Picture your face a few decades from now. Maybe you have crow’s feet and pronounced under-eye bags. Your hair might have gone grey. You likely have some dark spots and hyperpigmentation. We’re taught to be scared of that inevitable transformation. But what if we embraced it instead?

RELATED: Are Women Not Allowed to Age?

On TikTok, the “Aging” filter — which has over 10 billion views on the app — uses artificial intelligence to predict what you might look like in the future, showing users with sagged cheeks, thinned lips, fine lines and even yellowed teeth. And over the past week, the effect has become an agent of digital chaos.

At first, the filter set off something of a collective existential crisis. It has inspired panic-induced applications of sunscreen, intensified emphases on skincare regimens, and advice on procedures to “age as gracefully as possible.” It’s even prompted therapists to weigh in with advice on mitigating aging anxiety. This shock factor was most likely intended. Age-related filters reportedly do consistently well on TikTok, and it’s easy to see why.

@teawithmd

Breaking it all down! #aging is not bad OBVIOUSLY but taking steps to preserve your skin health is NECESSARY. Genes account for a lot too. #agingwell #agingup #aginggracefully #agingwell #agingskin #dermbypark

Earlier this year, the “Teenage Look” filter went viral on the app. Unlike “Aging,” the effect smooths fine lines, softens complexions and shows people a simulated version of their high school selves. But even that trend sparked similar dread, with users pointing out how the filter’s nostalgia made them more aware of their own mortality. Both filters — while seemingly opposites of one another — exemplify our fear-fuelled obsession with marking our age, whether we’re looking back or looking ahead. The impacts reach beyond the internet, as plastic surgeons have reported a rise in patients asking to look like filtered selfies.

No matter what artificially enhanced version of yourself is reflected back at you, TikTok filters are always a bit jarring. So when we engage with them, it’s usually helpful to remember that they’re not real. But the “Aging” filter — which has been dermatologist-approved for its accuracy — presents a new kind of challenge, because it’s not so far-fetched.

Unsurprisingly, the TikTok aging filter has exposed a horror-filled knee-jerk reaction, with users like Kylie Jenner expressing their distaste for a look at their face with considerably less collagen. (She later wrote “she’s cute” in the comments.)

At the same time, a sense of appreciation has emerged. Hailey Bieber and Mia Khalifa noted similarities to their grandmothers. A smiling Amy Poehler got in on the trend with the short but impactful caption reading, “May I be so lucky.” Users are lovingly remarking on how they look like the older women in their lives. There have been makeup tutorials with the filter on. Some have even positioned it as a version of themselves to aspire to, with one user writing, “I can’t wait to meet her.”

Over the past few days, my feed has shifted to people embracing their elderly digital selves. Peppered between posts of fashion micro-trends or videos about the Barbie press tour are visual odes to aging, with the buzzy filter as a prompt. In some ways, the very image of growing old has become its own kind of trend.

@yazzy_so_c00l

gotta remind myself that aging is a blessing… ima still be wearing that spf everyday tho #fyp #aging #agingfilter #gettingold #agingisaprivilege #lgbt #oldqueers #oldgays #agedfilter

♬ The Bug Collector – Haley Heynderickx

More and more, it seems we’re in a time of aging dichotomy, where growing older is embraced at a performative level, but not always a genuine one. Julia Fox can declare that “aging is fully in,” while Kim Kardashian unapologetically says she’d “eat poop” to look young. We praise Martha Stewart for her youthful glow in a swimsuit photoshoot while ridiculing Madonna for her obvious cosmetic procedures. Women over the age of 45 are being increasingly recognized in Hollywood, while the stars of And Just Like That… continue to face endless flack over their appearances.

In 2023, the discourse on anti-aging hasn’t disappeared; it’s just reinvented itself in sneakier ways. Take the idea of ageing gracefully. “What makes ‘aging gracefully’ a particularly nefarious euphemism for anti-aging is that it implies anti-aging should appear to be effortless,” argues beauty writer Jessica DeFino in her newsletter The Unpublishable. “‘Aging gracefully’ is not effortless, though — it demands an incredible amount of effort and then demands even more effort to disappear the evidence of said effort.” The mainstream idea is still that there’s a right way to age. But the virality of the Aging filter, with its emphasis on so-called imperfections, inadvertently challenges that.

If nothing else, it’s offering algorithmic visibility to growing older. (I, for one, have never seen so many celebrities age at once.) Ageist beauty standards are probably not going anywhere anytime soon. But maybe the TikTok aging filter, with its baked-in inevitably of how we’ll look years down the line, can be a start. And even if our acknowledgement of aging is happening through a filter, it feels pretty radical.

Through helpful hacks and clever tips, TikTok is endlessly inspiring us to use beauty products in unorthodox ways while educating us about how to do so in the process. Our latest fixation? Maximizing our self-tanner use with a couple of genius beauty hacks.

RELATED: The Best New Face Sunscreens To Add to Your Summer Skin Routine

We already love self-tanners for their bronzing capabilities, but we can get more use out of self-tanners than you might think. On TikTok, the #selftan hashtag has amassed more than one billion views across an infinite amount of videos — many of which include self-tanner tricks you didn’t even know you needed to try. From faking freckles to facial contouring, turns out self-tanners are indeed a multi-use product. Below, we unpack four self-tanner beauty tricks from TikTok and how to test drive them at home.

Chisel your cheeks

Who knew self-tanner could be a secret contour weapon? Content creators on TikTok are using this bronzing trick to sculpt cheekbones and achieve a natural-looking facial contour. To get the look, you’ll want to apply a pump of your self-tanner to a tanning mitt that’ll act as a makeup palette and allow you to have more control over how much product you use. Then, using a makeup sponge, begin applying self-tanner to your cheeks, forehead, nose, and jawline as you would typically apply your bronzer or contour products. “My best advice would be to blend it out as much as you would blend out your contour because it’s going to be on our face, right? It’s going to be staying there for a few days,” says TikToker Abby Baffoe in a viral video sharing her self-tanner contour routine. Once the product has been evenly blended to your liking, allow it to sit for a few hours before you wash your face and reveal your new contour. You’ll be looking snatched for days.

Fake your freckles

If you love adding faux freckles to your makeup routine, a self-tanner can make it easier to achieve a more natural, semi-permanent freckled look. Depending on your desired end result, there are several techniques that you may want to test out. For all-over-the-face freckles, you can add your fake tanning product of choice to a spray bottle and do a couple of spritzes as you would with a setting spray — but don’t get too carried away. Once set and dry, dab your face with a towel to unveil a natural-looking layer of faux freckles. For a more localized look — say, a smattering of freckles over the nose — you’ll find that everyday beauty tools like tweezers, spoolies and toothbrushes can be used to flick or dab your self-tanner across the desired area and atop your makeup (or on a bare face if you’re going makeup-free). No matter your preference, each of these methods will give an abstract finish that looks much more authentic than hand drawing each freckle.

Line your lips

From overlining to using plumping glosses, there always seems to be a new way to hack our lips into looking larger and fuller. Well, here’s another one — lip contouring with self-tanner. This temporary trick allows you to define your lipline while leaving behind a naturally lined look with no filler needed. Using a small makeup brush, you’ll want to dip into your fake tan and trace the outline of your lips as you would with a lip liner pencil. (Hot tip: Extending the line ever so slightly beneath your lip will give an even more contoured effect.) After the tan has settled, your lips will be left with a darker outline, which will give the illusion of a fuller, naturally contoured pout.

Tint your brows

Love a bold brow? Allow a self-tanner brow tint job to be your next TikTok-inspired beauty venture. In one video on the app with over nine million views, TikTok user @tiktokteenagers documents her process while trying this hack — and in the second part of her video, she reveals successfully tinted brows that appear thicker and more thoroughly filled out. To recreate the look, grab a self-tanner in a shade that is most similar to your natural brow colour. Then, use an angled makeup brush to fill in your brows, emphasizing any areas that look particularly sparse. After you’ve cleaned up the edges with a Q-tip, use a spoolie to evenly disperse the product throughout the brow. After one hour, you may want to wipe away some of the product around the perimeter of your brow to avoid any harsh lines that may dry down too dark. Finally, after an additional two hours, wipe your brows with micellar water and observe your freshly tinted new look.

The cold, windy winter months get a bad rep for making skin dry, uneven, and prone to breakouts. But for some of us, these unwanted skin issues are ongoing—even as the weather warms up. In the heat of the summer, the right hydrating products make all the difference when it comes to a supple complexion. How can this be achieved? Through an easy, everyday regimen that moisturizes and smooths the skin, without it feeling greasy. Luckily, Aveeno®’s new Tone + Texture collection was formulated to do just that.

It all comes down to the ingredients. The derm-recommended brand has long been known for harnessing the nourishing and moisturizing benefits of colloidal oatmeal. Along with this versatile topical ingredient, Aveeno®’s Tone + Texture collection is packed with skin-conditioning components, including niacinamide—a form of vitamin B3 that brightens while helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Also on the list are polyhydroxy acids (PHA) which are gentle chemical exfoliants that even skin tone and texture. This trifecta is the basis of Aveeno®’s new collection, comprising the Tone + Texture Daily Renewing Lotion, the Tone + Texture Renewing Night Cream, and the Tone + Texture Renewing Body Scrub. When used in tandem, the trio tackles three non-negotiables for healthy-looking summer skin: tone, texture, and moisture. Here’s how it works:

Improved skin tone

From discolouration and visible pores to fine lines and an uneven complexion, dull skin is a downer—especially when trying to achieve a summer glow. Enter: Aveeno®’s Tone + Texture Daily Renewing Lotion. Formulated with four per cent natural PHA, the lotion, nourishes the skin while gently exfoliating, resulting in a more even skin tone in just one week. To continue the tone-correcting goodness at night, the Renewing Night Cream is formulated with six per cent natural PHA to improve skin tone while you sleep.

Smoothened texture

Rough, bumpy, or scaly skin is all the more evident (and annoying!) in the summer. Often the result of dryness or a buildup of dead skin cells, skin texture issues can lead to keratosis pilaris, a common condition resulting in tiny pimple-like skin-coloured bumps. And while regular exfoliation sloughs off the top layer of dead skin to tackle texture and reveal a brighter glow, it can also be harsh. That’s why Aveeno®’s Tone + Texture collection employs non-abrasive ingredients to gently remove build-up for refreshed skin while being suitable for sensitive skin.

Long-lasting moisture

Dry skin is simply not conducive to high-season dewiness. Moisturization always matters, but with the humidity, it’s all the more important that our summertime regimens aren’t heavy or greasy, as this causes breakouts. Thankfully, Aveeno®’s Tone + Texture collection is non-comedogenic—meaning it won’t clog your pores—and is specifically designed for sensitive skin. The Daily Renewing Lotion gives all-day comfortable hydration amid rising summer temps, while the Renewing Night Cream intensely nourishes skin all through the late hours. Free of fragrance, parabens, and dyes, both instantly soften skin without it feeling oily.

The bottom line

You don’t need a 10-step routine filled with expensive oils and elaborate toners to achieve effortless-looking summertime radiance. You just need some reliable favourites (don’t forget your SPF!). Whether you’re a skincare maven or a product-curious newbie, Aveeno® is always approachable and affordable, thanks to a unique blend of nature and science that only gets better over time. Case in point: The Tone + Texture collection is sustainably-minded from formula to packaging, using bottles made with 30 per cent post-consumer recycled plastic—so you can feel good about what you put on your skin from start to finish. This season, refreshing your complexion has never been so easy.

Verb drops a purple leave-in mist

It’s no secret that purple hair products are a blonde’s best friend. We’ve been told time and time again that in life, we should never stop learning. And with the help of our monthly deep dive into the wild world of TikTok beauty hacks, it feels like we never will. Since it’s officially mid-July, that means we’re due for another round of #beauty-tok approved tips and tricks!

RELATED: 10 #PerfumeTok-Approved Scents to Shop Now

Last month, we were all about learning how to underpaint our makeup, Mary Phillips style, and whiten our teeth without aches and pains (even if you struggle with teeth sensitivity!). This month, we’re getting into DIY nail art, makeup-proofing our sunglasses and hacking hat hair. So without further ado, scroll on for the beauty hacks I’ve learned on TikTok this month.

Make your sunglasses makeup-proof

@parmidarobateau

I use this trick all year long, but especially in the summer 🌞🤍 put a little translucent powder on your sunnies or regular glasses for smudge free makeup! #summerhacks #smudgefreemakeup #sunglasses #beautytips #makeuphacks

Let’s kick this month’s segment off with something short, sweet, and incredibly useful. We all know that wearing sunglasses over a freshly made-up face during a hot and sweaty summer can be a nightmare — but no longer! Racking up over two million views, this TikTok by @parmidarobateau demonstrates the quick hack that’s bound to change your summer for the best. To avoid having your makeup slide off the bridge of your nose and onto your sunglasses, tap into a translucent powder and press it onto the nose pads of your shades. The result? Sweat-proof, slip-free sunnies that don’t ruin your makeup. Finally!

As far as loose setting powders go, this one is a holy grail. Get glowing with this butterfly technique

When professional makeup artists spill their best tips and tricks on TikTok, we listen. Celebrity MUA Lisa Eldridge shows us how to achieve glowy skin in just five seconds using what she calls the “butterfly” technique. Though Eldridge uses this method in between takes on set to bring a little glow back into her client’s faces, this hack is easy enough for anyone to try. All you’ll need to do is apply a liquid highlighter to the outer edge of your hands and press it over your cheekbones in a butterfly wing-shaped motion. To blend it out, tap it in with your fingertips. “What’s really great is that this [outer] part of your hand is the perfect shape just to fit into that [cheekbone] area,” she says in her video. “I believe that hands are often the best makeup tools.” Touché.

Get that “butterfly” technique glow with E.l.f Cosmetics’ Halo Glow Highlight Beauty Wand. From golden shades like “Champagne” to deep “Berry Radiant,” this product offers up a luminous pop of colour that’ll have you beaming like no other. Plus, its lightweight liquid formula makes it perfect for this hack.

When summertime rolls around, we don’t always feel like caking makeup on — but we still want to look snatched and keep our brows in check. So what do we do? We take notes from Canadian TikToker @tarasigari and the summer edition of her “high maintenance things to do in order to be low maintenance” series.

For her full-brow look, she lines her eyebrows with a lip balm (or Vaseline!) before applying a tint and letting it sit for just five minutes. You’ll be left with bomb brows that only took minutes — but last for up to *three* weeks. As for faking chiselled cheeks, Sigari applies self-tanner along her cheekbones, nose, and eyelids (a technique you may recognize from our TikTok-Approved self-tanner beauty tricks story) to get a longer-lasting contour. We can confidently say that sitting through one high-maintenance beauty session is worth having a summer full of low-maintenance makeup routines, indeed.

Aura nails are everywhere this summer, and now they’re easier than ever to recreate at home. Forget an airbrush, you can achieve this ombre pattern using nothing but two polishes of your choice and a makeup sponge. Following TikTok user @glossytipped ‘s lead, begin by painting a circle onto the back side of your sponge with the lighter shade of your two polishes. Then, fill in the centre of the circle with your darker shade before pressing the sponge into your nail to reveal the “aura” design. Lastly, clean up the perimeter of your nail with nail polish remover and lock in your masterpiece with a swipe of top coat.

Hack hat hair with an elastic

Hair hack expert @mariaaiellohair strikes again with another viral video — this time walking us through how to avoid a face full of hair when wearing hats this summer. Using a single elastic, you’ll want to gather the face-framing pieces of hair from either side of your face into one ponytail, if you will, beneath your chin. Next, take that ponytail and flip it over your head like a headband to keep that hair out of your face before popping your hat on.

Designed to cater to curls, Kerasilk’s latest launch is a wash-day must-have for textured tresses. Enter: the Curl Balm. Infused with biomimetic silk and carnauba wax, this conditioning curl cream activates and defines every kink and coil while taming frizz and keeping shrinkage at bay for up to 72 hours. That’s three whole good hair days, folks! And as a curly girl myself, I’d say this product’s “refined, controlled, beautified” mantra is one us curlyheads can get behind for sure.

Youth to the People’s Superfood Air-whip Moisture Cream just got an upgrade

Photography Courtesy of Youth to The People

Upgrade alert: Youth to the People’s Superfood Air-Whip Moisturizer is back and better with more hydration than ever. The revamped product is still packed with skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid and a superfood blend of kale, spinach, and green tea — only this time hydration levels have been amped up to six times more than before and can last for up to 48 hours. What’s more, its gel-like texture makes it the perfect selection for a lightweight, summertime moisturizer.

Inkbox’s second nail art drop has arrived

Photography Courtesy of Inkbox

Earlier this year, we were obsessed with Inkbox’s ability to bring its tattoo aesthetic to the world of nail art via nail strips. This week, the DIY tattoo brand announced the expansion of its first nail art collection with an additional eight patterns. Veering away from drop one’s edgier, tattoo-inspired designs, drop number two features fun and fashionable patterns like houndstooth and animal print. If there’s one thing we love, it’s a manicure made easy — and this is it.

Clinique

When it comes to skincare, the inclusion of SPF and moisturizers should be non-negotiables in our beauty regimens. Luckily, Clinique’s latest offering is a hybrid of both! The Moisture Surge SPF 28 Sheer Hydrator packs a glowy punch, while star ingredients like penetrative fermented aloe + HA Complex and provitamin D help stabilize hydration. In addition, the SPF 28 component filters up to 96% of UV rays and protects the skin from potential sun damage — which can manifest as newly developed or deepened dark spots, plus visible signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles.

Since the release of her debut single in 2014, singer-songwriter Kelsea Ballerini has earned herself several musical accolades, such as Country Music Awards, Grammy nominations and multiple #1 singles. But in a phone interview with FASHION, the singer revealed that one of her biggest dreams just came true last year, when she signed on to be the newest face of CoverGirl.

At the age of 14, Ballerini wrote in a journal that she dreamed of becoming a CoverGirl. Now, one year into her role as the face of the brand, Ballerini is living proof that manifestation is real. Though she’s a frequent (and hilarious) TikTok user, the country-pop star says she hasn’t yet come across #manifestationtok — the side of TikTok flooded with manifestation mantras and affirmations — but truth be told, she doesn’t seem to need it.

Photography Courtesy of CoverGirl

This CoverGirl has always been firm in her belief that she’d be a makeup artist if she weren’t a musician, and now she’s doing it all. From living her makeup artist fantasy as her own makeup artist on tour to becoming a CoverGirl and country music icon, Ballerini is as intuitive as she is talented.

Before signing off to go get glammed up (or to go “Hannah Montana” as she calls it) for her next performance, Ballerini caught up with FASHION to chat all things makeup and manifestation.

You’ve said in the past that you’d be a makeup artist if you weren’t a singer. Why is that?

“I just always found it to be a creative outlet, even when I was super young and before I was technically allowed to wear it outside of the house. My mom would let me play in her makeup bag and it was always a form of expressing myself. And then when I got older, before prom, dances, homecoming games and stuff like that, I’d do my friends’ makeup and it just became one of my love languages, really.”

What is your “desert island” makeup product that you can’t live without?

“Mascara! It always makes me look awake. It’s like coffee for your eyeballs, you know? For the longest time I would experiment with different mascaras and I did eyelash extensions but then I was like, this is not great for my lashes. I want to find something that really works. I grew up with CoverGirl mascara. As I got older and learned how to do my own makeup (I do it on tour now and everything), it’s just become my staple, especially Cleantopia [mascara].”

We’ve heard you manifested becoming a CoverGirl by writing about it in a journal as a teenager. Have you manifested anything else in your life?

“Before I really knew what the term manifesting was, I’ve just always believed in being really intentional about your dreams, what you want to align with, and just working towards it. Obviously, that takes work but it also takes actively calling to you and for you. Since I was a little kid, I’ve always wanted to be a country singer. I’ve always wanted to be a CoverGirl. I’ve always wanted to drive a Jeep. I’ve always wanted to have a dog. Things like that I’ve always just put out there and worked towards.”

You only used CoverGirl products at the 2023 Grammy Awards. Why is it important for you to show young fans that great makeup products can be accessible and affordable?

“I like being able to show that CoverGirl makeup can go from being out and about, having a day of running errands, to being onstage. It can live throughout any part of your life.”

What was it like working with the legendary Dolly Parton?

“We rehearsed in Nashville before we went to Vegas for the show, and it was 9AM on the dot — she walked in wearing full Dolly Parton glam, band ready, greeted everyone by name and led the charge for that rehearsal. [It was amazing] watching the amount of respect she commanded from her team and how comfortable she was. She was Dolly from the second she walked in the door. She’s someone who could be late and could be whatever she wanted to be, but still is just everything you’d want her to be. Lovely, kind, smart, thoughtful, mindful.”

Speaking of early mornings: are you a morning or nighttime routine person?

“I am a gremlin in the mornings! Like genuinely until I have coffee and wash my face, I don’t classify myself as a person. It’s coffee first and then a very cold face wash. That will slowly help me come to life. So I don’t think I really enjoy [the routine] until it’s post-show, end of the day, taking off the glitter, foundation, and everything then really taking care of my skin. So the next day when I put it back on, I don’t have to cover anything up. It’s just time to play.”

The journey to a streak-free self-tanning solution has been a long and winding road, one featuring unfortunate streaks, unpleasant scents, dyed-orange palms, and plenty of stained bathroom counters. But the latest developments make the wait worth it.

Mists, waters and mousses that go on clear and develop gradually, over a few hours after application, make it nearly impossible to create a mess. Below are our favourite self-tanning products that you can’t screw up. Trust us.

Dolce Glow D’Oro Self Tanning Lotion

Coming to you from the Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez-approved beauty brand Dolce Glow, this moisturizing D’Oro Self Tanning Lotion offers up a medium to dark bronze tan that is buildable, fast drying, and non-transferrable. It’s a total triple threat!

NUDA Self Tanning Water Mousse

The express formula within Nuda’s newly launched Self Tanning Water Mousse allows you to create a customized tan that develops to your liking — depending on how long you leave the product on before rinsing. This way, you can adapt your tan to your skintone and the results you’re looking for.

Bondi Sands is always a go-to when it comes to self-tanning, and the release of products like this revolutionary foam proves why. Available in four shades, the new Technocolour line of one-hour express foams aims to enhance the beauty of your natural skintone without changing it.

Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun Sunless Tanning Mousse

A post shared by Jergens US (@jergensus)

The OG of gradual self-tanner, there’s a reason Jergens is still a go-to. This mousse definitely allows you to see colour instantly, but it does deepen over a few hours, so use less than you think you’ll need. That being said, it adds a natural glow and never goes on streaky, so it’s still super foolproof.

St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Bronzing Water Mousse

This clear mousse is freshly scented (hibiscus flower and green mandarin water) and goes on clear, revealing glowy skin after four to eight hours.

Clarins Self Tanning Milky-Lotion

A post shared by Clarins Canada (@clarinscanada)

Allow us to reference a Sephora.com review for this one: “This is my new favourite self-tanning product. 1st: it smells AMAAAAAZING. It doesn’t smell anything like a self tanner— just a nice smelling body lotion. 2nd: it is so hydrating 3rd: it leaves such a nice bronzy colour to my skin and is never streaky. It lasts about a good week before starting to “shed” off. Highly recommend. Clarins did an amazing job with this product.” Need we say more?

Thrilling news from another cruelty-free advocate: certified B Corp beauty brand The Body Shop has just unveiled their latest flagship store at Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre. One of six Changemaker’s Workshops in Canada, the new location is focused around celebrating local communities. “Our goal was to create a physical space that people truly want to be a part of,” said Hilary Lloyd, VP of brand & corporate social responsibility at The Body Shop North America in a press release. “Whether learning about our incredible products and testing them through our sink experiences, or engaging in Changemaking through our Act station, a space dedicated to petition signing and advocacy, the Workshop retail experience is different, and people are noticing.” At the new location, The Body Shop has collaborated with artist Laura Moore who’s handmade repurposed textile artwork is on display. The new location also serves up major nostalgia with limited edition throwback t-shirts on sale, with proceeds supporting the brand’s Changemakers Youth Fund.

Cosmetic testing will be no more in Canada

Great news for Canadians: after years of tireless advocacy from animal rights groups across the country, Bill C47 is finally coming into play. On June 23rd, the Canadian government passed an amendment to the Food and Drug Act that will ban the testing of cosmetic products on animals in the country, effective in December. Cruelty-free cosmetics brands have been advocating against animal testing for years. For instance, Lush Cosmetics has been collaborating with organizations like Humane Society International and the Animal Alliance of Canada since 2013 to help make this major milestone happen.

“The passing of this bill is historic because Canada is joining a growing group of countries which have decided to outlaw cruel and outdated animal testing,” Lush global ethical director Hilary Jones tells FASHION. “This ensures that the public can shop with peace of mind knowing that what they pick up on the shelves has not been tested on animals. The legislation bans testing of ingredients and finished products on animals as well as banning the sale of animal-tested cosmetics products within Canada. This means that Canada’s ban also influences foreign based companies, because if they wish to sell their products into Canada they too must ensure that no animal testing was involved.”

The brand’s long-term efforts involved campaigning in Lush shops, participating in Parliament committee hearings and rallying support from over 150,000 people who sent messages to the Canadian government. A major win for Lush and Canadians everywhere, as 87% of citizens are in favour of a nationwide ban on animal testing for cosmetics.

What’s slick, sleek and chic all over? A slicked-back bun, of course.

Worn for decades in Black and brown communities, backed by seemingly every content creator on TikTok, and worn by trendsetting models like Bella Hadid, it’s clear that this slicked-back style has major staying power.

Its cleanliness gives off a polished look that everyone loves — hair that’s been styled but not overdone. It snatches the face for a naturally sculpted model-off-duty look. It’s simple enough to style. But there is a fair amount of personal preference and self-assessment that should come into play before you attempt a slicked-back bun. Ultimately, the success of this style is largely determined by the products you choose.

Sure, a brush and a holding product of some sort are the absolute bare necessities, but your dream slicked-back bun may be the result of a more personalized and involved concoction of products. Do you prefer the finish of a cream or gel? Does your hair type require products with extra hold? To mousse or not to mousse?

From must-have brushes to frizz-taming favourites, we’ve rounded up 10 of the best slicked-back bun essentials to help keep strands sleek and stray hairs in check without leaving behind a greasy finish or product build-up. If you’re on #BeautyTok, there’s a good chance that within a few minutes of scrolling you’ll come across someone in a lab coat dissecting the ingredient list of the viral SPF you’ve been eyeing. And if you’re a fragrance enthusiast, your FYP is likely flooded with influencers unraveling the mysteries of aroma compounds, or breaking down the history behind an iconic hand soap. Whatever your beauty question is, TikTok creators have the answer.

Ever since the introduction of long-form content on the platform in 2022, an impressive number of real-life beauty experts and researchers have cropped up on the app, delivering thoughtful insights into the industry while keeping us engaged. These are the TikTok creators deep-diving into the world of product development and formulation to show viewers what goes into creating our most beloved beauty items. Of course, TikTok is the place to get inspo for your next mani, learn new beauty hacks and become hypnotized by showy unboxing videos, but now it’s a great educational resource, too. Here, we’re sharing 7 TikTok creators in the beauty space that you should be following if you want to learn something new.

Dr. Michelle Wong

Known as Lab Muffin Beauty Science, Dr. Wong has been a staple in the online beauty world since starting her blog and YouTube channel over ten years ago. With over 400k followers on both YouTube and Instagram, she’s established herself as a major influencer and is steadily growing on TikTok with 91k followers. On all platforms, you’ll find her sharing her vast knowledge of ingredients and enlightening viewers about the truth behind various beauty claims, like what medical grade skincare really means, and if certain drugstore hair care products are as “toxic” as they are often made out to be. Armed with a scientific background (she has a chemistry PhD and works as a cosmetic chemist), Wong challenges misleading marketing tactics and presents evidence-based explanations to help her followers understand what really works.

Charlotte Palermino

Dieux co-founder Charlotte Palermino calls herself “your beauty industry fairy godmother,” and honestly, she feels like it. A former Cosmo editor, she’s beloved by her fan base of over 668k combined followers on TikTok and Instagram for her candid, matter-of-fact takes on the beauty industry. As a licensed esthetician, she has the knowledge to back up her opinions, but she often features dermatologists on her platform to support and expand on her hot takes. In addition to covering everything from her distaste for TikTok buzzwords (see: clean girl aesthetic) and why you should take anything you see on the internet with a healthy dose of skepticism, she also shares peeks into her real-life adventures and offers genuine reviews of products she loves.

Javon Ford

L.A.-based Javon Ford is one of our favourite cosmetic chemists on TikTok who wants you to rethink your multi-step beauty routine. He believes in keeping things simple and effective, going against the grain and urging his followers to focus on what their skin needs rather than chasing the next big thing. But he doesn’t only cover the science behind your favourite skincare and explain why you definitely shouldn’t be replacing your SPF with plant oils. He also touches on topics like the science behind pigments in makeup, tips for caring for textured hair, and even test-drives the most outlandish TikTok beauty hacks so you don’t have to—and he does it all in a thoughtful, entertaining way.

@thelipsticklesbians I kept on seeing this @YSL Beauty Candy Glaze Lip Gloss Stick all over TikTok, and I had so much FOMO that I had to touch it for myself. Perfect opportunity, as usual, during a local @sephora haul. And of course Christina made me play the beauty brain game, where I guess where a product is made! Ultimately I was not surprised where this one was made after touching and feeling the formula, which to me feels super modern and nails a beautiful blend of shine and cushion with a melting sensoriality. The novelty of this formula is a perfect example of when formula meets packaging, where the supported stick allows for this type of melting sensation to take place without being messy. The audible click is a nice accessible add on so folks know how much to propel or repel. Overall I’m impressed! “In my 20s, if I had $40 in my bank account but I was out of shampoo and conditioner, I would overdraft the shit out of my bank account,” says Jonathan Van Ness over a Zoom call. “Instead of getting food, I would get hair products.” Sound familiar? The hairstylist, Queer Eye star and founder of JVN Hair, sounds like an IRL Carrie Bradshaw, who famously said in Sex and the City‘s fourth season: “When I first moved to New York I was totally broke. Sometimes I would buy Vogue instead of dinner. I just felt it fed me more.”

RELATED: Did Sofia Richie Grainge Just Bring Back the Side Part?

During our call, the grooming guru and fan favourite from Netflix’s Queer Eye illuminates my screen with their megawatt smile, abundance of curls, a pop of green eyeshadow, and a bubbly nature that radiates all the way from across the pond — and my laptop screen. Since FASHION last spoke with Van Ness, they’ve embarked on a new leg of his comedy tour, Queer Eye has returned for its seventh season, and JVN Hair has launched a Pride haircare set in collaboration with GLSEN. (Van Ness is non-binary and uses the pronouns “they,” “he,” and “she” interchangeably. We’re using “they” in this article.)

Needless to say, there was a lot to catch up on. Ahead, Van Ness spills it all.

On finding self-confidence through hair and hairstyling

“I’ve been behind the chair since I was 18. I’ve seen the transformation in clients when they make a change. I see that in the most reason season of Queer Eye, too. It’s like, wanting to change your hair in some way, asking for help, having the courage to try something new, saving your money to do it—there’s a lot of risk. I think when we take risks and it works out for us, that is a confidence-building exercise.”

On the genderless approach to creating JVN products

“I always felt really ostracized from beauty growing up because I was assigned male at birth and so I always had the idea that beauty, or expressing your beauty, was more of a female thing and not really for males. Also when it comes to my girlfriends, queer friends, non-binary friends, whether they’re really into beauty or not into it at all, they’re shamed either way. It’s like either you’re not femme enough or you’re too femme, or you’re too highly sexualized or not enough. There’s always this commentary on the way that you’re presenting yourself. I hate that. And I also hate the idea that men don’t feel comfortable enough to express their beauty or ask questions.”

A post shared by JVN Hair (@jvnhair)

“But when it comes to gender, men’s and women’s hair is pretty similar. Like, you put it under a microscope, you can’t tell if it’s a man’s hair or a woman’s hair. So I want people to not be afraid to express themselves and have the tools to achieve whatever look they want. That’s why I try to take gender out of haircare, because it’s already too much a part of everything else. I think that hair is for everyone.”

On balancing being a brand founder and not needing products to feel beautiful

“If you ever look at my Instagram stories you’ll see how I don’t mind being on camera with my hair not done, no makeup on. I feel really beautiful whether I’m fully camera-ready or not. I know that my beauty and my worth isn’t dependent upon how I look on the outside. That’s what I mean when I say, ‘You’re already beautiful and you’re already worth celebrating,’ whether or not you’re choosing to style your hair.”

“So if you are going to style your hair I want you to do it because you want to do it and because this is how you choose to express yourself. I think that’s where JVN hair comes in. I want to give you tools for you to express yourself.”

On what makes JVN Hair stand out

“I felt like there was an opportunity for me to make stuff that was inclusive of all hair types, works really well, and wasn’t like $500 by the time you got all the products you needed. And I know there are other products that are not as expensive as mine, but they don’t work as well. We really are proud of the price point that we were able to create and the variety of looks that you can achieve.”

“I do hope that transparency and positivity and inclusivity has helped the brand stand out, of course, but because I am kind of a snobby hairdresser in my heart, I hope it’s also because our formulas work really well. The way that we do everything is really about achieving your hair goal versus what your hair type is because, truthfully, so many things work on many hair types. I just want people to achieve their hair goals.”

On their current psoriasis scalp struggles

“I have a lot of dry flakes coming from my scalp which actually makes me feel insecure. It also is the itchiest on my scalp when I get psoriasis. My Pre Wash Scalp Oil really helps hydrate, gets the flakes out, and allows me to rub something soothing onto my head.”

Jonathan Van Ness hair oil

“Just because I’ve been more confident and understand how to style my hair better doesn’t mean that there are not times where I still don’t feel 100% about my hair.”

On embracing wearing their hair down

“All the men in my family lost their hair at some point between the ages of 18 and 30. I don’t know how much longer I’m going to have my hair, so as long as I have my hairline, and as long as this Propecia is working — Imma have this hair long!”

On how beauty helped them explore their sexuality

“I remember dating guys and hiding my heels in a closet. Like I had all my heels, my wigs, and all my hair stuff in a hidden part of the closet because I didn’t want someone who I was dating to see that I always loved to wear heels and I liked to style my hair and I had all these mannequins because I wanted to style their hair. Beauty really helped me ultimately realize that it was more important to be true to myself than to have the validation of potential people who I was attracted to. I think it also helped me realize that anyone who’s going to love me or want to be with me should do it because they’re into the fullness of who I am — not this one shell of who I think you want me to be.”

On the importance of role models and getting into politics

“I think possibility models are really important for us, to see people like us and recognize aspects of ourselves and other people that are older than us. It gives you a possibility model of something that you could achieve. I had Rudy Galindo when I was little. He was the 1996 US men’s figure skating champion, he won nationals, and he was openly gay and openly HIV-positive. He was fearless, open, expressive and incredible. I loved him. I still love him now.”

“At the same time, I wish that we held our politicians to the same standard that we hold our public figures to. As soon as I get my bag together, I’m going to run for office, honey. I really am.”

On the idea of hair holding memories

“That is totally accurate. I know for me, if I’m going through something or I go through a loss or significant trauma, I remember everything that was going on at that time. I remember how I would style my hair and what I was doing clothing-wise. Everything reminds you of those sorts of eras and everything can become a reminder. So I think hair can totally hold onto memories and having a physical change to your look totally resets your relationship with the world. You feel different, and your hair hits you different. When you change the physical sensations that you have, I just feel like it shakes things up. Sometimes it’s more exciting to feel those differences than it is to sit with your grief, pain or whatever.”

As a kid growing up in the late ’90s, I constantly felt self-conscious about my body. Diet commercials played 24-7 and trendy workout videotapes were in every household. It seemed no one around me was happy with their body the way it was, which taught me that there must be something wrong with my own body. Specifically, I was concerned about my round belly. I fantasized about waking up with a flat stomach and washboard abs à la Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. By 13, I was avoiding all my favourite snacks and doing stomach crunches in my bedroom every evening. I felt desperate to be thin. I criticized myself for years, when in fact, there wasn’t anything wrong with me. What was wrong was the message society was sending me: because I wasn’t a size 0, I wasn’t worthy of feeling beautiful or sexy.

It wasn’t until I was 25 that I even considered wearing a bikini in public, and that was all thanks to body-positive influencer Gabi Gregg, aka Gabi Fresh, who coined the term “fatkini.” I remember seeing one of her blog posts, featuring pictures of her in a beautiful retro-style bikini. I was in awe of how gorgeous she looked and thought about how liberating it would feel to bare my own belly in public. So when I was packing for a family vacation to Grenada, I shoved my first bikini into my luggage. I liked how I looked in it when I tried it on at the store. But when we arrived at our vacation rental, the idea of wearing it out in public suddenly felt very daunting. I was filled with hesitation. What if people stare? What if someone insults my body and my confidence comes crashing down?

I know I’m not alone in how I felt at that moment. According to a study done by Gillette Venus, one third of Canadian women feel uncomfortable being in swimwear in public* and 79 per cent of Canadian women have avoided swimwear due to being uncomfortable in it in front of others.* And it’s not just about our weight—a lot of women are self-conscious about body hair, which can also prevent them from strutting their stuff on the beach. While, 90 per cent of Canadian women shave when they anticipate having to put on swimwear*, whether you choose to remove hair or rock it au naturel is up to you. Others’ opinions should never keep you from living your most liberated, confident life.

The day I finally wore my bikini to the beach, no one batted an eye. In fact, a stranger told me I looked beautiful. It turns out you don’t need a special diet or workout secret to have a beach body. The only things I need today are swimwear that makes me feel sexy, protective SPF and skin-loving Venus products. The Venus range is perfect for any body with or without hair since it’s all about loving the skin you’re in and taking good care of it.

It’s been 10 years since I discovered the body positive movement and found the confidence to rock any type of swimwear, and sadly, diet culture is making a sneaky comeback. But I refuse to go back in time. Join me and Venus this summer in ripping up the old-fashioned rulebook. Want the ultimate beach body? Grab a cute swimsuit, slap on some SPF and grab the Venus products that make you feel comfortable in your skin. There you have it—you’ve got a beach body!

Shop for Gillette Venus at GilletteVenus.ca.

*Methodology: From May 1 to May 5 2023, Gillette Venus conducted an online survey among a representative sample of 1,007 Canadian women ages 18-34, balanced and weighted on age and gender. All respondents were members of the online Angus Reid Forum. For comparison purposes only, a sample of this size would yield a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.

UPDATE: On June 16, Doja Cat released “Attention,” a new track that leans into the singer’s reputation for viral beauty transformations. The lyrics quip at those who call her “ugly,” and the music video shows her covered in red paint, one of her most shocking looks yet. With this release, Doja Cat cryptically announced on Twitter that “Scarlet is here,” which is speculated to be a new alter ego. On Instagram, her latest beauty look shows her with blood-shot eyes, facial piercings and a decidedly edgier aesthetic. With her fourth studio album slated for later this year, Doja Cat’s penchant for transformation remains front and centre of her artistry.

A post shared by Doja Cat (@dojacat)

When it comes to makeup, Doja Cat is a woman of the world. She had her E-girl phase. She long embraced an alien aesthetic. Now, after shaving her head and eyebrows, she has entered an “I’ll try anything” era. And we’re all better for it.

To mark the start of Paris haute couture fashion week on January 23, the pop star further cemented herself as a boundary-breaking beauty icon — no catwalk necessary. Sitting front row at the Schiaparelli Spring 2023 show, Doja Cat was adorned head to toe in ruby-red Swarovski crystals. The look — which reportedly took nearly five hours to complete and involved 30,000 hand-applied gems — was created by famed makeup artist Pat McGrath, and speaks to the Planet Her singer’s multidimensional beauty prowess.

Just two days later, Doja Cat attended Viktor & Rolf show in Paris on January 25, wearing an androgynous look with false eyelashes as facial hair. Later the same day, she arrived at the Valentino show with a completely new aesthetic.

This is not the first time Doja Cat has made the front row of fashion week her creative playground. If history is any indication, it also certainly won’t be the last.

Recall, back in September 2022, when Doja Cat (quite literally) went out shining to commemorate the end of Fashion Month. At the Awake Mode show on October 4, the 27-year-old stepped out with her skin covered in a glimmering layer of gold thanks to makeup artist Laurel Charleston.

In fact, while attending events across the city, Doja Cat sported variations of sculptural eyebrows, body paint and intergalactic illustrations. To attend the Mônot show on October 1, her face was coated in white, with dark blue contouring and bright red lipstick. On her forearms, black designs mimicked the look of opera gloves.

Earlier that same day, she attended the Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood show with a completely different ensemble — because, of course. Thin spikes sat in place of eyebrows and dark lightning-bolt eyeliner crept onto her nose.

As the week went on, her looks got more shocking — hence the aforementioned gold finale. For the Givenchy show, makeup artist Sophia Sinot gave her smudged black checkerboard-design lips with studs for eyebrows. To attend a party hosted by Beyoncé, the singer’s whole face became an optical illusion thanks to an expertly-placed swirling line. “After I was finished she asked me if I could sign her neck like an artist signs their work when they’re finished,” Charleston wrote on Twitter. Herein lies the genius of Doja Cat’s maquillage mantra.

Think about it: for the Grammy-winning singer, makeup is yet another way to perform. And lately, she’s been leaning heavily into this aspect of her artistry. After shaving her head and eyebrows on Instagram Live over the summer, Doja Cat has used her face as an unrestricted canvas. More and more, the singer goes against the beauty grain — from painting her own detailed facial designs to sporting a cow pattern on her head. With each new wonderfully weird look, she advocates for beauty as a means of art instead of a boring background feature.

These days, show-stopping style statements are hard to come by. With minimalist makeup routines reigning supreme and red-carpet looks often blandly replicating the runway, there’s a lack of risk-taking among celebrity beauty. Doja Cat, on the other hand, uses makeup as an accessory that’s up for interpretation and meant to garner a reaction.

Case in point: for the Balenciaga show back in October, she sported an eyeshadow look that resembled a black eye and split lip. “I think people are going to love it,” she told Vogue. “And I think that, as they do, people are also not going to love it.” But either way, Doja Cat doesn’t seem to care. The thing is, this subversive style isn’t supposed to appeal to everyone. Who can forget when Lady Gaga wore her meat dress to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards? She was ridiculed at the time, but it’s since gone down as one of the biggest moments in recent fashion history.

Of course, an important element of any memorable ensemble is the personality behind it. Doja Cat stands out not only because of the masterful creations on her skin, but the passionate energy that she carries with each design.

As we head into a new Fashion Month, we can surely expect even more surprising surrealist Doja Cat statements. By pushing against beauty boundaries and sporting thought-provoking paintings on her face, the star’s makeup aesthetic continues to be unapologetically unique. And isn’t that what art is all about? In the immortal words of TikTok: I don’t want to be pretty, I want to be iconic. If that’s Doja Cat’s mission, consider it accomplished.

The beauty industry’s sustainability issues are complex, layered and constantly evolving, but while its gaze is often set on creating a future that is more environmentally responsible (with major strides being made when it comes to things like reusable, recyclable and refillable packaging), brands’ social efforts can be overlooked. Social sustainability involves examining the impact that businesses have on people and communities and consistently working toward improving that impact. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring that fair labour practices and living wages are being met and that community members are given opportunities for employment and economic growth.

Below are four brands that are committed to uplifting communities — both locally and globally — through initiatives that give back.

Cheekbone Beauty

The vision for Cheekbone Beauty came to founder Jenn Harper in a dream about lipgloss back in 2015. “I saw these Indigenous girls with the rosiest cheeks — they were so happy,” she shares.

What began as a dream (literally) has transformed into so much more. In 2021, Cheekbone Beauty became the first Indigenous-owned brand to be carried at Sephora Canada. The Canadian makeup brand still functions with the well-being of Indigenous youth at its core.

“That dream came at a time when I was seeking to learn why my community constantly struggles,” says Harper. “And when I learned about the residential-school system and the transgenerational trauma it caused, it all started to make sense.”

To date, Cheekbone Beauty has donated over $200,000 to causes that support Indigenous youth (such as the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society and the Shannen’s Dream organization). The company launched the Cheekbone Beauty Scholarship Fund for Indigenous students in 2021 and offered its first recipient $2,500. In 2022, the prize pool expanded to award five recipients $2,500 each.

“I want to show that you can use business as a force for good,” explains Harper. “We aren’t just building a brand that sells lipsticks; the real power of Cheekbone Beauty is that it is creating space for the representation of Indigenous kids and creating awareness about the issue of unequal funding for Indigenous youth.”

Evio

A post shared by EVIO BEAUTY (@eviobeauty)

The inspiration for Canadian brand Evio came at a time when founder Brandi Leifso needed an escape: in 2012, when she was seeking refuge from an abusive relationship at a domestic-violence relief shelter.

She is frequently asked “Why did you stay?” — a question that often carries an undertone of guilt and shame directed at her, the survivor. This biased line of questioning is one thing that motivates Leifso to support other survivors. She says that her personal history allows for a special connection between her brand and the more than 27 shelters and integrated programs across North America that she works with. These programs support survivors and children of domestic violence and work toward breaking the cycle of abuse.

“I have the privilege of being in a really fortunate position now,” says Leifso. “And I’m able to assist while also understanding how we might be able to challenge biases and stigmas from those who haven’t experienced these kinds of circumstances.”

In an inspiring power move, the brand launched its first body-care line — the Body Autonomy collection — earlier this year. For the campaign, the Evio community wrote letters detailing what bodily autonomy means to them. The launch “highlighted that each individual has the right to choose what’s best for them,” shares Leifso.

L’Occitane

Social sustainability

French beauty brand L’Occitane’s 40-year mission to source African shea butter began in the early 1980s, when founder Olivier Baussan flew to Burkina Faso in search of “women’s gold” — the skin-loving butter derived from shea trees. In the four decades since, shea butter has become a key ingredient in the brand’s products. The team of women (whom the brand calls “guardians of the shea trees”) bringing this butter from “tree to skin” has multiplied from around a dozen to over 10,000.

In 2018, Justine Humbert, L’Occitane’s biodiversity and sustainable ingredients manager, was part of the team that founded the brand’s RESIST (Resilience, Ecology, Strengthening, Independence, Structure and Training) program, which strives to improve the economic and climate resilience of its workers through co-operatives with three main goals in mind.

“First, we want to look after the shea trees and ensure they will still be there tomorrow so that the women will be able to earn an income,” says Humbert. “Next, we want to modernize processes with the addition of machinery and motorized equipment, because the traditional method uses a lot of wood and is physically demanding work. And third, we aim to make these women more self-sufficient and less dependent on L’Occitane orders, which is important for a balanced, healthy relationship.” Beyond the program, L’Occitane’s efforts have helped the workers attract new shea butter consumers and take ownership of their production facilities.

Today, L’Occitane is working with five co-operatives in Burkina Faso and Ghana, where the brand purchases locally crafted fair-trade shea butter. “This 40-year partnership shows that economic development, women’s inclusion in the workplace and biodiversity regeneration can be merged to create a path forward,” says Humbert.

Lxmi

Social sustainability

When Anna-Maja Björkenvall took over the role of Lxmi CEO after the passing of founder Leila Janah in 2020, she continued the brand’s existing relationships with women-run co-operatives in Africa and South America. Björkenvall is maintaining Lxmi’s mission to employ and empower women across the globe while creating excellent beauty products.

“We don’t start with a product in mind; we start with an ingredient in mind,” she explains. This was also the way Janah worked. She partnered with fair-trade women’s co-operatives in Northern Uganda to help source what has become the brand’s signature superfood ingredient: nilotica.

Lxmi pays East African women around three times the local living wage for their services sourcing nilotica. As Janah once said in an interview with Fast Company, “We can address poverty while also making our skin better.”

Uninterested in creating skincare products driven by trends, Lxmi focuses instead on perfecting its formulations. “The mission for us is not to crank out products,” explains Björkenvall. “It’s creating mindfully crafted plant-based products.”

Along with nilotica, the brand uses ancient superfood ingredients found in many of nature’s untapped ecosystems, such as the South Suriname-sourced hydrating tuhka Brazil nut oil and antioxidant-rich kigelia extract. “There are amazing ingredients out there and amazing people sourcing them,” she says. “We’re just the vehicle for these stories to come together.”

With her sophisticated style and ability to turn just about anything she does into the latest trend, there’s no doubt about Sofia Richie Grainge’s It girl status. And the American socialite has proven her influence yet again by wordlessly reviving a bygone (and somewhat controversial) hair trend — the side part.

RELATED: It’s the Summer of Sofia Richie Grainge

In a playful TikTok of Richie Grainge and her friend, comedian Jake Shane, lip-synching to Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and Aqua’s new collaboration for the Barbie movie soundtrack, the newlywed casually debuted her hair styled with a deep side part that left viewers reeling.

@sofiarichiegraingebarbie world♬ original sound – Young Money

“No side parts are not back you guys don’t look like her,” wrote one commenter. “This is not a drill side parts are back in,” wrote another user. And perhaps no other response captured what thousands were thinking more than this one: “PS. On behalf of all millennials, thank you for giving the side part the justice it deserves. It’s been hard out here!”

But why is the return of this once-beloved hairstyle so divisive?

If you were on TikTok back in the summer of 2020, you’ll surely remember the playful feud that broke out between some Gen Zs and millennials when user @missladygleep said, “Prove me wrong, but I don’t think there is a single person who looks better with a side part than they do a middle part.”

Since then, debate over the once extremely popular hairstyle has continued on social media, but it wasn’t until Richie Grainge’s latest video that people seem to be reconsidering the look — and attempting to emulate it.

For many millennials, side parts (often featuring distinctly swoop-y bangs — think Rihanna in her Pon de Replay era) were a defining aspect of their style identity during their teen and early adult years in the late ’90s and early 2000s. This is directly opposed to many of Gen Z’ers preferred hairstyles, who typically opt for a middle-part these days, often slicked back into “clean girl” buns.

Side parts have their place in beauty history, too. Icons such as Marilyn Monroe and even Jessica Rabbit, for example, were known for their deep, dramatic side parts and pinned-up curls, which are still the standard of vintage glamour today.

According to Pew Research Centre’s definition of the generations, Richie Grainge herself is part of Gen Z, which is especially interesting when you consider how historically unpopular side parts are with the generation. But, as she paired the hairdo with a chic all black outfit and classic Chanel accessories, Richie Grainge proved yet again that her personal sense of style transcends modern trends, fads and even popular opinion.

The hairstyle seems to be a risk that’s already paid off, too. Despite the initial shock from some people, tons of the socialite’s followers are already embracing the new look and trying Richie Grainge’s new side part for themselves.

And, if this trend is anything like others that Richie Grainge has set, side parts may just be here to stay — whether we’re ready or not.

How These Two Creators Are Exploring Self-Expression Through Hair As They Re-Experience The ‘90s https://fashionmagazine.com/sponsored-content/90s-pride-ogx-hair/ Mon, 19 Jun 2023 11:00:37 +0000 https://fashionmagazine.com/?p=471693 Myles Sexton and Jamie Pandit share more about their hair journey and evolution, right in time for Pride.

The post How These Two Creators Are Exploring Self-Expression Through Hair As They Re-Experience The ‘90s appeared first on FASHION Magazine.

]]>

Nostalgia reigns supreme in today’s world—so many of us find ourselves consistently captivated by the trends and styles of bygone eras. The latest societal fixation? The ‘90s. An iconic array of hairstyles are making a triumphant return to the forefront of mainstream fashion—from top knots, crimped hair and frosted tips to butterfly clips and gravity-defying ponytails.

But beauty and hair nostalgia, with all its enchantment, is a privilege that often eludes those from marginalized communities. It’s a wistful journey down memory lane that is not always accessible to everyone. For many individuals, historical beauty standards and trends may have served as reminders of exclusion and, often, discrimination.

Myles Sexton’s (they/them) and Jamie Pandit’s (she/her) walk down memory lane has required them both to hold space and grace for their past selves *and* give themselves the permission—that they so rightfully deserve—to live loudly and boldly. With their favourite nourishing, protective and reparative haircare products in hand (because you don’t have to choose between serving a look and the health of your hair with OGX)—from the classic OGX Hydrate and Repair Argan Oil of Morocco Extra Strength Shampoo and Conditioner to the OGX Protecting + Silk Blowout Quick Drying Thermal Spray—they’ve charted a course and set out to liberate their ‘90s selves to show up and show out. After all, it’s Pride, baby.

Myles’ OGX Favourites:

I’m a ‘91 baby, so I’ve lived through the many hair moments of the ‘90s. I had a mullet, a mushroom cut, a spike bang, a rat tail, a shaved undercut—the works—and I loved them all (maybe not so much the mushroom cut, but you know what I mean). Hair and fashion trends from that era were fierce and so detailed, but they were also effortless in a way—if you get it, you get it.

As I’ve gone through the evolution of my hair journey, I’ve realized that my hair plays such a critical role in my self-confidence. I feel like my hair has been the centrepiece of my gender expression. All these versions of Myles, my different eras, live within me. So when I see particular hairstyles out and about, it brings back many memories and emotions from specific periods of my life. As much as I played with my hair, I wasn’t always able to fully lean into expressing myself with my hair until my senior year—from access to the confidence and surety of self; there were so many reasons why I couldn’t and didn’t play and express myself through my hair.

I have many full-circle moments these days—I give myself the most permission to embrace what I want to do with my hair. We all have those moments that manifest into shame within us. Dealing with this internalized shame by sitting with it and understanding where it came from, it’s liberating. I’m reclaiming my power, one hairdo at a time. I’m exhaling, and I’m washing my shame away.

My wash day routine is self-care, and it’s spiritual. I take a moment to check in with myself and be present as I work my product through my hair and rinse it away. I love using products, including OGX’s Hydrate & Revive line, that are nourishing for my hair, and that smell delicious—it’s an experience and those baby blue OGX bottles are a classic. And I’m an active participant in that moment.

Looking back and tapping into nostalgia means going back in time and giving myself permission to simply be. I’m crimping, I’m back-combing, I’m braiding, and I’m emulating a mullet. That baby Myles is within me, and one of the ways I reparent them is by playing with my hair in the ways I know they wanted to.

Jamie Pandit

She/Her, digital creator, fashion expert, influencer

@fashionmagazine

Here’s a peek into digital creator @justjamiepandit’s memorable Pride weekend in Toronto. She gave her younger self a chance to truthfully experience the ‘90s with butterfly clips and her favourite @ogx_beauty products. “Butterflies are incredibly significant to many transgender folks due to their transformative nature. After all, I have been cocooned long enough, hiding who I am and wanting to be free. This Pride, I did just that. I unleashed my essence through my outer shell, spread my wings, and celebrated Pride proudly with my husband and friends. We hugged, cried and danced until our feet hurt. I felt so beautiful from every positive compliment and I got to walk down the streets of Toronto loudly and boldly as a transgender woman. I am proud of her. Little Jamie is proud of her.” How did you celebrate Pride this year? 🦋✨

♬ original sound – FASHION

Jamie’s OGX Favourites:

Sometimes I wish we didn’t attach femininity so much to hair, but my hair has been a massive part of my identity as a transgender woman. My hair has been a safety net. I have stretch marks on my shoulders that my hair has hidden, and when people commented on them or said that I have “really broad shoulders for a woman,” my hair protected me then, too.

Looking back, it’s always been this way. I remember throwing tantrums anytime my parents wanted to cut my hair when I was a kid. I came to Canada when I was 11, so truthfully, so much of what I saw as not just dreamy ‘90s beauty and hair, but beauty and hair, in general, was informed by my life in Bangladesh. Seeing all the South Asian women around me with their long hair made me believe this was a core tenet of being feminine. Long, luscious, thick, shiny hair flowing naturally or pulled up into an intricate updo is all I wanted—reminiscent of every ‘90s Bollywood starlet.

I didn’t know what the word transgender meant or how to describe myself even. But I did know that I wanted to explore myself through my hair. When I transitioned at 15, I felt like I couldn’t go outside unless my hair was long and beautiful—I needed to look a certain way to leave my house comfortably. Because I didn’t start growing my hair out until I was around 16, I can’t say I have fond memories of my hair. The one time I tried to explore by getting blonde streaks in my short hair doesn’t feel like it counted because I didn’t feel like, well, myself.

Transitioning and not having the proper support when it comes to life, as well as taking care of your hair and skin, is rough. I had to figure it out on my own. I’ve burnt my hair and put it through a lot of stress. But my nourishing shampoo and conditioners from OGX, paired with my heat protectant, are my go-to now—they protect and repair my hair. I’m excited to play with my hair and explore that world of hair self-expression without compromising the health of my hair and scalp, thanks to OGX’s range of products. I find myself excited to lean in and start exploring the parts of myself that I get to wake up and breathe life into. I have this divine feminine energy within me, and I’m honouring that—not because I’m a trans woman, but because that’s me.

Butterflies are incredibly significant to transgender folks—transformation and all—so I’m excited to play with butterfly clips. I’m giving baby Jamie a chance to experience the ‘90s as trends come swinging back around—she’s been cocooned long enough. The thought of breaking out as a beautiful butterfly and spreading my wings is exhilarating and liberating, all at once.

This is Texture Talk, our long-running column that deep dives into the dynamic world of curly hair, from crowns of curls that are free flowing to strands that are tucked away in a protective style.

Siphesihle November — Siphe for short (pronounced “See-pay”) — has quite the origin story.

He hails from Zolani, a South African farming township east of Cape Town, where his natural rhythm captivated a visiting Canadian family when he was a child. The serendipitous encounter led to an audition for Canada’s National Ballet School, and at the age of 12, the young talent was accepted into the prestigious academy on a full scholarship, leaving his mother and siblings behind.

RELATED: Four Canadian Creatives On Their Signature Locs

November joined The National Ballet of Canada upon graduation and in 2021, at age 22, was promoted to principal dancer, making him one of the youngest principal dancers and only the second Black one in the company’s 72-year history. Here, November talks to FASHION about his journey and how his signature locs are integral to who he is as an elite Black male ballet dancer.

Locs are his one constant

I’ve had my signature hair look — shaved sides with free-flowing locs on top — since around the 11th grade. My locs are an extension of my personality, and I like the idea that they’re that one trademark about me, especially since I’m always wearing different clothing looks.

My personal style, which I would describe as minimalist and simple, is also a huge part of my self-expression. I like to think of fashion as me expressing myself without having to say very much; I’m not very social — I don’t really talk a lot — but I like the idea that people can identify or see what I’m about through what I’m wearing. That’s how I like to approach my style.

Open-minded bosses are key

I’ve been very lucky to have had kind and understanding directors at The National Ballet of Canada who have supported me and given me the freedom to find my own signature hair look as a Black classical dancer. In the past, there were conversations about whether I should wear wigs or not and what the performances would look like with my natural locs.

But now, as a principal dancer, I have the liberty to choose how I want to express myself — within limits. I think a big part of it is changing the narrative around the hairstyle — that locs can be clean. Another part is allowing a dancer with natural hair to be seen in their own light.

In a way, my hair is like my own form of activism within my field, and unless it’s a complete mess, it doesn’t take away from my dancing. And as opposed to me always having to defend that, I like to throw it back as questions to people who think otherwise: Did my natural hair affect my performance? Did it affect your enjoyment of it? Nine times out of 10, the answers are no, and I think we need to normalize that aspect of it more.

There are challenges, but that’s OK

I would say that moving to Canada and training at the National Ballet School was the goal, but ending up where I am today was unexpected in so many ways. I never thought that I’d get to this level as a dancer — I never knew that I could work this hard.

And what came along with my journey — the challenges, the roles, the social aspects of being a Black male dancer in the classical space — was really unexpected, too. They are things that I embrace every day, and I think that the more I lean into them, the more I’m able to find my purpose.

Leading the way feels good

A funny little story: A fellow dancer in Europe told me, “You inspired me to loc my hair.” And now he’s performing onstage with his own interpretation of the hairstyle. It’s quite interesting to see him expressing himself in that way and navigating what that means for him.

Right now, I’m happiest with the dialogue — the transparency and accountability — that I think many institutions are having. They are asking themselves “Are we open?” There’s a willingness to listen and a willingness to change, which is beautiful to see. I mean, the industry is nowhere near perfect, but I think what’s happening is the groundwork for greater things to come.

It’s just so dope to know that the next generation, which you don’t even have a personal connection to, will be in a better situation than the one you were part of. And being involved in that work — to be available to assist in any way — makes me proud and happy.

To ring in its one-year brand anniversary, Rhode is blessing us with the launch of a glossy new skincare innovation. Introducing Glazing Milk, the latest addition to the Rhode lineup and an “essential prep step” in achieving that widely sought after, hydrated, Hailey Bieber glow. Powered by a barrier-boosting trio of nourishing ceramides (the fatty acids found naturally in our skin that make up about half of our skin barrier), this creamy facial essence delivers an instant dose of soft sheen, while a skin-loving blend of magnesium, zinc, and copper in the formula helps to visibly plump up your complexion.

In a virtual Glazing Milk masterclass hosted by Rhode’s Head of Product Development Sarah Jones, a group of Canadian beauty editors and press soaked up all there is to know about this new release. “It’s perfect to use right after your cleanser, when you need to pack some moisture right into your skin and before you go into your next step—serums,” explains Jones. She also advised giving the product a shake before use to activate the tiny microemulsions within the formula and ensure you get a perfect pump of product every time.

Once you’ve patted the essence into your skin, you’re all prepped and ready to proceed with the rest of your skincare routine knowing your skin barrier is thanking you for it. “As Hailey says all the time: ‘A happy barrier is a healthy barrier!'” shared Jones. And our skin couldn’t be happier about bathing in Rhode’s Glazing Milk.

We’ve got big news in the Canadian beauty space! This week, singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk was announced as the official brand ambassador of Back to Earth Skin — a 100 per cent natural Canadian beauty brand with a clean beauty ethos. Known for her powerhouse vocals and philanthropic pursuits, Kreviazuk’s embodiment of the brand’s core beauty, sustainability, and ethical beliefs make her the ideal candidate for this partnership.

In a recent Zoom interview, Kreviazuk tells FASHION she was a fan of Back to Earth Skin before she had even been tapped for this ambassador role, and she had already been using the brand’s products organically in her skincare regimen (her favourite is the moisturizer). “I really liked the products and I loved that it was called Back to Earth,” she says. “I loved everything that I was being educated on, and everything I learned about its origin and the mission and all of our shared values.”

Having front-row access to the inner workings of the Canadian beauty industry, Kreviazuk tells us she feels a strong push forward in the beauty sphere. “I think the thing that’s exciting to me about Canadians in general but also the Canadian value system and [beauty] regulations is that we’re eliminating the bad stuff from our products. We’re protecting our citizens,” she shares.

In this new partnership, we’re excited to witness Kreviazuk continue to use her voice to advocate for the importance of natural beauty, the practice of self-care, and sustainability in the beauty industry. “I just want to make people feel like this is fun and exciting and it works! Get into a regimen of health and beauty and embrace your most organic self.”

As beauty trends ebb and flow, we put our beloved brows through a lot.

They’ve endured being overplucked, brushed up for maximum fullness, and bleached to a barely-there state. But our latest obsession is somehow even more extra than the rest. Enter: brow gems.

RELATED: The Beauty Hacks I’ve Learned on TikTok This Month

Consider this brow look (which has appeared everywhere from Peter Do and Chanel runways to Lady Gaga’s Instagram feed) a more editorial extension of “browscaping” — the trend in which brows serve as the foundation for creative expression, making them the focal point of a makeup look. And as far as experimentation goes, an eyebrow chock-full of brow gems surely says something.

Whether you’re preparing for Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour, a Pride party, or you’re still in your Euphoria era, here are four ways to bling out your brows using rhinestones (and perhaps a steady hand).

Fake a bleached brow

Not willing to take the bleached brow plunge? Skip the commitment and mimic that bleach-blonde look by using champagne-coloured rhinestones, like these ones you can pick up on Amazon or at your local craft store. First, create a barrier between your real brows and the gemstones by spackling on a thick layer of stick glue. Next, use a coat of your favourite brush-on lash glue to act as an adhesive before you apply the gems on top of your brows. Taking advice from makeup artist Katie Farhood who posted this look on TikTok, fill in any remaining gaps with a brush of fine gold glitter.

Try Renaissance-tour-ready diamanté brows

It’s an unspoken rule that silver chrome is part of Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour dress code, and this diamanté brow look by TikTok user @charhairchar is sure to elevate your futuristic ensembles. Once you’ve completed your brow routine as usual, @charhairchar recommends using a rhinestone picker to help pick up your gems, so that your placement can be as precise as possible. Grab your silver rhinestones using the tool and apply a light dab of lash glue to the bottom of the gem. Allow the glue to get tacky and then proceed to place each brow gem wherever you’d like. If this look isn’t giving Alien Superstar, we don’t know what is.

Build a new brow

Why go through the hassle of trimming, sculpting, or filling in your precious brows to achieve a new shape when you can simply fake it with gems? On TikTok, professional makeup artist @laramiemakeup began this look with a blocked-out brow base so that a new brow shape can be drawn on. The shape in question? An ultra-thin, blinged-out 90s brow made up of multicoloured rhinestones in varying shapes and sizes.

Add a rainbow tail

This Pride month, upgrade your glam with this rainbow brow tail look posted by TikToker Craig Hamilton. Using a thick concealer (like Tarte’s Shape Tape) and glue to carry out the aforementioned brow-blocking technique, you’ll want to conceal the tail end of your brow so you’ve got a blank canvas to apply your rhinestones. Use a pair of tweezers (or your rhinestone picker!) to help apply your miniature brow gems in a rainbow-coloured sequence and you’re all set.

We don’t know about you, but we’ve been pleasantly surprised by this wave of warmth and sunshine we’ve been having in place of dreary April showers. Sure, it’s technically spring, but that fact that it also feels like spring? Groundbreaking. It also means that a slew of new sunscreen launches have arrived right on time.

We can all benefit from the protective properties that sunscreen offers, like helping to prevent sunburns, skin cancer, and premature signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines. The SPF of our beloved sunscreens is an indicator of how well a sunscreen can protect against UVA and UVB rays, and we should be aiming to use products with a minimum SPF of 30.

Here’s the thing: We love sunscreen and all that it does for us, but finding one that blends well with our makeup and doesn’t leave behind a white cast or a greasy finish is no easy feat. It’s true that you should be applying sunscreen daily and all year round, but if you’ve neglected this step during the winter months or haven’t found a sunscreen that works for you, allow us to introduce 14 new SPF-packed products we think you’ll love. From multifunctional creams to dewy serums, there’s a face sunscreen here for everyone.

Another month, another dose of TikTok beauty hacks here to shake up your GRWM game! And if there’s one thing we know about #beautytok, it’s that you never know what bizarre beauty hacks you’ll find yourself putting to the test. Case in point: glueing down your bangs and turning a deodorant bottle into a facial roller, as seen in last month’s beauty hacks column. This month we’re getting into celebrity-approved tips and tricks, plus one hack that’ll make completing a classic hairstyle easier than ever.

From breaking down Hailey Bieber’s makeup artist beloved “underpainting” contour technique to unpacking the surprising shade of blush worn by Victoria’s Secret Angels for their signature sun-kissed beauty look, here are the beauty hacks I’ve learned on TikTok this month.

Sculpt your face with the viral Mary Phillips underpainting technique

If you don’t frequent #beautytok or haven’t seen an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race then you may not have heard of underpainting— but you’ve certainly seen it on your favourite celebs. It’s the secret behind Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber’s chiselled glam look, after all. Recently popularized by their very own MUA Mary Phillips, this technique involves contouring and concealing beneath your foundation — as opposed to the standard practice of completing these steps on top of your complexion base.

In her first TikTok post earlier this year, Phillips can be seen carving out her cheekbones, jawline, and forehead with bronzer followed by a bright layer of concealer and highlighter — all before she goes in with a foundation. “It’s like laying down the bones under the skin. So the contour and the highlight being the bones, and the skin being the foundation,” she says in her post. Wondering when blush comes into play? The MUA revealed in another post that she layers this step over her foundation so that the pigmentation can really come through.

Have sensitive teeth? You can still whiten them with this pain-free solution

Let’s face it — we all want a pearly white smile. But is it worth suffering through the aches and pains that can develop during the whitening process if you have sensitive teeth? We think not. When TikTok mogul Alix Earle shared that her Crest Whitestrips were too painful to wear for their recommended length of time, TikTok user @gilliandelzotto came to the rescue with a quick (and cost-effective!) hack to achieving a whiter, brighter smile without the pain. Using the same whitening strips seen in Earle’s video, Del Zotto explains that cutting the strips in half is the key to alleviating the ache. “Typically our most sensitive teeth is here [at the bottom of our teeth] from just wear and tear, grinding down, eating,” she says. “So if you lay them right on top of your teeth and not curl them under, you’ll have no pain.” In the end, she says, you’ll be left with double the whitening strips and much less pain.

For decades, we marvelled at the bombshell beauty looks that came down the runway at Victoria’s Secret fashion shows — but who would’ve thought that a red blush was behind their natural flush? RMS Beauty founder and makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift took to her brand’s TikTok account to reveal that while working backstage with the Victoria’s Secret Angels, red was her go-to shade of blush. “What the red does is give that little bit of depth to it and it looks more natural,” says Swift in the video. “Almost like the sun kind of gave it a little hint of burn.” And as we’ve entered the month of June, swapping our pink blushes out for red is the beauty trick we didn’t know we needed to try this summer. To achieve the look, grab any cream blush shade with a red tint to liven up your cheeks.

Hack the perfect braid every time

The art of hairstyling is complex as it is, but attempting your own perfectly centred braid that hangs down your back in a proportionate manner is an entirely different beast. As seen in a viral video posted by @audreyvictoria_that racked up 37 million views, our next hack is the answer to all your plait prayers. Begin by sectioning your hair into three parts, and tie the middle section into a ponytail at the centre back of your head. Next, cross the remaining sections of hair overtop your ponytail to hide the hair tie and proceed to braid as usual with all three sections. Lock it in with another hair tie and there you have it — a picture-perfect plait hack that works every single time.

Blend your concealer flawlessly with this unlikely brush

Using an eyeshadow brush for concealer? Actually groundbreaking! This month, celebrity makeup artist Courtney Hart went viral on TikTok as she detailed her experience assisting other MUAs in the early stages of her career — during which time she witnessed these artists swapping out traditional concealer brushes for eyeshadow brushes to help blend out the under eye area. As demonstrated in her video, this technique begins by dabbing concealer onto the back of your hand before pressing the product into your eyeshadow brush. Next, you’ll use a buffing motion to blend it all out. “This just gives a very different finish than if you were swiping with a concealer brush,” she explains. “It very much gives an airbrush finish to the makeup.” Complete the look by softening the edges with a beauty sponge to give you that seamless final touch.

For many of us, wildfires have always felt like a faraway problem — that is, until recently. Last week, sepia skies and smog-filled air blanketed many cities as a result of raging forest fires in Quebec and northeastern Ontario, causing widespread panic and confusion.

As clouds of smoke descended onto areas like Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal — and past the border into Washington and New York — even those living far from the fires got a hefty dose of their hazardous effects. Deemed some of Canada’s most severe ever, the wildfires caused air quality alerts to be issued to millions and set off a general sense of foreboding. This, unfortunately, doesn’t seem to be coming to an end. As temps heat up and summer kicks off, experts are forecasting that the 2023 wildfire season could be worse than years past. While it’s hard not to feel anxious about what has been exhaustively referred to as apocalyptic circumstances, it’s increasingly important to know how to care for your body. Presenting: Your guide to navigating a smog-filled summer.

Avoid the effects of smog on the skin

“All this haze and soot and particulate matter damages the skin,” says Dr. Monica Li, a Vancouver-based dermatologist. Excess debris in the air clogs pores, leading to irritation which causes dryness, itchiness, redness, and breakouts. It can also inflame pre-existing conditions like rosacea, psoriasis and eczema. In the long run, smoke can accelerate premature signs of aging. But beyond that, it carries polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and Dr. Li notes that endured exposure to these components has been linked to skin cancer.

As such, part of protecting yourself means having a consistent skincare routine. Dr. Li recommends implementing an antioxidant into your regimen, like vitamin C serum, which can be applied after cleansing and helps reduce the oxidative stress on the skin caused by environmental aggressors. “You can apply it to the face, neck, chest and the back of the hands where you get the most direct exposure to smoke and poor air quality.” Next, she suggests gently exfoliating twice a week before bed to slough off any build-up. On an everyday basis, both your cleanser and moisturizer should be gentle and ideally fragrance-free, so as to not further irritate the skin. Look for a good moisturizer — with ingredients like lipids and ceramides — that will not only create a barrier but help strengthen the skin’s natural structure. And don’t forget the sunscreen. “People might think that when the smoke is so thick and hazy, UV rays don’t get through. But that’s not true,” says Dr. Li. Irrespective of the fog-shrouded atmosphere, be sure to wear sunscreen with at least 30 SPF and marked “broad spectrum,” meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Take extra care of your eyes and hair

Our eyes are extremely delicate, and smoke in the air can damage their mucous membranes, causing a burning sensation, dryness, and even blurry vision. So on days when the quality is bad, don’t neglect them. Dr. Li recommends wraparound sunglasses to give you panoramic protection or simply wearing your prescription specs outside to shield the eyes.

Soot can also settle in your hair, which might cause it to lose its smooth feel and shiny appearance. When particulates coat your scalp, they can cause the skin to be inflamed — for instance, prompting those prone to dandruff to experience worsened reactions. Not to mention, the pollutants that get stuck in your hair can transfer onto your skin, causing breakouts. To prevent this, try wearing a hat and tucking your hair into a bun on hazy days to minimize exposure. And when the air quality is particularly poor, wash your hair before bed, Dr. Li advises. Otherwise, it could rub off on your pillowcase while you sleep and transfer onto the skin.

Consider protection when you get dressed

Last week, experts were recommending masks to people in areas with air pollution warnings, like Toronto. Not only do they offer lung protection — which is particularly important for people with underlying conditions like asthma and heart disease — but they also shield the face. This mindset can be applied to getting dressed.

If you’ve been out during a poor air quality day, Dr. Li advises changing once you come inside. “[Maybe have] a set of outdoor clothes and a set of indoor clothes, so you don’t transfer the debris and dirt back into the house onto sofas, linens, pillowcases, and your own skin,” she says. If you can, she suggests looking into an air purifier to clean up any excess debris in your home. When it comes to outfit selection, it’s also good to opt for fabrics that retain less particulates. Clothes made from natural fibres like cotton and wool are more likely to absorb smoke particles, so, if possible, try steering clear of those when the 2023 wildfire smog is heavy. If the weather permits, protection via long sleeves and pants is ideal. For comfortable coverage during hot summer months, lightweight clothing, like loose-fitting linen, can provide a preventative layer while allowing your skin to breathe.

Moral of the story? “Think of [creating] physical barriers,” says Dr. Li. Whether it’s wearing a hat, sporting sunglasses, using a mask, or moisturizing your skin, these coatings can prevent damage from exposure. “The air quality index can be helpful to guide decisions,” Dr. Li notes, and when the pollution is visibly thick, it’s best to avoid going outside altogether, if you can. Of course, some of these precautions aren’t always possible. The important thing is that we’re aware of them, as we brace for the continued effects of the 2023 wildfire season.
