Through helpful hacks and clever tips, TikTok is endlessly inspiring us to use beauty products in unorthodox ways while educating us about how to do so in the process. Our latest fixation? Maximizing our self-tanner use with a couple of genius beauty hacks.

RELATED: The Best New Face Sunscreens To Add to Your Summer Skin Routine

We already love self-tanners for their bronzing capabilities, but we can get more use out of self-tanners than you might think. On TikTok, the #selftan hashtag has amassed more than one billion views across an infinite amount of videos — many of which include self-tanner tricks you didn’t even know you needed to try. From faking freckles to facial contouring, turns out self-tanners are indeed a multi-use product. Below, we unpack four self-tanner beauty tricks from TikTok and how to test drive them at home.

Chisel your cheeks

Who knew self-tanner could be a secret contour weapon? Content creators on TikTok are using this bronzing trick to sculpt cheekbones and achieve a natural-looking facial contour. To get the look, you’ll want to apply a pump of your self-tanner to a tanning mitt that’ll act as a makeup palette and allow you to have more control over how much product you use. Then, using a makeup sponge, begin applying self-tanner to your cheeks, forehead, nose, and jawline as you would typically apply your bronzer or contour products. “My best advice would be to blend it out as much as you would blend out your contour because it’s going to be on our face, right? It’s going to be staying there for a few days,” says TikToker Abby Baffoe in a viral video sharing her self-tanner contour routine. Once the product has been evenly blended to your liking, allow it to sit for a few hours before you wash your face and reveal your new contour. You’ll be looking snatched for days.

Fake your freckles

If you love adding faux freckles to your makeup routine, a self-tanner can make it easier to achieve a more natural, semi-permanent freckled look. Depending on your desired end result, there are several techniques that you may want to test out. For all-over-the-face freckles, you can add your fake tanning product of choice to a spray bottle and do a couple of spritzes as you would with a setting spray — but don’t get too carried away. Once set and dry, dab your face with a towel to unveil a natural-looking layer of faux freckles. For a more localized look — say, a smattering of freckles over the nose — you’ll find that everyday beauty tools like tweezers, spoolies and toothbrushes can be used to flick or dab your self-tanner across the desired area and atop your makeup (or on a bare face if you’re going makeup-free). No matter your preference, each of these methods will give an abstract finish that looks much more authentic than hand drawing each freckle.

Line your lips

From overlining to using plumping glosses, there always seems to be a new way to hack our lips into looking larger and fuller. Well, here’s another one — lip contouring with self-tanner. This temporary trick allows you to define your lipline while leaving behind a naturally lined look with no filler needed. Using a small makeup brush, you’ll want to dip into your fake tan and trace the outline of your lips as you would with a lip liner pencil. (Hot tip: Extending the line ever so slightly beneath your lip will give an even more contoured effect.) After the tan has settled, your lips will be left with a darker outline, which will give the illusion of a fuller, naturally contoured pout.

Tint your brows

Love a bold brow? Allow a self-tanner brow tint job to be your next TikTok-inspired beauty venture. In one video on the app with over nine million views, TikTok user @tiktokteenagers documents her process while trying this hack — and in the second part of her video, she reveals successfully tinted brows that appear thicker and more thoroughly filled out. To recreate the look, grab a self-tanner in a shade that is most similar to your natural brow colour. Then, use an angled makeup brush to fill in your brows, emphasizing any areas that look particularly sparse. After you’ve cleaned up the edges with a Q-tip, use a spoolie to evenly disperse the product throughout the brow. After one hour, you may want to wipe away some of the product around the perimeter of your brow to avoid any harsh lines that may dry down too dark. Finally, after an additional two hours, wipe your brows with micellar water and observe your freshly tinted new look.

To help us keep our skin in order, Murad is expanding its acne control collection with the introduction of the Rapid Relief Acne Sulfur Mask. They say that good things come in threes, and such is the case for this mask’s powerhouse blend of skin-clearing sulphur, exfoliating salicylic acid and hydrating Austrian peat extract.  In just three uses, this liquid clay mask has been clinically proven to minimize the size of pimples and reduce pore congestion, so you’re left with a clearer complexion overall. Beautycounter launches a plumping water cream

We’re pumped (or should we say, plumped?) about the arrival of Beautycounter’s Mighty Plump Ceramide Water Cream this week. With a ceramide-packed formula that plumps like filler and works like skincare, this weightless cream uses two types of hyaluronic acid to deliver a hydration boost and an instant plumping effect. Plus, it’s all stored in a recyclable glass jar that’ll look super chic on your bathroom counter until you’re done with it.

Verb drops a purple leave-in mist

It’s no secret that purple hair products are a blonde’s best friend. Working as a toner, the purple pigments help to neutralize yellow tones and brassiness so that you get a brighter, more balanced shade of blonde. And speaking of purple-hued haircare, New York-based haircare brand Verb has welcomed a new member to its purple product family, and it’s a must-have for those who rock blonde, silver, grey, or even highlighted hair. Introducing the Purple Leave-In Mist — a three-in-one toner, detangler, and hydrator made with açai extract and apple cider vinegar that boasts all of the colour-correcting benefits you’d expect and then some.

We’ve been told time and time again that in life, we should never stop learning. And with the help of our monthly deep dive into the wild world of TikTok beauty hacks, it feels like we never will. Since it’s officially mid-July, that means we’re due for another round of #beauty-tok approved tips and tricks!

RELATED: 10 #PerfumeTok-Approved Scents to Shop Now

Last month, we were all about learning how to underpaint our makeup, Mary Phillips style, and whiten our teeth without aches and pains (even if you struggle with teeth sensitivity!). This month, we’re getting into DIY nail art, makeup-proofing our sunglasses and hacking hat hair. So without further ado, scroll on for the beauty hacks I’ve learned on TikTok this month.

Make your sunglasses makeup-proof

@parmidarobateau

I use this trick all year long, but especially in the summer 🌞🤍 put a little translucent powder on your sunnies or regular glasses for smudge free makeup! #summerhacks #smudgefreemakeup #sunglasses #beautytips #makeuphacks

Let’s kick this month’s segment off with something short, sweet, and incredibly useful. We all know that wearing sunglasses over a freshly made-up face during a hot and sweaty summer can be a nightmare — but no longer! Racking up over two million views, this TikTok by @parmidarobateau demonstrates the quick hack that’s bound to change your summer for the best. To avoid having your makeup slide off the bridge of your nose and onto your sunglasses, tap into a translucent powder and press it onto the nose pads of your shades. The result? Sweat-proof, slip-free sunnies that don’t ruin your makeup. Finally!

As far as loose setting powders go, this one is a holy grail. Aside from being used for this sunglasses hack, the Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder sets makeup for up to 16 hours of wear with a flawless, oil-absorbing, matte finish. Available in three translucent shades, there’s something for everyone.

Get glowing with this butterfly technique

When professional makeup artists spill their best tips and tricks on TikTok, we listen. Celebrity MUA Lisa Eldridge shows us how to achieve glowy skin in just five seconds using what she calls the “butterfly” technique. Though Eldridge uses this method in between takes on set to bring a little glow back into her client’s faces, this hack is easy enough for anyone to try. All you’ll need to do is apply a liquid highlighter to the outer edge of your hands and press it over your cheekbones in a butterfly wing-shaped motion. To blend it out, tap it in with your fingertips. “What’s really great is that this [outer] part of your hand is the perfect shape just to fit into that [cheekbone] area,” she says in her video. “I believe that hands are often the best makeup tools.” Touché.

Get that “butterfly” technique glow with E.l.f Cosmetics’ Halo Glow Highlight Beauty Wand. From golden shades like “Champagne” to deep “Berry Radiant,” this product offers up a luminous pop of colour that’ll have you beaming like no other. Plus, its lightweight liquid formula makes it perfect for this hack.

When summertime rolls around, we don’t always feel like caking makeup on — but we still want to look snatched and keep our brows in check. So what do we do? We take notes from Canadian TikToker @tarasigari and the summer edition of her “high maintenance things to do in order to be low maintenance” series.

For her full-brow look, she lines her eyebrows with a lip balm (or Vaseline!) before applying a tint and letting it sit for just five minutes. You’ll be left with bomb brows that only took minutes — but last for up to *three* weeks. As for faking chiselled cheeks, Sigari applies self-tanner along her cheekbones, nose, and eyelids (a technique you may recognize from our TikTok-Approved self-tanner beauty tricks story) to get a longer-lasting contour. We can confidently say that sitting through one high-maintenance beauty session is worth having a summer full of low-maintenance makeup routines, indeed.

Achieve the aura nail look with a sponge

Aura nails are everywhere this summer, and now they’re easier than ever to recreate at home. Forget an airbrush, you can achieve this ombre pattern using nothing but two polishes of your choice and a makeup sponge. Following TikTok user @glossytipped ‘s lead, begin by painting a circle onto the back side of your sponge with the lighter shade of your two polishes. Then, fill in the centre of the circle with your darker shade before pressing the sponge into your nail to reveal the “aura” design. Lastly, clean up the perimeter of your nail with nail polish remover and lock in your masterpiece with a swipe of top coat.

Loved the ocean ombre look from this TikTok? You can shop the same shades used in the video! For the turquoise outer ring, you’ll want to pick up OPI’s “I’m Yacht Leaving” polish. And for the inner ring, try “Charge It to Their Room” from the same OPI summer 2023 collection.

Hack hat hair with an elastic

Hair hack expert @mariaaiellohair strikes again with another viral video — this time walking us through how to avoid a face full of hair when wearing hats this summer. Using a single elastic, you’ll want to gather the face-framing pieces of hair from either side of your face into one ponytail, if you will, beneath your chin. Next, take that ponytail and flip it over your head like a headband to keep that hair out of your face before popping your hat on.

For styles that require discreet hair ties that you don’t necessarily want to be seen, Goody is our go-to. These ouchless elastics keep your hair secure and are easy to remove without doing any damage. And if you’ve got a lighter hair colour, you can also shop them in a clear shade!

Designed to cater to curls, Kerasilk’s latest launch is a wash-day must-have for textured tresses. Enter: the Curl Balm. Infused with biomimetic silk and carnauba wax, this conditioning curl cream activates and defines every kink and coil while taming frizz and keeping shrinkage at bay for up to 72 hours. That’s three whole good hair days, folks! And as a curly girl myself, I’d say this product’s “refined, controlled, beautified” mantra is one us curlyheads can get behind for sure.

Youth to the People’s Superfood Air-whip Moisture Cream just got an upgrade

Upgrade alert: Youth to the People’s Superfood Air-Whip Moisturizer is back and better with more hydration than ever. The revamped product is still packed with skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid and a superfood blend of kale, spinach, and green tea — only this time hydration levels have been amped up to six times more than before and can last for up to 48 hours. What’s more, its gel-like texture makes it the perfect selection for a lightweight, summertime moisturizer.

Inkbox’s second nail art drop has arrived

Photography Courtesy of Inkbox

Earlier this year, we were obsessed with Inkbox’s ability to bring its tattoo aesthetic to the world of nail art via nail strips. This week, the DIY tattoo brand announced the expansion of its first nail art collection with an additional eight patterns. Veering away from drop one’s edgier, tattoo-inspired designs, drop number two features fun and fashionable patterns like houndstooth and animal print. If there’s one thing we love, it’s a manicure made easy — and this is it.

Clinique

When it comes to skincare, the inclusion of SPF and moisturizers should be non-negotiables in our beauty regimens. Luckily, Clinique’s latest offering is a hybrid of both! The Moisture Surge SPF 28 Sheer Hydrator packs a glowy punch, while star ingredients like penetrative fermented aloe + HA Complex and provitamin D help stabilize hydration. In addition, the SPF 28 component filters up to 96% of UV rays and protects the skin from potential sun damage — which can manifest as newly developed or deepened dark spots, plus visible signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles.

Since the release of her debut single in 2014, singer-songwriter Kelsea Ballerini has earned herself several musical accolades, such as Country Music Awards, Grammy nominations and multiple #1 singles. But in a phone interview with FASHION, the singer revealed that one of her biggest dreams just came true last year, when she signed on to be the newest face of CoverGirl.

At the age of 14, Ballerini wrote in a journal that she dreamed of becoming a CoverGirl. Now, one year into her role as the face of the brand, Ballerini is living proof that manifestation is real. Though she’s a frequent (and hilarious) TikTok user, the country-pop star says she hasn’t yet come across #manifestationtok — the side of TikTok flooded with manifestation mantras and affirmations — but truth be told, she doesn’t seem to need it.

Photography Courtesy of CoverGirl

This CoverGirl has always been firm in her belief that she’d be a makeup artist if she weren’t a musician, and now she’s doing it all. From living her makeup artist fantasy as her own makeup artist on tour to becoming a CoverGirl and country music icon, Ballerini is as intuitive as she is talented.

Before signing off to go get glammed up (or to go “Hannah Montana” as she calls it) for her next performance, Ballerini caught up with FASHION to chat all things makeup and manifestation.

You’ve said in the past that you’d be a makeup artist if you weren’t a singer. Why is that?

“I just always found it to be a creative outlet, even when I was super young and before I was technically allowed to wear it outside of the house. My mom would let me play in her makeup bag and it was always a form of expressing myself. And then when I got older, before prom, dances, homecoming games and stuff like that, I’d do my friends’ makeup and it just became one of my love languages, really.”

What is your “desert island” makeup product that you can’t live without?

“Mascara! It always makes me look awake. It’s like coffee for your eyeballs, you know? For the longest time I would experiment with different mascaras and I did eyelash extensions but then I was like, this is not great for my lashes. I want to find something that really works. I grew up with CoverGirl mascara. As I got older and learned how to do my own makeup (I do it on tour now and everything), it’s just become my staple, especially Cleantopia [mascara].”

We’ve heard you manifested becoming a CoverGirl by writing about it in a journal as a teenager. Have you manifested anything else in your life?

“Before I really knew what the term manifesting was, I’ve just always believed in being really intentional about your dreams, what you want to align with, and just working towards it. Obviously, that takes work but it also takes actively calling to you and for you. Since I was a little kid, I’ve always wanted to be a country singer. I’ve always wanted to be a CoverGirl. I’ve always wanted to drive a Jeep. I’ve always wanted to have a dog. Things like that I’ve always just put out there and worked towards.”

You only used CoverGirl products at the 2023 Grammy Awards. Why is it important for you to show young fans that great makeup products can be accessible and affordable?

“I like being able to show that CoverGirl makeup can go from being out and about, having a day of running errands, to being onstage. It can live throughout any part of your life.”

What was it like working with the legendary Dolly Parton?

“We rehearsed in Nashville before we went to Vegas for the show, and it was 9AM on the dot — she walked in wearing full Dolly Parton glam, band ready, greeted everyone by name and led the charge for that rehearsal. [It was amazing] watching the amount of respect she commanded from her team and how comfortable she was. She was Dolly from the second she walked in the door. She’s someone who could be late and could be whatever she wanted to be, but still is just everything you’d want her to be. Lovely, kind, smart, thoughtful, mindful.”

Speaking of early mornings: are you a morning or nighttime routine person?

“I am a gremlin in the mornings! Like genuinely until I have coffee and wash my face, I don’t classify myself as a person. It’s coffee first and then a very cold face wash. That will slowly help me come to life. So I don’t think I really enjoy [the routine] until it’s post-show, end of the day, taking off the glitter, foundation, and everything then really taking care of my skin. So the next day when I put it back on, I don’t have to cover anything up. It’s just time to play.”

Tropical floral tips

Give your springtime floral nails a seasonal makeover with this vacay-ready manicure. Summery shades of lime green, fiery tangerine, hot pink and Caribbean blue serve as the perfect base for colourfully contrasting floral details that pop. To add a bit of depth and dimension, try switching up the size and placement of your flower designs on each nail for a more abstract and unique-to-you look.

To nail this look, shop OPI’s “Me, Myself, and OPI,” collection. Shade’s like orange “Silicon Valley Girl,” and blue “NFTease Me,” will give you that summery burst of colour. Plus, its fast-drying formula makes last-minute mani’s a breeze.

Buy it here: OPI Lacquer Silicon Valley, $13

If you’re not quite ready to tackle drawing your own floral nail designs, then you need this set in your life! Makartt’s nail art foil sticker is equipped with all the floral add-ons you could ever need, and more. For best results, cure the foil transfer beneath a UV lamp (which you can also pick up from Makartt!).

Under the sea-inspired shell nails

It’s mermaidcore season, folks! That means it’s time to unleash your inner mermaid with these oyster shell-inspired nails. Elevate a standard blue manicure by introducing a layer of opalescent polish on top of a translucent jelly shade of aqua to create this velvety, aquatic-looking finish. We’re sure this look would get The Little Mermaid star Halle Bailey’s approval.

Want to get the jelly look without the gel? First, grab a blue polish like this one by L.A Colours. Then, mix a little polish together with a clear base coat to create that sheer finish. No gel needed!

Buy it here: L.A. Colours Craze Sea Siren Polish, $9

To add that oceanic shimmer, top off your “jelly” shade with this pearlescent polish. This sheer shade makes the perfect final coat overtop any colour of your choice. What’s more, it’s chip free — so you can rest assured knowing your manicure will withstand any summer activity.

Elevate your aura

If you’ve been looking for a sign to hop on the aura nail trend, here it is! This rainbow-hued set is sure to radiate good vibes and positive energy, so you can feel confident that this summer will be a good one. Using a blush pink polish as the base, layer droplets of your favourite summertime shades to create the “aura” effect. To take the look one step further, incorporate colourful, miniature beads to add a three-dimensional element to your manicure.

Photography Courtesy of Saviland

Nail art brand Saviland offers up a collection of nail brushes that can be used for all sorts of designs. To recreate the aura trend, dip into your desired shade with the dotting tool included in the set. Then, add the droplet overtop your pink base shade.

Colour block French claws

For this mani, bring back two classic trends: French manicures and good ol’ colour blocking. If you can never decide on a single shade of polish, why settle for one when you can have them all? Pro tip: Draw inspiration from your summertime wardrobe palette; that way your manis will always match your look!

Photography Courtesy of Sally Hansen

Loving this set’s matte finish? Give Sally Hansen’s Big Matte Top Coat a try. Sure you can shop a single matte-coloured polish, but this way you can mattify any colour you’d like — which makes achieving a uniform finish on a multicoloured look like this much easier.

Buy it here: Sally Hansen Big Matte Top Coat, $11

Achieve perfect French tips *every* time with a nail stamp. You’ve probably seen this tool on TikTok before, and we’re here to tell you it’s worth the hype. Simply add a swipe of polish onto the stamp, press the tip of your nail into it, and there you have it!

Buy it here: Saviland French Tip Nail Set, $16

A summer sun set

Still loving spring pastels? Try mimicking a summer sunset with this ombré manicure. Instead of having your ombré pattern run top to bottom on each individual nail, opt for soft yellows, pinks, purples and blues to help create a sunrise-to-sunset (or vice versa) effect across all five nails on each hand. As the summer months roll on, feel free to swap your pastels out for bold neons for a tequila sunrise-inspired heatwave manicure.

For your sun set mani, opt for pastel polishes like this one by Essie. This butter-yellow shade serves as the perfect starting point for the gradient look! And with a name like “Sunny Business,” you’ll be right on track with summer nail trends.

“In my 20s, if I had $40 in my bank account but I was out of shampoo and conditioner, I would overdraft the shit out of my bank account,” says Jonathan Van Ness over a Zoom call. “Instead of getting food, I would get hair products.” Sound familiar? The hairstylist, Queer Eye star and founder of JVN Hair, sounds like an IRL Carrie Bradshaw, who famously said in Sex and the City‘s fourth season: “When I first moved to New York I was totally broke. Sometimes I would buy Vogue instead of dinner. I just felt it fed me more.”

RELATED: Did Sofia Richie Grainge Just Bring Back the Side Part?

During our call, the grooming guru and fan favourite from Netflix’s Queer Eye illuminates my screen with their megawatt smile, abundance of curls, a pop of green eyeshadow, and a bubbly nature that radiates all the way from across the pond — and my laptop screen. Since FASHION last spoke with Van Ness, they’ve embarked on a new leg of his comedy tour, Queer Eye has returned for its seventh season, and JVN Hair has launched a Pride haircare set in collaboration with GLSEN. (Van Ness is non-binary and uses the pronouns “they,” “he,” and “she” interchangeably. We’re using “they” in this article.)

Needless to say, there was a lot to catch up on. Ahead, Van Ness spills it all.

On finding self-confidence through hair and hairstyling

“I’ve been behind the chair since I was 18. I’ve seen the transformation in clients when they make a change. I see that in the most reason season of Queer Eye, too. It’s like, wanting to change your hair in some way, asking for help, having the courage to try something new, saving your money to do it—there’s a lot of risk. I think when we take risks and it works out for us, that is a confidence-building exercise.”

On the genderless approach to creating JVN products

“I always felt really ostracized from beauty growing up because I was assigned male at birth and so I always had the idea that beauty, or expressing your beauty, was more of a female thing and not really for males. Also when it comes to my girlfriends, queer friends, non-binary friends, whether they’re really into beauty or not into it at all, they’re shamed either way. It’s like either you’re not femme enough or you’re too femme, or you’re too highly sexualized or not enough. There’s always this commentary on the way that you’re presenting yourself. I hate that. And I also hate the idea that men don’t feel comfortable enough to express their beauty or ask questions.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by JVN Hair (@jvnhair)

“But when it comes to gender, men’s and women’s hair is pretty similar. Like, you put it under a microscope, you can’t tell if it’s a man’s hair or a woman’s hair. So I want people to not be afraid to express themselves and have the tools to achieve whatever look they want. That’s why I try to take gender out of haircare, because it’s already too much a part of everything else. I think that hair is for everyone.”

On balancing being a brand founder and not needing products to feel beautiful

“If you ever look at my Instagram stories you’ll see how I don’t mind being on camera with my hair not done, no makeup on. I feel really beautiful whether I’m fully camera-ready or not. I know that my beauty and my worth isn’t dependent upon how I look on the outside. That’s what I mean when I say, ‘You’re already beautiful and you’re already worth celebrating,’ whether or not you’re choosing to style your hair.”

A post shared by Jonathan Van Ness (@jvn)

“So if you are going to style your hair I want you to do it because you want to do it and because this is how you choose to express yourself. I think that’s where JVN hair comes in. I want to give you tools for you to express yourself.”

On what makes JVN Hair stand out

“I felt like there was an opportunity for me to make stuff that was inclusive of all hair types, works really well, and wasn’t like $500 by the time you got all the products you needed. And I know there are other products that are not as expensive as mine, but they don’t work as well. We really are proud of the price point that we were able to create and the variety of looks that you can achieve.”

“I do hope that transparency and positivity and inclusivity has helped the brand stand out, of course, but because I am kind of a snobby hairdresser in my heart, I hope it’s also because our formulas work really well. The way that we do everything is really about achieving your hair goal versus what your hair type is because, truthfully, so many things work on many hair types. I just want people to achieve their hair goals.”

On their current psoriasis scalp struggles

“I have a lot of dry flakes coming from my scalp which actually makes me feel insecure. It also is the itchiest on my scalp when I get psoriasis. My Pre Wash Scalp Oil really helps hydrate, gets the flakes out, and allows me to rub something soothing onto my head.”

Jonathan Van Ness hair oil

“Just because I’ve been more confident and understand how to style my hair better doesn’t mean that there are not times where I still don’t feel 100% about my hair.”

On embracing wearing their hair down

“All the men in my family lost their hair at some point between the ages of 18 and 30. I don’t know how much longer I’m going to have my hair, so as long as I have my hairline, and as long as this Propecia is working — Imma have this hair long!”

On how beauty helped them explore their sexuality

“I remember dating guys and hiding my heels in a closet. Like I had all my heels, my wigs, and all my hair stuff in a hidden part of the closet because I didn’t want someone who I was dating to see that I always loved to wear heels and I liked to style my hair and I had all these mannequins because I wanted to style their hair. Beauty really helped me ultimately realize that it was more important to be true to myself than to have the validation of potential people who I was attracted to. I think it also helped me realize that anyone who’s going to love me or want to be with me should do it because they’re into the fullness of who I am — not this one shell of who I think you want me to be.”

On the importance of role models and getting into politics

“I think possibility models are really important for us, to see people like us and recognize aspects of ourselves and other people that are older than us. It gives you a possibility model of something that you could achieve. I had Rudy Galindo when I was little. He was the 1996 US men’s figure skating champion, he won nationals, and he was openly gay and openly HIV-positive. He was fearless, open, expressive and incredible. I loved him. I still love him now.”

A post shared by Jonathan Van Ness (@jvn)

“At the same time, I wish that we held our politicians to the same standard that we hold our public figures to. As soon as I get my bag together, I’m going to run for office, honey. I really am.”

On the idea of hair holding memories

“That is totally accurate. I know for me, if I’m going through something or I go through a loss or significant trauma, I remember everything that was going on at that time. I remember how I would style my hair and what I was doing clothing-wise. Everything reminds you of those sorts of eras and everything can become a reminder. So I think hair can totally hold onto memories and having a physical change to your look totally resets your relationship with the world. You feel different, and your hair hits you different. When you change the physical sensations that you have, I just feel like it shakes things up. Sometimes it’s more exciting to feel those differences than it is to sit with your grief, pain or whatever.”

In the acclaimed fashion film The Devil Wears Prada, the Anna Wintour-inspired character Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) delivers a nearly two-minute monologue on the significance of the colour blue — or not blue. Stylists, eager to impress their cutthroat boss, bounce frantically from rack to rack as the fashionably unaware assistant Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) marvels at their inability to make seemingly insignificant decisions about fashion “stuff.” In defence of said “stuff,” Miranda proceeds to lecture Andy on the nuances of detail in the fashion world — not least of which is colour. “That sweater is not just blue — it’s not turquoise; it’s not lapis — it’s actually cerulean,” she says. Point taken, Miranda.

RELATED: What’s With All the Recent Shake-Ups in the Fashion Industry?

You see, colour can become synonymous with a brand and establish a visual shorthand that is perhaps even more powerful than a logo. Observe: A bright orange is not simply orange; rather, it’s Hermès orange. A shocking pink is now Pink PP courtesy of Valentino, which elevated an ordinary shade to a trademark hue. With countless colour contributions from the industry trickling into the mainstream, it no longer takes a design aficionado to identify Tiffany Blue or Bottega green. Here, we delve into the cultural significance and fated origins of some of fashion’s favourite colours.

Hermès Orange

designer signature colours

Nothing says orange like a citrus-hued Hermès box, but the iconic boîte wasn’t always this colour. In 1942, during the Second World War, a shortage of cream-coloured cardboard boxes meant that the French fashion house had to use whatever the supplier could provide for packaging. As it turned out, the boxes were orange. Although their size, their shape and even their shade have varied over the years — from a subdued rust orange circa 1945 to a vibrant tangerine reflective of the ’60s — the use of an orange hue has been consistent.

Valentino Pink PP

designer signature colours
Valentino Fall 2022. Photography via Launchmetrics.com/spotlight

Pink is having a major fashion moment — and Valentino’s high-octane Pink PP is leading the pack. You’ll find this shade at the intersection of fuchsia and magenta, but it’s got its own fierce electricity. At Valentino’s Fall 2022 Ready-to-Wear show, 48 single-hued hot-pink ensembles were presented. The collection’s stream of monochromatic looks no doubt contributed to the rise of the Barbiecore trend, with celebrities from Zendaya to Florence Pugh following suit in head-to-toe pink Valentino attire.

This playful shade, made in collaboration with the Pantone Color Institute, was named “Pink PP” after the initials of Valentino’s current creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli. “Pink PP is the result of research and a necessity; I just needed to put all my hopes and dreams and basically everything that makes me feel good into a colour,” Piccioli told British Vogue.

Off-White’s Industrial Yellow

designer signature colours
Off-White Fall 2016. Photography via Launchmetrics.com/spotlight

After the late Virgil Abloh sent a construction-yellow “industrial belt” down the runway at the Off-White Fall 2016 menswear show, it swiftly became a street-style staple. The inspiration for this buzzy belt and its colour is clear from its name — visions of caution tape and construction-site signage come to mind. Off-White is also known for its love of workwear, and this distinctive cautionary-yellow shade has lent itself to a multitude of other creations throughout the years, including logos, clothing and footwear.

Bottega Green

designer signature colours
Bottega Veneta Spring 2021. Photography via Launchmetrics.com/spotlight

One of former creative director Daniel Lee’s greatest contributions to Bottega Veneta (and fashion!) — alongside the coveted Pouch bag and Puddle boots — is Bottega green. For the Italian house’s Spring 2021 Ready-to-Wear show, the set was immersed in both emerald lighting and looks, and thus commenced the reign of the now celebrated colour — although it seems that Lee’s Bottega green itself may be a revival of a longtime favourite of the fashion house. A strikingly similar shade appears in the form of some folded fabric in the 1985 short film Bottega Veneta Industrial Videotape, directed by Andy Warhol — as well as on the exterior of the Bottega Veneta flagship store in Vienna, captured in Polaroid images 10 years later. Coincidence? I think not.

Tiffany Blue

designer signature colours
Fendi Resort 2023. Photography via Launchmetrics.com/spotlight

The precise origin of Tiffany Blue — “a color so famous, it’s trademarked” — and why company founder Charles Lewis Tiffany decided to use it aren’t known for certain, but the historical significance of the colour turquoise in the 19th century might have been a contributing factor. (Tiffany & Co. was created in 1837.)

“Turquoise was a favourite of Victorian brides who gave their attendants a dove-shaped brooch of turquoise as a wedding day memento, which increased the color’s popularity,” offers the luxury jewellery retailer. Beyond using the shade for its boxes, Tiffany & Co. recently collaborated with Fendi for the 25th anniversary of its Baguette bag, made famous on Sex and the City by lead character Carrie Bradshaw. A Tiffany Blue Baguette, modelled on the arm of Bella Hadid, debuted on the catwalk during Fendi’s Resort 2023 show at New York Fashion Week.

Louboutin Red

A sexy stiletto with a rich rouge sole is instantly identifiable as the work of Christian Louboutin. It’s been reported that in 1993, after one year of business, Louboutin sought to create a shoe inspired by Warhol’s 1964 Flowers print series. It’s said he believed that the initial prototype (a pink stacked heel with a black sole) lacked the true pop-art essence of a Warhol piece, but an assistant painting her nails red nearby inspired the designer to paint the sole with her polish to make it pop.

Thus, the famed red bottom was born, and so it has remained — but it’s not without its imitators. Louboutin continues to fight legal battles the world over in an effort to protect its trademark sole, most recently securing a victory in a Beijing court over a competitor.

The beauty industry’s sustainability issues are complex, layered and constantly evolving, but while its gaze is often set on creating a future that is more environmentally responsible (with major strides being made when it comes to things like reusable, recyclable and refillable packaging), brands’ social efforts can be overlooked. Social sustainability involves examining the impact that businesses have on people and communities and consistently working toward improving that impact. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring that fair labour practices and living wages are being met and that community members are given opportunities for employment and economic growth.

Below are four brands that are committed to uplifting communities — both locally and globally — through initiatives that give back.

Cheekbone Beauty

Social sustainability

The vision for Cheekbone Beauty came to founder Jenn Harper in a dream about lipgloss back in 2015. “I saw these Indigenous girls with the rosiest cheeks — they were so happy,” she shares.

What began as a dream (literally) has transformed into so much more. In 2021, Cheekbone Beauty became the first Indigenous-owned brand to be carried at Sephora Canada. The Canadian makeup brand still functions with the well-being of Indigenous youth at its core.

“That dream came at a time when I was seeking to learn why my community constantly struggles,” says Harper. “And when I learned about the residential-school system and the transgenerational trauma it caused, it all started to make sense.”

To date, Cheekbone Beauty has donated over $200,000 to causes that support Indigenous youth (such as the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society and the Shannen’s Dream organization). The company launched the Cheekbone Beauty Scholarship Fund for Indigenous students in 2021 and offered its first recipient $2,500. In 2022, the prize pool expanded to award five recipients $2,500 each.

“I want to show that you can use business as a force for good,” explains Harper. “We aren’t just building a brand that sells lipsticks; the real power of Cheekbone Beauty is that it is creating space for the representation of Indigenous kids and creating awareness about the issue of unequal funding for Indigenous youth.”

Evio

A post shared by EVIO BEAUTY (@eviobeauty)

The inspiration for Canadian brand Evio came at a time when founder Brandi Leifso needed an escape: in 2012, when she was seeking refuge from an abusive relationship at a domestic-violence relief shelter.

She is frequently asked “Why did you stay?” — a question that often carries an undertone of guilt and shame directed at her, the survivor. This biased line of questioning is one thing that motivates Leifso to support other survivors. She says that her personal history allows for a special connection between her brand and the more than 27 shelters and integrated programs across North America that she works with. These programs support survivors and children of domestic violence and work toward breaking the cycle of abuse.

“I have the privilege of being in a really fortunate position now,” says Leifso. “And I’m able to assist while also understanding how we might be able to challenge biases and stigmas from those who haven’t experienced these kinds of circumstances.”

In an inspiring power move, the brand launched its first body-care line — the Body Autonomy collection — earlier this year. For the campaign, the Evio community wrote letters detailing what bodily autonomy means to them. The launch “highlighted that each individual has the right to choose what’s best for them,” shares Leifso.

L’Occitane

Social sustainability

French beauty brand L’Occitane’s 40-year mission to source African shea butter began in the early 1980s, when founder Olivier Baussan flew to Burkina Faso in search of “women’s gold” — the skin-loving butter derived from shea trees. In the four decades since, shea butter has become a key ingredient in the brand’s products. The team of women (whom the brand calls “guardians of the shea trees”) bringing this butter from “tree to skin” has multiplied from around a dozen to over 10,000.

In 2018, Justine Humbert, L’Occitane’s biodiversity and sustainable ingredients manager, was part of the team that founded the brand’s RESIST (Resilience, Ecology, Strengthening, Independence, Structure and Training) program, which strives to improve the economic and climate resilience of its workers through co-operatives with three main goals in mind.

“First, we want to look after the shea trees and ensure they will still be there tomorrow so that the women will be able to earn an income,” says Humbert. “Next, we want to modernize processes with the addition of machinery and motorized equipment, because the traditional method uses a lot of wood and is physically demanding work. And third, we aim to make these women more self-sufficient and less dependent on L’Occitane orders, which is important for a balanced, healthy relationship.” Beyond the program, L’Occitane’s efforts have helped the workers attract new shea butter consumers and take ownership of their production facilities.

Today, L’Occitane is working with five co-operatives in Burkina Faso and Ghana, where the brand purchases locally crafted fair-trade shea butter. “This 40-year partnership shows that economic development, women’s inclusion in the workplace and biodiversity regeneration can be merged to create a path forward,” says Humbert.

Lxmi

Social sustainability

When Anna-Maja Björkenvall took over the role of Lxmi CEO after the passing of founder Leila Janah in 2020, she continued the brand’s existing relationships with women-run co-operatives in Africa and South America. Björkenvall is maintaining Lxmi’s mission to employ and empower women across the globe while creating excellent beauty products.

“We don’t start with a product in mind; we start with an ingredient in mind,” she explains. This was also the way Janah worked. She partnered with fair-trade women’s co-operatives in Northern Uganda to help source what has become the brand’s signature superfood ingredient: nilotica.

Lxmi pays East African women around three times the local living wage for their services sourcing nilotica. As Janah once said in an interview with Fast Company, “We can address poverty while also making our skin better.”

Uninterested in creating skincare products driven by trends, Lxmi focuses instead on perfecting its formulations. “The mission for us is not to crank out products,” explains Björkenvall. “It’s creating mindfully crafted plant-based products.”

Along with nilotica, the brand uses ancient superfood ingredients found in many of nature’s untapped ecosystems, such as the South Suriname-sourced hydrating tuhka Brazil nut oil and antioxidant-rich kigelia extract. “There are amazing ingredients out there and amazing people sourcing them,” she says. “We’re just the vehicle for these stories to come together.”

To ring in its one-year brand anniversary, Rhode is blessing us with the launch of a glossy new skincare innovation. Introducing Glazing Milk, the latest addition to the Rhode lineup and an “essential prep step” in achieving that widely sought after, hydrated, Hailey Bieber glow. Powered by a barrier-boosting trio of nourishing ceramides (the fatty acids found naturally in our skin that make up about half of our skin barrier), this creamy facial essence delivers an instant dose of soft sheen, while a skin-loving blend of magnesium, zinc, and copper in the formula helps to visibly plump up your complexion.

In a virtual Glazing Milk masterclass hosted by Rhode’s Head of Product Development Sarah Jones, a group of Canadian beauty editors and press soaked up all there is to know about this new release. “It’s perfect to use right after your cleanser, when you need to pack some moisture right into your skin and before you go into your next step—serums,” explains Jones. She also advised giving the product a shake before use to activate the tiny microemulsions within the formula and ensure you get a perfect pump of product every time.

Once you’ve patted the essence into your skin, you’re all prepped and ready to proceed with the rest of your skincare routine knowing your skin barrier is thanking you for it. “As Hailey says all the time: ‘A happy barrier is a healthy barrier!'” shared Jones. And our skin couldn’t be happier about bathing in Rhode’s Glazing Milk.

We’ve got big news in the Canadian beauty space! This week, singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk was announced as the official brand ambassador of Back to Earth Skin — a 100 per cent natural Canadian beauty brand with a clean beauty ethos. Known for her powerhouse vocals and philanthropic pursuits, Kreviazuk’s embodiment of the brand’s core beauty, sustainability, and ethical beliefs make her the ideal candidate for this partnership.

In a recent Zoom interview, Kreviazuk tells FASHION she was a fan of Back to Earth Skin before she had even been tapped for this ambassador role, and she had already been using the brand’s products organically in her skincare regimen (her favourite is the moisturizer). “I really liked the products and I loved that it was called Back to Earth,” she says. “I loved everything that I was being educated on, and everything I learned about its origin and the mission and all of our shared values.”

Having front-row access to the inner workings of the Canadian beauty industry, Kreviazuk tells us she feels a strong push forward in the beauty sphere. “I think the thing that’s exciting to me about Canadians in general but also the Canadian value system and [beauty] regulations is that we’re eliminating the bad stuff from our products. We’re protecting our citizens,” she shares.

In this new partnership, we’re excited to witness Kreviazuk continue to use her voice to advocate for the importance of natural beauty, the practice of self-care, and sustainability in the beauty industry. “I just want to make people feel like this is fun and exciting and it works! Get into a regimen of health and beauty and embrace your most organic self.”

Paris Hilton greets guests at her Pride concert with fragrance spritzes

Earlier this week, Paris Hilton kicked off Pride celebrations with her first live concert as a vocalist by having glammed-up Drag Queens Astor Yang, Gemini Dai Sexton, Indigo Dai, Fena Barbitall, Suade and Jonnie Reinhart greet attendees with spritzes of Paris Hilton Fragrances upon their arrival at the show, and then gifting them samples of floral-scented Love Rush and juicy Ruby Rush on their way out. A portion of ticket proceeds from the evening went to GLAAD — a non-profit organization with a focus on LGBTQ advocacy — while Hilton’s media brand 11:11 also contributed to the organization. Now that’s hot.

As beauty trends ebb and flow, we put our beloved brows through a lot.

They’ve endured being overplucked, brushed up for maximum fullness, and bleached to a barely-there state. But our latest obsession is somehow even more extra than the rest. Enter: brow gems.

RELATED: The Beauty Hacks I’ve Learned on TikTok This Month

Consider this brow look (which has appeared everywhere from Peter Do and Chanel runways to Lady Gaga’s Instagram feed) a more editorial extension of “browscaping” — the trend in which brows serve as the foundation for creative expression, making them the focal point of a makeup look. And as far as experimentation goes, an eyebrow chock-full of brow gems surely says something.

Whether you’re preparing for Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour, a Pride party, or you’re still in your Euphoria era, here are four ways to bling out your brows using rhinestones (and perhaps a steady hand).

Fake a bleached brow

@katiefarhood

Not willing to take the bleached brow plunge? Skip the commitment and mimic that bleach-blonde look by using champagne-coloured rhinestones, like these ones you can pick up on Amazon or at your local craft store. First, create a barrier between your real brows and the gemstones by spackling on a thick layer of stick glue. Next, use a coat of your favourite brush-on lash glue to act as an adhesive before you apply the gems on top of your brows. Taking advice from makeup artist Katie Farhood who posted this look on TikTok, fill in any remaining gaps with a brush of fine gold glitter.

Try Renaissance-tour-ready diamanté brows

@charhairchar

It’s an unspoken rule that silver chrome is part of Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour dress code, and this diamanté brow look by TikTok user @charhairchar is sure to elevate your futuristic ensembles. Once you’ve completed your brow routine as usual, @charhairchar recommends using a rhinestone picker to help pick up your gems, so that your placement can be as precise as possible. Grab your silver rhinestones using the tool and apply a light dab of lash glue to the bottom of the gem. Allow the glue to get tacky and then proceed to place each brow gem wherever you’d like. If this look isn’t giving Alien Superstar, we don’t know what is.

Build a new brow

Why go through the hassle of trimming, sculpting, or filling in your precious brows to achieve a new shape when you can simply fake it with gems? On TikTok, professional makeup artist @laramiemakeup began this look with a blocked-out brow base so that a new brow shape can be drawn on. The shape in question? An ultra-thin, blinged-out 90s brow made up of multicoloured rhinestones in varying shapes and sizes.

Add a rainbow tail

This Pride month, upgrade your glam with this rainbow brow tail look posted by TikToker Craig Hamilton. Using a thick concealer (like Tarte’s Shape Tape) and glue to carry out the aforementioned brow-blocking technique, you’ll want to conceal the tail end of your brow so you’ve got a blank canvas to apply your rhinestones. Use a pair of tweezers (or your rhinestone picker!) to help apply your miniature brow gems in a rainbow-coloured sequence and you’re all set.

We can all benefit from the protective properties that sunscreen offers, like helping to prevent sunburns, skin cancer, and premature signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines. The SPF of our beloved sunscreens is an indicator of how well a sunscreen can protect against UVA and UVB rays, and we should be aiming to use products with a minimum SPF of 30.

Here’s the thing: We love sunscreen and all that it does for us, but finding one that blends well with our makeup and doesn’t leave behind a white cast or a greasy finish is no easy feat. It’s true that you should be applying sunscreen daily and all year round, but if you’ve neglected this step during the winter months or haven’t found a sunscreen that works for you, allow us to introduce 14 new SPF-packed products we think you’ll love. From multifunctional creams to dewy serums, there’s a face sunscreen here for everyone.

Another month, another dose of TikTok beauty hacks here to shake up your GRWM game! And if there’s one thing we know about #beautytok, it’s that you never know what bizarre beauty hacks you’ll find yourself putting to the test. Case in point: glueing down your bangs and turning a deodorant bottle into a facial roller, as seen in last month’s beauty hacks column. This month we’re getting into celebrity-approved tips and tricks, plus one hack that’ll make completing a classic hairstyle easier than ever.

RELATED: Shop the Beauty Products Your Fave Celebs Are Using This Summer

From breaking down Hailey Bieber’s makeup artist beloved “underpainting” contour technique to unpacking the surprising shade of blush worn by Victoria’s Secret Angels for their signature sun-kissed beauty look, here are the beauty hacks I’ve learned on TikTok this month.

Sculpt your face with the viral Mary Phillips underpainting technique

If you don’t frequent #beautytok or haven’t seen an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race then you may not have heard of underpainting— but you’ve certainly seen it on your favourite celebs. It’s the secret behind Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber’s chiselled glam look, after all. Recently popularized by their very own MUA Mary Phillips, this technique involves contouring and concealing beneath your foundation — as opposed to the standard practice of completing these steps on top of your complexion base.

In her first TikTok post earlier this year, Phillips can be seen carving out her cheekbones, jawline, and forehead with bronzer followed by a bright layer of concealer and highlighter — all before she goes in with a foundation. “It’s like laying down the bones under the skin. So the contour and the highlight being the bones, and the skin being the foundation,” she says in her post. Wondering when blush comes into play? The MUA revealed in another post that she layers this step over her foundation so that the pigmentation can really come through.

Have sensitive teeth? You can still whiten them with this pain-free solution

Let’s face it — we all want a pearly white smile. But is it worth suffering through the aches and pains that can develop during the whitening process if you have sensitive teeth? We think not. When TikTok mogul Alix Earle shared that her Crest Whitestrips were too painful to wear for their recommended length of time, TikTok user @gilliandelzotto came to the rescue with a quick (and cost-effective!) hack to achieving a whiter, brighter smile without the pain. Using the same whitening strips seen in Earle’s video, Del Zotto explains that cutting the strips in half is the key to alleviating the ache. “Typically our most sensitive teeth is here [at the bottom of our teeth] from just wear and tear, grinding down, eating,” she says. “So if you lay them right on top of your teeth and not curl them under, you’ll have no pain.” In the end, she says, you’ll be left with double the whitening strips and much less pain.

For decades, we marvelled at the bombshell beauty looks that came down the runway at Victoria’s Secret fashion shows — but who would’ve thought that a red blush was behind their natural flush? RMS Beauty founder and makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift took to her brand’s TikTok account to reveal that while working backstage with the Victoria’s Secret Angels, red was her go-to shade of blush. “What the red does is give that little bit of depth to it and it looks more natural,” says Swift in the video. “Almost like the sun kind of gave it a little hint of burn.” And as we’ve entered the month of June, swapping our pink blushes out for red is the beauty trick we didn’t know we needed to try this summer. To achieve the look, grab any cream blush shade with a red tint to liven up your cheeks.

Hack the perfect braid every time

The art of hairstyling is complex as it is, but attempting your own perfectly centred braid that hangs down your back in a proportionate manner is an entirely different beast. As seen in a viral video posted by @audreyvictoria_that racked up 37 million views, our next hack is the answer to all your plait prayers. Begin by sectioning your hair into three parts, and tie the middle section into a ponytail at the centre back of your head. Next, cross the remaining sections of hair overtop your ponytail to hide the hair tie and proceed to braid as usual with all three sections. Lock it in with another hair tie and there you have it — a picture-perfect plait hack that works every single time.

Blend your concealer flawlessly with this unlikely brush

@courtneyhartmakeup

#stitch with @Krystal Marie i learned this technique of blending eyeshaow YEARS ago and i changed the way i did makeup. I was so happy to see this method being used on tiktok. Blending with a fluffy brush is a game changer. @BK Beauty @Saie #makeupblending #concealerblending #concealertutorial #makeupadvice

♬ original sound – Courtney Hart

Using an eyeshadow brush for concealer? Actually groundbreaking! This month, celebrity makeup artist Courtney Hart went viral on TikTok as she detailed her experience assisting other MUAs in the early stages of her career — during which time she witnessed these artists swapping out traditional concealer brushes for eyeshadow brushes to help blend out the under eye area. As demonstrated in her video, this technique begins by dabbing concealer onto the back of your hand before pressing the product into your eyeshadow brush. Next, you’ll use a buffing motion to blend it all out. “This just gives a very different finish than if you were swiping with a concealer brush,” she explains. “It very much gives an airbrush finish to the makeup.” Complete the look by softening the edges with a beauty sponge to give you that seamless final touch.

1970s, ’80s and ’90s kids will recall that there was nothing more electrifying than the novelty of slipping on their mood ring each morning and watching its stone change hues before their very eyes. Today, Gen Z has discovered the wonder of colour-changing products via makeup — an extension of the customization trend that has permeated the beauty industry over the past several years. Colour-changing makeup products (typically lipstick and blush) are pH-activated and powered by a chemical reaction between the product’s ingredients and the wearer’s skin. What could be more customized than that?

RELATED: The Spring 2023 Beauty Trends to Wear Now

“pH is the measure of how acidic an environment is,” explains Alessandro Mendes, vice-president of research and innovation at Cosmetica Laboratories Inc. in Toronto. The level of acidity in anything, from our skin to a swimming pool, can be determined using the scientific scale of pH, which ranges from 0 to 14 (with 0 being the most acidic and 14 being the most basic). Healthy skin naturally stabilizes around the 5 to 5.5 mark.

What causes the colour-changing phenomenon in makeup products is the interaction between skin and an ingredient called bromo acid dye, a type of pigment commonly used in these products. The pH level of the skin that this dye is exposed to upon application determines the shade.

What causes the colour-changing phenomenon in makeup products is the interaction between skin and an ingredient called bromo acid dye.

“When you have a product that looks transparent or translucent in its packaging, for instance, it means that the level of pigment we can see with our eyes is very low,” says Mendes. “The reason we don’t see it until it’s applied is that the pH of the product is higher than the skin’s level of 5.5.” When the two come into contact, the pH levels react to each other, forming a shade that’s unique to the wearer.

Since the pH of everyone’s skin is generally around the same level, getting different hues from person to person relies on a few other factors, too. These include complexion shade, where on the face the product is applied (for example, the pH of the skin on our lips is higher than on the rest of our face) and even how dry or hydrated the skin is. While the differences in the shades and intensity of pH-adapting makeup from person to person may be subtle to the naked eye, as far as unique-to-each-wearer makeup goes, colour-changing products may just be customizable beauty’s final frontier.

Below, discover some of the hottest shade-changing lip products to join in on the fun.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian expands its Aqua fragrance line just in time for summer

In a world where mermaidcore is thriving, Maison Francis Kurkdjian is riding the wave. The beloved fragrance brand is expanding its Aqua fragrance line with the fourth launch within the collection— a fresh, new eau de parfum named Aqua Media Cologne forte. Aptly deriving its name from the Latin word for middle, Aqua Media represents the middle point between light and freshness. Its glimmering bottle is inspired by the shade of green that appears at the centre of a rainbow prism, brought on by a combination of water and sunlight. With key notes of Calabrian bergamot, verbena accord, and woody musks, this fragrance leaves behind a fresh, citrusy aroma fit for summertime.

Sephora Canada invites you to immerse yourself in the world of Sephora Illumination, for one week only

This week in Toronto, local media and beauty influencers gathered to witness the unveiling of Sephora Canada’s new interactive installation: Sephora Illumination, powered by Colour iQ. Designed using over 140,000 shades of Canadian skin tones acquired through the use of Sephora’s Colour iQ technology, the installation aims to showcase the diversity of beauty across the country. Triggered by movement, Sephora Illumination displays thousands of animated skin-toned particles that swirl in mesmerizing formations to deliver a one-of-a-kind visual experience to each observer.

At the unveiling on May 24, beauty brand founders Danessa Myricks of her eponymous label and Basma Hameed of Basma Beauty engaged in an inspiring panel discussion about their paths to breaking into the beauty industry as women of colour. Both women — whose brands are available in Sephora — seek to cater to all skin tones and types in their product portfolios, making them and their work the perfect embodiment of the diversity reflected in the installation.

“The fact that somebody is recognizing that [all of] these skin tones exist is the first really big statement,” Myricks shared with FASHION on the power of the Colour iQ service that fuelled the instillation. “If I think about my journey through beauty and how much easier it would’ve been for me to just walk into a store where somebody could just scan me and tell me all of the things in the building that worked for me — I think that’s genius.”

If you’re in Toronto, you can head to 100 Bloor Street West (right across the street from the Sephora Canada store) between the hours of 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. from now until June 1 to check out the installation for yourself, at no cost. Plus, Sephora Canada advisors will be on-site providing Colour iQ shade matches (which are also available in Sephora stores) to all visitors. Run, don’t walk!

Saie Beauty Glow Sculpt is here

Combining everything we love about blush and highlighter into one conveniently refillable compact, Saie Beauty just dropped Glow Sculpt. Within this product, colourful bursts of blush meet smooth micro-pearl particles to deliver a weightless glow that has just the right amount of pigment. Available in five shades, you can play with colours across the spectrum from cool pinks to rich bronze shades in the same areas you’d apply your blush or highlight. Accompanying this launch is a brand-new dual-ended makeup brush called The Double Brush, which goes hand-in-hand with your new Glow Sculpt.

Glow Recipe launches a plumping lip gloss balm

Why choose between lip gloss and lip balm when you can have both? Glow Recipe’s latest Plum Plump Hyaluronic Gloss Balm is the best of both worlds. This lip-loving formula is formulated with antioxidant-rich ingredients like vitamin C packed kakadu plum, hydration hero hyaluronic acid, and soothing raspberry. Whether you use it as lip prep, a lip treatment, or on top of your favourite liner, this product will keep your lips juicy and glossy all day long.

Canadian beauty brand The Cure Skincare has an enticing product lineup full of clean, vegan, and genderless skincare made out east in Nova Scotia, and they’ve just added their first-ever face and eye cream to the collection. Grown Alchemist revamps an original formula

Since Grown Alchemist sought out to rework their original Detox Serum formula, the final outcome is a stronger, creamier new serum named the Skin Renewal Serum. Hydration levels and reparative benefits have been amped up thanks to hyaluronic acid and peptides, as well as five more active ingredients than the OG formula. A supercharging treat for our skin, this serum is clinically proven to strengthen the skin barrier by up to 27 per cent in just 12 hours, and 36 per cent in a month of use. We’re liking the sound of those numbers.

Cardea AuSet drops a floral face mask fit for spring

Coming from a brand already known for its plant-based products, this face mask is a seamless addition to the collection. And what would a plant-powered face mask named Bloom be without a little rose oil? This star ingredient keeps the skin barrier nourished and looking radiant as a fresh flower.

To bang, or not to bang — that is always the question.

Bangs often get a bad rap. It’s easy to get scissor-happy and snip away at our fringe until it winds up too short…or in a regrettable bowl cut. You either love ’em or hate ’em, but there’s no denying a solid set of bangs when you spot them.

RELATED: Dyson Debuts the Airstrait, a Revolutionary Wet-to-dry Hair Straightener

This summer, when it comes to bangs our vote is a resounding yes — and it appears that celebrities on the 2023 Cannes Film Festival red carpet, from Dua Lipa to Blackpink’s Rosé, are in agreement. At the star-studded two-week-long event, we’ve witnessed plenty of things worth mentioning: the return of exposed bras, Jennifer Lawrence in flip-flops, Elle Fanning in her slay era — and bangs. Lots and lots of bangs, of all kinds.

From chic micro-bangs to full-on fringes, we present to you the best bang hairstyles worn by your favourite stars at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Dua Lipa

For her Cannes debut, Dua Lipa walked the red carpet with jet-black, piece-y bangs that swept over her eyes and down all the way to her jawline. Stylist to the stars Rio Sreedharan sculpted Lipa’s cool-girl fringe as part of a deliberately undone French twist updo. When in Cannes, ’do as the French ’do, non?

Naomi Campbell

Naomi Campbell has never been one to shy away from a bang, and we’re grateful for it. This supermodel brought her signature black bangs to Cannes, and they were as blunt as ever, falling just beneath her eyebrows. The stylist responsible? Lorenzo Barcella, who often collaborates with Naomi to craft long lengths and avant-garde haircuts for major editorial moments.

Rosé

To mark her first time at the Cannes film festival, Blackpink’s Rosé unveiled a cutesy set of rose gold (ha!) tinted micro-bangs. In an Instagram post by the K-pop star, we get a behind-the-scenes look at hairstylist Lee Seon-Yeong at work during the application process of what appears to be a clip-in bang — which is the perfect alternative to taking the plunge and snipping away at your natural hair.

Sabrina Elba

A post shared by @jdebruynemakeup

Opting for a full-on and fanned-out fringe, Sabrina Elba wowed us with this bold look. Also styled by the aforementioned Sreedharan — whose expertise is clearly a hot commodity in Cannes — we loved the way Elba’s brow-grazing bangs transitioned into an elaborately crafted spiked-out bun. Sophisticated bangs in the front, party in the back.

Nadia Lee Cohen

Creative visionary Nadia Lee Cohen stepped out with a fiery fringe peeking through the hood of her slinky Saint Laurent gown. Behind the style, Gonn Kinoshita worked to shape Cohen’s copper hair into a baby bang and a face-framing curl. “76th Cannes but my first!” writes Cohen in another Instagram post. With hair this good, we’re sure it won’t be her last.

Gemma Chan

This year at Cannes, international L’Oréal Paris hair artist and expert Stephane Lancien had a case of bang fever. His bang-wearing Cannes clientele included Aja Naomi King, Luma Grothe, and Gemma Chan. Chan was a ray of light on the red carpet in a white full-length Louis Vuitton gown that juxtaposed her choppy, forehead-covering bangs (which were also clip-ins!).

Grace Elizabeth

With a tousled set of curly black bangs, former Victoria’s Secret model Grace Elizabeth was a vision of Old Hollywood beauty. For this hairstyle carried out by global hair artist Aleksandra Sasha Nesterchuk, the top model’s pixie cut was transformed by plucking out pieces at the front of the head and creating individual C-shaped curls. Forget Barbie, this look was giving Betty Boop.

With Sofia Richie Grainge’s wedding kicking things off and a slew of bride-coded looks coming out of the Met Gala earlier this month, we’re officially declaring bridal season in full swing!

From the moment a bride-to-be first slips on an engagement ring, there’s much work to be done. This article was originally published on April 12, 2023 and has been updated.

Of all the things that Succession‘s Roy family does best — plotting, scheming, arguing, and being the absolute worst in the very best way — this fictional empire is particularly ace at displaying their wealth through acts of quiet luxury dressing. But a closer look at the beauty products they use proves that the concept of stealth wealth is not exclusive to their fashions.

RELATED: How to Achieve the Quiet Luxury Look On a Budget

In a recent scroll through TikTok, I stumbled upon a video from the @classofpalmbeach account where stylish subjects and socialites in the area are interviewed about their outfits. In the comments, one user writes, “It’s always fascinating to me how obvious it is when someone is rich… the glow lol.” Although the video was full of high-end fashion labels and stylistic details, what truly seemed to signify wealth to this commenter was the rich “glow” radiating through the screen.

It’s a luxury in and of itself to be unconcerned with common struggles like acne or split ends. For an affluent family like the Roys, thousand-dollar procedures and high-end skincare regimens will do all the work, so they can simply spend the dosh and be done with it. Skin that requires minimal makeup is the ultimate luxury, after all. There is no flashy symbol that suggests you’re wearing a $400 face cream, or a blaring signal that shows your hair has been styled with a product formulated by a celebrity stylist, yet there they are. There is only the rich glow.

To determine what it is that gives the Roys such an air of stealth wealth as it pertains to beauty, we’ve done a little sleuthing. We’ve observed and tracked down some of the high-end beauty products that appear in the background throughout the series.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Succession (@succession)

Toward the end of the first episode of season 3, we find baby brother Roman (Kieran Culkin) pacing in a private airplane bathroom as he pleads for power over the phone with his father Logan (Brian Cox).  In the background, a treasure trove of luxury beauty products is stocked on the shelves. First, there’s a bottle of salon-worthy and widely coveted Olaplex — which we’ve deduced is likely the brand’s No. 6 Bond Smoother hair styling treatment (thanks to the signature copper stripe across the bottle). On the same shelf, we see what appears to be a green product box of Origins skincare — potentially from its Mega-Mushroom skincare made in collaboration with celebrity Dr. Andrew Weil, and formulated with traditional plants, mushrooms, and herbs to optimize skin health and reduce stress (which is much needed in this family).

A couple of clips later, the celebrity product sightings continue when a lineup of Ouai hair products (A-list hairstylist Jen Atkin’s line) comes into view. A trio of the brand’s Detox Shampoo, and what we presume to be their leave-in conditioner treatment and super dry shampoo are neatly arranged on the shelf, in such plain sight that Atkin herself pointed out the feature on her Instagram story writing, “I am dead!!!! I love this show so much!” The mere implication that there is even an option to shower and wash your hair on the plane — much less with a high-end collection of beauty products lining the shelves of the plane bathroom — is a subtle brag about wealth, and a luxury few can afford. So what if the flight is hardly long enough for a full hair and skin routine? The point isn’t whether or not they use them, just that they’re there.

A post shared by Succession (@succession)

Later on that season, in episode 3, we catch a glimpse of Kendall’s (Jeremy Strong) bathroom sink, where a casual $385 skincare product rests, proving one of two things. Number one: though Kendall may undergo periods of feeling like his life is in shambles (when he’s not on a power trip), there is always the option of ensuring that at the very least, he can keep his skin in check. Or two: that he can afford to disregard a $385 cream when his life is in said shambles. The product in question? Augustinus Bader’s aptly titled The Rich Cream or its lighter companion The Cream — but knowing Kendall, he likely opted for the former, solely because of its name. Either way, this product will run you almost four hundred dollars. In return you get its patented TFC8 (Trigger Factor Complex) technology which nourishes skin while supporting cellular renewal.

Loved by Hollywood’s elite (Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Aniston, Margot Robbie, etc), Augustinus Bader is the German label that oozes quiet luxury. It’s something of an “if you know, you know” brand — instantly identifiable by its cobalt blue and copper-bodied packaging, but only if you’re a skincare aficionado. Or part of the upper echelon who actually uses it. What’s more, the meeting that led to the success of this eponymous brand reportedly took place at a billionaire’s dinner party where Bader met a Paris-based investor named Charles Rosier, who would become co-founder of the brand. And we wouldn’t assume that Kendall would use anything less than a product founded by a fellow member of a billionaire’s circle.

A post shared by Succession (@succession)

As for billionaire scion and Roy sister Shiv (Sarah Snook), there’s been a recent uptick in the internet’s interest in her beauty routine. One writer surmised that she’d have to be a “Dr. Barabara Sturm girl”. In a viral Into The Gloss post where each character was compared to a beauty product, Shiv was assigned Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion. But alas, during season 4’s premiere episode, we’re placed in Shiv and Tom’s shared pre-divorce bedroom where an unmistakable tub of Tatcha’s $91 Dewy Skin Cream moisturizer is in clear view atop her dresser. As it turns out, Tatcha’s Japanese-inspired skincare line is Shiv’s brand of choice. This puts her in a class with real-life billionaire Kim Kardashian and former royalty Meghan Markle, who have been said to use these products. We think Shiv is a fitting addition to this crew. On the same dresser, a small silver tube sealed by a black lid that could possibly be a L’Occitane hand cream lies. Understated, yet still expensive, making it a suitable candidate for quiet luxury beauty.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Succession (@succession)

In the penultimate episode of season four, the skincare saga continues. At the beginning of the episode, we see Roman reaching for a white tub of moisturizer. “A little dry,” he says before applying the cream. As Succession has the tendency to do, this lone moisturizer sparked a debate about what specific product he used. Beauty writer Kirbie Johnson and Dieux Skin co-founder Charlotte Palermino both took to Instagram with an initial hunch that it could be a La Mer moisturizer (likely The Soft Cream) because of the shape and material of the tub, the texture of the cream, and even the sound of the lid hitting the countertop. However, after posting her video, a follower who apparently worked on the set of the show DM’ed Palermino to inform her that it was in fact a Kiehl’s moisturizer (possibly The Ultra Facial Cream) used in the scene. Still, Johnson and a slew of Succession fans in the comments of each video remain skeptical. On one hand — like Palermino initially speculated — we’d probably expect Roman to use La Mer because of his “affinity for a certain demographic of women who tend to use La Mer” and because, well, it’s super expensive. On the other hand, if he’s this aware of his skin dryness, then Kiehl’s would be a solid fit. Either way, it’d make sense.

Is it a coincidence that some of these items are left in full view? Absolutely not. It all lends itself to the show’s obsession with stealth wealth. If you blink, you might miss it. But it’s there nonetheless. To shop the Roy beauty regimen, flip through the gallery below.

Situated in Antibes along the coastline of the French Riviera, Dior has unveiled a dreamy new destination spa inside the iconic Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc. A recent hotspot, you may also recognize this historic hotel as the site of the lavish Sofia Richie Grainge wedding that took place last month (we’re still not over it!). Nestled beneath Aleppo pine trees in the Cap-Eden-Roc gardens, there is a lush selection of sensorial experiences available at this Dior spa where treatment rooms overlook a century-old rose garden once dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II. A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce)

Attention Beyhive, this is not a drill! This week, Queen Bey took to Instagram to drop an exciting teaser that is bound to shake up the beauty industry. The first slide of her post shows Beyoncé curling her hair in glam, and the second is a throwback shot of young Bey in a salon chair with a fresh set of braids. “How many of y’all knew my first job was sweeping hair in my Mama’s salon?” reads a digital note in the third slide of her post. Bey further explains that her former band, Destiny’s Child, first got its start performing for clients while they got their hair done. It was in the salon, she shares, where she was exposed to entrepreneurial women of all sorts and witnessed the impact that nurturing and celebrating our hair can have on our souls. “Having learned so much on my hair journey, I’ve always dreamed of carrying on her legacy. I can’t wait for you to experience what I’ve created,” she writes and signs off with a heart and a capital ‘B.’ Haircare? Wigs? Hair tools? Whatever it is, we’re ready for it. And if her current blonde mane moments on her Renaissance world tour are any indication — we’re already sold.

Conveniently created in three different textures with all skin types in mind, you can choose from the fragrance-free, light or rich formula options to add to your skincare routine. For a double dose of hydration, layer the OG serum (which is still available!) with the new cream and thank us later.

Nothing makes a makeup statement quite like a bold lip — and Beautycounter just dropped a collection full of lipsticks that’ll do just that. Developed in collaboration with celebrity makeup artist Christy Coleman, the newly launched Statement Maker Satin Lipsticks come in 14 highly pigmented shades from subdued nudes to vibrant hues sure to make their mark. Each lipstick is formulated with nourishing açai oils, shea, mango butter and plant-based waxes that leave lips as soft as they are pigmented. Housed in post-consumer recycled packaging, this angled lipstick tube also doubles as a lip liner when flipped over.

Founded by Elizabeth Shabi, a certified medical aesthetician and former senior chemist, Serumize is a beauty brand that truly understands the inner workings of skincare. Aiming to bridge the gap between prescribed skincare treatments and daily skincare products, this Canadian label offers up formulas that go skin-deep to target skincare concerns — so you get the best results. And the proof is in its latest launches. While the Clear Fight Oil-free Moisturizer is a remedy for acne-prone skin that unclogs pores while leaving skin hydrated, the Peptide Quench Hydrating Moisturizer harnesses the power of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and aloe to combat super dry skin. What’s more, another addition to the Clear Fight line comes by way of a daily foaming cleanser that removes pore-clogging debris and makeup dubbed the Clear Fight Clarifying Facial Cleanser. Talk about spoiled for choice!

Where do we go when we need a little beauty advice or inspiration these days? TikTok, of course! And when it comes to helpful beauty hacks, the app always delivers. Last month we unpacked curling lashes upside down (kind of) and using sunscreen to contour, but this time around we’re getting into hacking a blowout overnight, DIYing your own skincare tools and more.

Below, find five tips and tricks that have been approved by #beautytok to try out this month.

Hold your bangs in place with a little lash glue

@darekelly

i kept forgetting and accidentally tugging at it but perfect hack for windy sf weather #bangs #lashgluebangs #bangshack #hairhack

♬ girls like me don’t cry (sped up) – thuy

Bangs are all fun and games until the wind blows. With a single gust, your carefully cropped bangs are giving full access to your bare forehead. Maybe you should try gluing your fringe down. Hear us out. In a viral video posted by @darekelly, she makes a convincing case for this hack. All you’ll need is lash glue, which you likely already have stored in your makeup bag. Again, that’s lash glue! Any other types of glue can irritate your skin should be avoided. Begin by using a few dots of glue along the brow bone (or wherever your bangs end) and press your strands into place. This ensures everything is evenly fanned out across your forehead. And just like that, your bangs are wind-proof! But don’t just take our word for it, users in the comment section of this tutorial speculate that this trick is how K-Pop star Lisa of Blackpink keeps her signature blunt fringe intact on stage, through killer choreography and all.

Combat oily skin with a foundation and powder concoction

@vincent.ford

This powder hack works well to control oil if you have oily skin I used Laura Mercier Translucent Powder in Honey and Fenty Pro Filt’r Hydrating Foundation #oilyskin #makeuphack #matteskin #fyp

Got oily skin? London-based makeup artist Vincent Ford posted this powder trick that’ll help combat an oily-looking base in just a few foolproof steps. Just mix a loose face powder of your choice with your favourite liquid foundation and blend with your hands before applying it to your face with your fingertips. The result? A more mattified face with a blurred finish that’ll help to control oil all day long.

DIY a facial roller with a deodorant bottle…?

We love us a good skincare tool, but we don’t always love the price tag. That said, allow us to introduce our next hack: a DIY facial roller made with something you probably already keep in your medicine cabinet. In a TikTok with a whopping 35 million views, @rose.friederike uses an empty rollerball deodorant to DIY a facial roller. First, she pries the ball out with a small pair of nail scissors and soaks both the bottle and the ball in soapy water to clean it out (we suggest doing a super thorough cleanse to ensure no harsh ingredients have been left behind). Next, she grabs her product of choice — which is aloe vera — and squeezes it into the bottle before popping the ball back in. To complete her creation, she adds a personalized “face mask & chill” sticker to the bottle for a fun touch.

Hack a curly blowout overnight

@itsamandaguido

Tutorial of how I achieved heatless overnight curls on my smoothed-out, curly hair using flexing rods and socks & poor joe has seen some crazy things when I go to bed lol he said: “at-least tell me the socks were clean” LOL #heatlesscurls

♬ Area Codes (Sped Up Version) – Kali & sped up nightcore

Hair that sets in your sleep? Yes, please! If you’ve still got a set of flexi-rod rollers knocking around from way back when, you may want to bring them back into your hair tool rotation for this heatless curl hack. A recent TikTok posted by Canadian curly girl Amanda Guido walks us through how to use flexi-rods to achieve voluminous, blown-out looking curls overnight. Starting off with smoothed-out hair, apply oil to the ends of your strands before you wrap them up for the night. Next, stuff a handful of flexirods into a clean sock to act as your first ‘curler’. Make a C-shaped part at the top of your head and roll your sock tool from the ends of your hair up until you meet the scalp. Then, lock your sock curler in place by bending the flexi-rod. Repeat these steps all around your head in medium-sized sections — and be sure to tuck your hair up into a satin bonnet before bed so you can sleep sweetly and dream about the gorgeous curls you’re about to wake up to.

Match your foundation perfectly every time with this trick

@nikkiajoy

How to match your foundation the RIGHT way!!👏🏼 I hope this makeup tip helps🥺 #makeup #beauty #makeupartist #makeuptips #foundationhack #foundationmatch

♬ Funny Song – Cavendish Music

Whether we’re adapting to a darker skin tone in the summer, a lighter shade in the winter, or simply trying to decide which undertone is the right one, it can be a struggle to find the perfect shade of foundation. You may have tried swatching on the back of your hand or directly on your face in-store, only to return home and discover it’s not a match. Turns out we may have been doing it wrong all along. Beauty guru Nikkia Joy took to TikTok to teach us how to find our best match. “What you want to do instead is match your foundation to the exposed skin on your neck and chest,” says Joy. Start with one swatch on the neck, and blend it out to see if it matches. Though it may not be the same shade as your face, the point is to ensure that your makeup seamlessly blends into your neck and chest so it looks most natural. One more pro tip from Joy? Let your swatch dry down to see its true colour before you make your decision, as some foundations have a tendency to oxidize.

With the arrival of Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, we’ve been once again swept up into a Bridgerton fantasyone in which the tale of Queen Charlotte’s ascension to the throne is accompanied by all the enchanting elements of pomp, pageantry, and risqué romance that we love about the original series. Only this time, the Queen and her natural hair help to propel the story in a way we hadn’t yet experienced in a period drama before.

This prequel winds back the clock and introduces us to a young Queen Charlotte (portrayed by India Amarteifio) and King George III (played by Corey Mylchreest), as the origin of their romance unfolds in six binge-worthy episodes. If you’ve seen any of the Bridgerton episodes, then you’re already acquainted with the gossip-loving Queen Charlotte and her sky-high wigs intricately interwoven with diamonds, pearls, and of course, crowns. Though when we first meet young Charlotte in episode one of the new series, she is not yet a Queen.

Set to marry the King, she arrives in England in the first episode with her natural curls pulled up into an updo, still visible beneath a blue satin headpiece. This textured updo remains for the majority of the episode — that is until her first run-in with her future husband George — who she is actively trying to escape at the time of their meeting — moments ahead of their wedding. Following a surprisingly warm first encounter in which the King leaves the decision to wed entirely in Charlotte’s hands (after having seen her attempt to climb a literal *wall* to escape her marital duty), the soon-to-be Queen is left with a newfound sense of agency. In one of her first power moves of the show, she abandons her former updo and arrives at the wedding ceremony with a perfectly picked out afro and defined curls around the perimeter of her face topped with a flower ornamented tiara. With that, she weds the King on her own terms — natural hair on full display.

The first season of Bridgerton, where Queen Charlotte rules over the ton at a much older age, is set in 1813 London. So we can surmise that Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story takes place during the latter half of the 1700s. Typically, when we think of other period piece dramas set around the same English Regency era, we envision women like Keira Knightley in Pride and Prejudice with elegant coiffures and Marie Antoinette-esque bouffants accompanied by forced curls. Bridgerton is known for its diversity and inclusion, and this limited series is no exception. Much like many of the characters of colour in the Bridgerverse, Queen Charlotte and her naturally textured tresses are a welcome anomaly in this genre. The decision to embrace her curls is not only a major statement about Black women and their hair in film, but it also helps us to understand the type of character Queen Charlotte will become. “We wanted to show the afro and its beauty,” says hair and makeup head of the new series Nic Collins in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “That was important. It’s her decision, it’s her choice. It’s like she’s just let her hair down and it sits in its glory.”

Despite Amarteifio (who has blown us away with her recent press tour hairstyles) having a full head of beautifully defined coils, it may surprise you to learn that every single hairstyle Queen Charlotte wears is a wig. Why then, would a show with such an adamant focus on embracing natural hair, not embrace its leading lady’s natural curls? As a curly girl myself, I take this as a sign of a hair team that is well-versed in the workings of textured hair — one that understands our hair is delicate and more prone to breakage. They are aware of the fact that our curls may not necessarily be able to withstand rigorous daily styling in the ways other hair types can. “If it’s not their natural hair, all characters are wearing wigs because we wanted to be cautious and not damage the lead’s natural hair,” Collins tells the Los Angeles Times. The use of wigs runs deeper than mere on-screen representation — is a careful consideration of the actors’ hair in real life, which is just as crucial.

As the show rolls on, we’re offered up a spectacular array of elaborate hairstyles that evolve as Queen Charlotte does. We observe her hair wrapped up before bed (as we natural-haired folks do), in ornate updos, and worn in an abundance of afros adorned with jewels and crowns that capture the regal essence of the show. Collins tells Netflix that the hair stylists used a collection of unorthodox tools like thin skewers and wire cages within the wigs to help create shape and convey various textures — because some of us can only dream of achieving hair that big and bodacious.

In the final episode, young Charlotte’s ‘fro is fuller than ever, and she is ready to reign as the mature monarch we all know her to be. Closing out the series having embraced all her kinks and coils, Queen Charlotte reminds us all that wearing a head full of curls is a crown in and of itself.
