the ribs. A round chapeau towered over their head, so as to create a feathered halo effect. Model Precious Lee wore a curve-hugging Fendi black wrap and a bedazzled baguette bag — complete with a trailing hot pink train and voluminously teased hair.

Ashley Graham donned a Harris Reed corset gown with a plunging off-shoulder design, inflated hips, and a dramatic mermaid skirt. Though inspired by a couture gown from Chanel’s Fall 1987 show, the ensemble offers an undeniably dramatized interpretation. With Lagerfeld’s non-inclusive views as context, these statement-making looks held a deeper meaning about plus-size bodies, and how they exist in exclusionary spaces.

As fashion’s most prestigious fête, the Met has long been an emblem of high society; attendance guarded by an elusive worthiness. And when paying homage to Lagerfeld, instead of fading into the background, attendees above the sample size vivaciously stood out.

Perhaps most affecting were the cheeky riffs on quintessential Chanel imagery. Actor Harvey Guillén — who has spoken about the challenges of being Latino, queer, and plus-sized in Hollywood — leaned into femme visuals, donning a baby pink tweed suit and trailing train. Punctuated with strings of pearls and colossal rosettes, it was a reclamation of ’90s Chanel runways, which exclusively featured thin, mostly white models.

Lizzo, who typically serves up avant-garde moments on the red carpet, toned things down in a classic silhouette with a clear-cut message. Wearing a black gown adorned by a caged pearl top, her custom Chanel look emulated model Linda Evangelista on the Fall 1991 runway. Often viewed as the “ultimate Chanel girl,” Evangelista fit the rigid body mould perpetuated by Lagerfeld (and the fashion industry at large in that era). Conversely, Lizzo’s mere presence evoking coveted traditional Chanel is a rebellion in and of itself.

Throughout the evening, there was a throughline of thematic defiance against Lagerfeld’s views. For instance, the designer reportedly spoke out against same-sex couples adopting children. Along with body standard statements, there was a sense of lavish irreverence among some queer stars who walked the carpet. Lil Nas X shocked the world (as he does) in a full face of rhinestones and pearls while swapping clothes for bedazzled body paint. Janelle Monáe entered in a gargantuan Thom Browne hoop overcoat, only to reveal a black sparkly bikini underneath. A theme of all these risk-taking looks? Commanding a room while existing fully and unapologetically.

With thin appearance ideals continually dominating the cultural conversation, experimental body-inclusive fashion is as crucial as ever. Far too often, red carpets and runways see those above a size two in billowy caftans, conservative hemlines and unimaginative silhouettes. But at the 2023 Met Gala, the ensembles worn by larger bodies exuded joy, individuality and pure thoughtfulness.

The irony is obvious. As some have noted, Karl Lagerfeld probably would have hated to see plus-size celebs donning custom designer garb and attending fashion’s most esteemed event in his name. At the end of the day, that is precisely what makes this year’s Met Gala such a soaring success.

The 2023 Met Gala, which honoured the work and legacy of Karl Lagerfeld, presented a red carpet replete with vintage Chanel, wedding gowns (an homage to the late designer’s tradition of closing each Chanel couture show with an elaborate bridal look), tributes to Choupette, and design signatures like pearls, tweed and 3D flowers. Naturally, this made for quite a cohesive Met Gala red carpet where most attendees understood the assignment. Thankfully, the famous guests seemed to also take the *unofficial* Met Gala after-party assignment to heart, too, where the dress code was short, skin-baring, and extra sassy. EmRata taught us:
