No one’s doing Barbiecore better than Margot Robbie this summer. As the Australian actress travels the globe to promote her titular role in the highly-anticipated live-action Barbie movie, her style has been heavily inspired by the iconic Mattel doll’s fashion sense, with every outfit looking like it was perfectly plucked out of Barbie Land.

And, between the seemingly endless brand collaborations, elaborate press events and unique experiential marketing tactics (we’re looking at you, Barbie Dreamhouse Airbnb) promoting the film, it only makes sense that Robbie would lean into this one-of-a-kind character’s style.

Robbie is trying her hand at method dressing — which, for some actors, is the process of dressing in the aesthetic of the character they play or movie they’re in — and her style is clearly deliberate, detail-oriented and, of course, extremely pink. These outfit choices are helping to blur the lines between where Robbie ends and Barbie begins, making her appear as one and the same with the classic character and further solidifying her status as one of the biggest movie stars of our time.

At the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles on July 9, Robbie wore perhaps her most literal Barbie look yet, solidifying that she is now and forever in her Barbie era. The actor transformed into 1960s Barbie for the pink carpet premiere, rocking a custom black sequinned Schiaparelli couture gown with matching opera gloves.

And last week, Robbie was on a whirlwind Barbie-dressing streak that was nearly impossible to keep track of. There was her very ’90s “Totally Hair: 25th Anniversary” Barbie doll reference on July 7 (complete with crimped hair and groovy printed minidress, not to mention an epic vintage Versace moment a few days earlier and the below 1984 “Day to Night” Barbie look capture by Robbie’s hairstylist Bryce Scarlett.

On Australia’s Bondi Beach on June 29, Robbie wore another Barbie ensemble that appeared to have been borrowed directly from the iconic doll. Although the outfit, surprisingly, didn’t feature any pink, Robbie wore a custom black and white striped Hervé Léger mini-dress, Barbie’s classic white-rimmed vintage sunglasses and black Manolo Blahnik heeled mules as a nod to the first-ever Barbie doll which was released in 1959.

The look, which was initially shared by Robbie’s stylist, Andrew Mukamal, on Instagram, is strikingly similar to the doll without it being an exact replica. The 1959 outfit consisted of a black and white strapless leotard while Robbie went for a more modern adaptation with a mini as she paid tribute to the ensemble. The references didn’t just stop at the clothes and accessories, though, as Robbie also sported a high, retro-inspired ponytail, which looks strikingly similar to the hairstyle the original doll wears.

Robbie even remained on-theme as she touched down in Australia earlier this week. As she walked through the airport, the star wore a vintage pink Chanel blazer while carrying the chicest matching light-pink luggage set that we could totally imagine Barbie using to travel the world.

She exemplified her commitment to emulating Barbie’s iconic style once again when she attended a press stop for the film in Los Angeles last weekend. As she channelled her inner doll, Robbie sported two all-pink looks during the trip that were almost too on-point.

The first consisted of a light pink, two-piece bustier and pleated miniskirt Bottega Veneta set and coordinating Manolo Blahnik peep-toe heels. In photos that her stylist once again shared on Instagram, Robbie truly couldn’t have looked any more Barbie-like as she enthusiastically posed in front of a perfectly matching pink convertible with a matching handbag and the iconic white sunglasses, of course.

While attending a press event in Beverly Hills the next day, Barbie once again came to life through Robbie as the actress wore a pink polka-dot halter Valentino mini-dress with a yellow shoulder bag and white Manolo Blahnik pumps. We’d be remiss if we didn’t note that we’re sensing a theme with the star’s favoured-footwear choice — who knew Barbie was such a Manolo fan? If their universes were to ever collide, we’re sure Carrie Bradshaw and Barbie would become besties over this shared obsession alone.

Robbie’s commitment to method dressing for the role isn’t new either. Back in April at CinemaCon 2023 for one of the film’s first promotional stops, Robbie sported a pink and white gingham two-piece Prada ensemble that was reminiscent of two dresses Barbie wears in one of the movie’s first trailers.

Some of Robbie’s co-stars have also received the method-dressing memo and are leaning into their character’s fashion senses as well.

Ryan Gosling, who plays one of the many Kens in the film, already went viral for his CinemaCon 2023 look that consisted of a pink sweater and a white T-shirt with “From Director Greta Gerwig” written across the front in Barbie font. And the Canadian movie star mostly recently channelled his real-life Kenergy last night in Toronto.

At the Canadian press event, Gosling sported a head-to-toe Gucci look consisting of a pastel blue suit with a pink shirt. Simu Liu, who plays a fellow Ken in the movie, also attended the press stop and showed off his Barbie-inspired look with a striped pink shirt under a retro green leather jacket and brown trousers.

In just the past few months, this cast, and particularly Robbie, have proven just how creative they can be as they dive deeper into the method dressing opportunities this film presents. And why shouldn’t they? There’s perhaps no other franchise that is as fun, carefree and colourful as Barbie, and it’s great to see the stars taking full advantage of all the fashionable, once-in-a-career outfit choices they have. After all, it’s Barbie’s World, we’re just living in it.

There’s perhaps no other movie star these days who takes as many style risks as Florence Pugh. The British actress has quite the track record when it comes to her daring fashion choices and Florence Pugh added to that list once again with another free the nipple moment.

RELATED: Florence Pugh Is the Queen of Hair Transformations

While attending the Valentino Fall 2023 Couture show on July 5, Pugh went braless in a sheer, lilac gown that featured layers of draped fabric, a plunging neckline and a ruffled collar. She looked both edgy and delicate as the dress’ shocking transparency and revealing backless silhouette directly contrasted with its light material and flowy train — a uniquely audacious combination that the Little Women star has worn on several occasions.

She also debuted a fresh take on her buzzcut, which she first sported at this year’s Met Gala, as she turned heads with a new bright pink colour. The movie starlet allowed her tulle Valentino gown and the vibrant shade of her latest hairstyle to shine by pairing the outfit with a classic glam makeup look, minimalistic diamond earrings and her iconic septum ring.

Between her new ‘do and the shockingly sheer dress, fashion fans quickly took to social media as they shared Pugh’s latest couture look. And, while some championed her expressive style choices, others weren’t the biggest fans of the unique look. But after last year’s controversy, this shouldn’t be a surprise.

In case you don’t remember, during last year’s couture fashion week in Rome, the actress generated a ton of controversy online as she arrived at the Valentino Fall 2022 Couture show wearing a sheer, pink gown, with her nipples fully visible.  At the time, Florence Pugh addressed the nipple controversy on her Instagram by saying, “Listen, I knew when I wore that incredible Valentino dress that there was no way there wouldn’t be a commentary on it. Whether it be negative or positive, we all knew what we were doing. I was excited to wear it, not a wink of me was nervous. I wasn’t before, during or even now after.”

After a lengthy caption in which she called out body-shamers and double standards, she ended the post by sharing a photo of her covering her nipples with her fingers and completed her caption with, “Oh! The last slide is for those who feel more comfortable with that inch of darker skin to be covered… #fuckingfreethefuckingnipple”

Pugh followed up the controversial pink Valentino dress a few months later with a different see-through, nipple-freeing look in October 2022. In another head-to-toe Valentino look, Pugh sported a sheer, sequin-detailed crop top and maxi skirt set as she attended Spring 2023 Paris fashion week — which also caught a lot of media attention.

Back in September 2022, Pugh seemingly made a different kind of statement through her audacious outfit choice at the premiere of Olivia Wilde’s film Don’t Worry Darling, in which she starred opposite Harry Styles and, allegedly, endured a ton of backstage drama while making the movie. As she attended the red carpet in none other than a Valentino Fall 2022 couture glittery, sheer dress with feathery heels and a classic old-Hollywood-esque glamour beauty look, some onlookers suspected that the actress’ bold style choice was sending a message of defiance in response to how she’d been treated surrounding the release of the film. And, while she and her cast-mates outfits each had their own individual style, Pugh’s look did not complement any of her co-stars’, making the few group shots from the event look chaotic and out-of-sync.

Yet, Pugh did drop some hints that this may have been her intention with wearing the daring look all along. When asked what she found inspiring about working on the film during the premiere, she seemingly confirmed suspicions of behind-the-scenes drama as she said, “I think it’s very very inspiring to see a woman push back and say ‘no,’ and question everything. It’s very exciting to see a woman do that on and off camera.” Knowing the details of the drama surrounding the film, that defiant attitude certainly came through in her outfit choice for the Hollywood occasion.

From her most-talked-about looks of just the past few years, the actor has certainly proved that she’s consistently one to watch both on and off the red carpet. While she’s proven to be loyal to Valentino for her outfits, the question remains: what will she wear next? Perhaps Florence Pugh will wear more free the nipple-inspired looks as she gears up to promote her role in the second instalment of the highly-anticipated Dune series? Only time will tell what Pugh’s next major fashion move will be, but we’ll surely be keeping an eye on her ever-evolving style.

Whether he was ditching high school dance rehearsals to help out the costume department or convincing his kindergarten class to put on a fashion show, it’s clear that Farhan Haque was always destined to work in fashion. But it wasn’t until the end of high school that he committed to a career in fashion design.

RELATED: This Canadian Designer Will Always Love Oversized Collars

“It was always a matter of theatre production or fashion,” says Haque of his early career aspirations. “I think I [didn’t realize] the fact that I like to make theatrical clothes doesn’t necessarily mean [they’d have to be for a] character. Instead, I could create life costumes.”

And that’s exactly what he’s done.

Today, the 2021 graduate of Toronto Film School’s fashion design program is the creative director of his self-made brand, Mr. Haque, which is named after his outgoing, confident and eccentric alter-ego. The expressive persona of “Mr. Haque” translates into his custom creations too, which is apparent through the unique, structural designs that stars like Priyanka, Mia Martina and former FASHION cover star Jordan Alexander have worn.

With just two official collections under his belt, the 23-year-old Toronto designer has already amassed a dedicated following within the city’s fashion scene — most recently dressing Veruschka for FASHION’s 2023 Cake Mix party — and he’s only getting started.

FASHION spoke to Haque about where he draws inspiration, designing for drag queens and how he sees his brand developing.

Was there a defining moment that helped you decide to commit to fashion design?

“At the very last minute in high school, four of my friends didn’t have prom gowns. And I’d never made a gown like that — I had made costumes, but not a gown. So I made the first gown literally overnight, out of excitement. Then I did the second one on the second night and within four days, these four gowns were all ready for prom. That’s when I was like, ‘Oh OK, fashion is the way.’

@itsmrhaque 🖤 #fashion #fashiondesigner #runwayvsreallife #runway #model #wakandaforever #wakandaforeverpremiere #gossipgirl ♬ original sound – B

Where do you find inspiration?

“For someone in the public eye, usually their stylist comes to me with a mood board and that’s when I’ll sketch out an idea so we can visualize it together. If it’s my personal pieces, a lot of inspiration comes from music. I’ll listen to music and imagine the designs walking down the runway or how they would look dancing. Both of the finale looks at each of my last shows have been set to dramatic soundtracks and both designs came from the movement of that music.”

How does that musical influence translate to the designs themselves?

“You’ll see a lot of draping because it works well for movement. But, I also love tight, tight, tight corsets. I always like to play with the opposing sides, like one dress will be super flowy and then the one that comes right after is super structured. It depends on the kind of song I was listening to at the moment.”

You’ve done a lot of work with drag queens. How is designing for a queen different from your other work?

“There’s the aspect of trying to feminize the body. So, for example, I’ll have to ask them questions like, ‘Will you have butt pads on? Will you be wearing a bra?’ because that’s something to consider when taking the measurements. It’s such a unique art form.”

A post shared by Mr.Haque (@itsmrhaque)

Do you remember the first time you designed a look for a drag queen?

“I had a queen in my first show, actually. I would have had even more but at the time, I just knew one. Now, thankfully, I’ve been introduced to so many more queens. I didn’t come out until I was 18. So as I progress, and become more open in my queerness and become more accepting of things, like I can paint my nails and I can beat my face everyday, I’m slowly opening up more to that world.”

Photography by SARAFONFILM

Who is Mr. Haque and how is he different from Farhan?

“In my regular life, I’m not as bold as I am when I have the makeup on and the outfit on and the heels on — once those are on, I’m a whole different person. That’s when I’ll say the things I want to say. When I’m just regular Farhan, I can’t walk up to someone and say hi. But when I’ve got Mr. Haque on, he’ll go up to any person on the street and just say, ‘What’s good? What’s up? Let’s be friends.’ I definitely have to bring forward that persona when I’m mingling with fashion people, because that’s a whole skill in itself.”

How would you describe Mr. Haque and your brand in three words?

“Theatre. Glamour. Movement.”

@itsmrhaque Only just the beginning. 🥂 #aspiringdesigner #fashiondesigner #torontobased #fashion #fyp ♬ original sound – Ij Arias

What’s next for you?

“I love making costumes and I’ve always done that, but I want to have a website with ready-to-wear so anyone can shop my brand. I’m also in the process of working on my third collection and the show for that will hopefully be happening sometime in the fall. I can’t give too much away but the entire show is basically a dance number and we’re infusing clothes into it. I’m throwing a lot at it in hope that the risks [will pay off] and people will see that, ‘Oh yeah, he can do it.’”

Current style favourites such as cargo pants, platform shoes and even oversized tote bags also made appearances on the Parisian streets. Others turned to Y2K-esque minimalism with lots of exposed midriffs, crop tops and, of course, daringly low-rise pants. And don’t even get us started on the sunglasses!

In a rare deviation from her and her sister’s usual black, monochromatic ensembles, Mary-Kate Olsen was spotted wearing a bright red coat in New York recently. And that’s not all — the fashion designer doubled down on her surprisingly colourful outfit, sporting a bold pair of metallic, gold loafers. Baggy, ripped jeans completed the look, nary a stitch of signature black or grey in sight.

RELATED: Our Favourite Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Fashion Moments

Some social media users immediately noticed this out-of-character style choice and took to Twitter to shared the colourful look.

“Mary-Kate Olsen wearing color, it’s time for summer!!!” shared Twitter user @MIUCClAMUSE. Others were more taken aback by the designer’s surprising outfit choice. “Seeing an Olsen twin wearing colour feels like spotting a shooting star,” wrote @kirkpate on Twitter.

So why is it so shocking to see an Olsen twin wearing anything other than neutrals?

Over the past 15 years, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who are co-founders of the quiet luxury fashion brand The Row, have become notorious for their timeless, sophisticated-yet-effortless uniform (and matching serious facial expressions). But their style hasn’t always followed their now-typical monochrome palette.

To fully understand the Olsens’ style evolution, you have to travel back in time to their Full House days in the late ’80s and early ’90s. During this period, the two young actresses took turns playing the youngest Tanner sibling, Michelle, and if their off-screen outfits weren’t identical, they were at least complementary. In stereotypical early ’90s style, the emerging fashion trailblazers would also frequently wear trends of the era, such as floral dresses, wire-framed sunglasses, and overalls.

Photography by Getty Images

In their post-Full House era, Mary-Kate and Ashley took on a series of now-iconic television and movie roles. As they hit the red carpets in the late 90s and early 2000s for films such as It Takes Two, Passport to Paris, Holiday in the Sun and their final movie together, New York Minute, their style was slightly more mature as it evolved to match their more grown-up tween and teenage selves.

While the fraternal twins would often continue to match, the end of their joint film career also saw their style and beauty choices start to diverge. By 2004, Mary-Kate had decided to ditch her iconic blonde hair for an auburn-brunette shade while Ashley went for a dramatic blonde fringe. Other differences became increasingly evident as each of the girls’ individual sense of style developed.

Photography by Getty Images

During the last few years of their acting careers, and especially immediately following their retirement, the twins were coming into their own as style icons and became synonymous with the “boho-chic” trend. The bohemian look quickly became the pair’s signature style as they experimented with lots of layering and accessories or would opt for loose-fitting pieces made of flowy fabrics that opposed other Y2K trends of the time.

By the time the Olsen twins launched The Row in 2006, their style had evolved beyond their boho-chic era into a more casual-yet-sophisticated way of dressing that often consisted of oversized pantsuits, minimal accessories and, of course, the all-black ensembles that they’re known for today.

Since the late 2010s, the Olsens have retreated further out of the Hollywood spotlight with each passing year as they quietly work on their label. And, whenever they’d be spotted in their luxurious off-duty looks, the enduring allure around the two sisters would only grow as their matching monochrome outfits had an undeniable air of mystery to them.

For their few public appearances in recent years, the twins have consistently opted for head-to-toe black. One of their most recent and notable monochromatic matching moments occurred when the sisters wore black vintage leather Chanel to the 2019 Met Gala, which directly opposed many of the bright, colourful, high-camp looks that other attendees wore to “Notes on Camp”-themed event.

The twins’ allegiance to dressing in mostly black, especially when they were once known to follow other trends, is a big reason why Mary-Kate’s recent bright-red coat and gold loafer outfit was so shocking.

Nevertheless, whether the twins were leading the boho-chic pack back in the mid-2000s, showcasing their luxurious, minimalistic The Row designs in head-to-toe black, or throwing us colourful sartorial curveballs, it’s clear that the Olsen twins are some of the most intriguing (and mysterious) style icons we’ve ever seen.

With her sophisticated style and ability to turn just about anything she does into the latest trend, there’s no doubt about Sofia Richie Grainge’s It girl status. And the American socialite has proven her influence yet again by wordlessly reviving a bygone (and somewhat controversial) hair trend — the side part.

RELATED: It’s the Summer of Sofia Richie Grainge

In a playful TikTok of Richie Grainge and her friend, comedian Jake Shane, lip-synching to Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and Aqua’s new collaboration for the Barbie movie soundtrack, the newlywed casually debuted her hair styled with a deep side part that left viewers reeling.

@sofiarichiegraingebarbie world♬ original sound – Young Money

“No side parts are not back you guys don’t look like her,” wrote one commenter. “This is not a drill side parts are back in,” wrote another user. And perhaps no other response captured what thousands were thinking more than this one: “PS. On behalf of all millennials, thank you for giving the side part the justice it deserves. It’s been hard out here!”

But why is the return of this once-beloved hairstyle so divisive?

If you were on TikTok back in the summer of 2020, you’ll surely remember the playful feud that broke out between some Gen Zs and millennials when user @missladygleep said, “Prove me wrong, but I don’t think there is a single person who looks better with a side part than they do a middle part.”

Since then, debate over the once extremely popular hairstyle has continued on social media, but it wasn’t until Richie Grainge’s latest video that people seem to be reconsidering the look — and attempting to emulate it.

For many millennials, side parts (often featuring distinctly swoop-y bangs — think Rihanna in her Pon de Replay era) were a defining aspect of their style identity during their teen and early adult years in the late ’90s and early 2000s. This is directly opposed to many of Gen Z’ers preferred hairstyles, who typically opt for a middle-part these days, often slicked back into “clean girl” buns.

Side parts have their place in beauty history, too. Icons such as Marilyn Monroe and even Jessica Rabbit, for example, were known for their deep, dramatic side parts and pinned-up curls, which are still the standard of vintage glamour today.

According to Pew Research Centre’s definition of the generations, Richie Grainge herself is part of Gen Z, which is especially interesting when you consider how historically unpopular side parts are with the generation. But, as she paired the hairdo with a chic all black outfit and classic Chanel accessories, Richie Grainge proved yet again that her personal sense of style transcends modern trends, fads and even popular opinion.

The hairstyle seems to be a risk that’s already paid off, too. Despite the initial shock from some people, tons of the socialite’s followers are already embracing the new look and trying Richie Grainge’s new side part for themselves.

And, if this trend is anything like others that Richie Grainge has set, side parts may just be here to stay — whether we’re ready or not.

UPDATE: In an interview with Entertainment Tonight that was published on June 8, 2023, Jennifer Lawrence revealed the actual reason she wore flip-flops to the 2023 Cannes Film Festival red carpet.

Despite speculation that she wore the shoes in protest of Canne’s alleged “no flat shoes” policy, it turns out that the A-lister’s footwear choice was purely for comfort and safety. In the interview, Lawrence explained that the heels she was originally wearing were a size too big. When it came time for her to descend the infamous Cannes red carpet steps, she thought that she’d fall if she wore heels. So, she made the wise decision to change into a sensible pair of flip-flops.

“I was not making a political statement,” said Lawrence. “Not that I wouldn’t — I had no idea that there was a whole controversy with people wearing flats or walking down the red carpet barefoot… I’m all for making a statement, I would just want it to be on purpose.”

Although it turns out there wasn’t a deeper meaning behind Lawrence’s Cannes footwear choice after all, there are many other celebs who have seemed to take a stand against the supposed no flat shoes “rule” at Cannes.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival is well underway and the star-studded event has already gifted us with countless glamorous, high-fashion celebrity looks. Jennifer Lawrence certainly lived up to that standard with her vibrant Dior gown worn on the red carpet on May 20 — but it was the flip-flops she paired with the look that really captured audiences’ attention.

RELATED: The Best Looks From the 2023 Cannes Film Festival (So Far)

At first glance, one may think that the unique footwear choice is a nod to Lawrence’s “relatable” celebrity persona and a desire to prioritize comfort over style. But, there actually may be a deeper meaning behind the star’s decision to swap out her crimson high heels for the black flip-flops that she wore to walk down the carpet’s famous steps.

It’s widely known that the dress code for Cannes red carpets is formal, black tie attire, but there appears to be an unwritten rule that women are expected to follow to attend the festivities: they must wear high heels.

While the origin of this unofficial guideline is oft-debated, there’s no doubt that high heels have long been regarded as a staple of femininity and attractiveness for women. A 2022 study found that women in high heels were regarded as being more sexually attractive and of a higher social status than women who were wearing flats. And yet, while sky-high stilettos may complement an outfit, sometimes a chic, comfortable pair of flats is the more responsible call if you don’t want to be in pain all night.

No one knows this better than the A-listers who often have to attend hours-long events in constricting clothing and uncomfortable footwear. As such, there are several other famous female celebrities who have challenged this sexist “rule” on past Cannes carpets — and some have been more direct with their statements than others.

Isabelle Huppert and Cate Blanchett in 2023

Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t the only star to seemingly stand up against the rule at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. French movie star Isabelle Huppert gave a subtle nod to the absurdity of the guideline by wearing nude Anatomic heels by Balenciaga at the premiere of Killers of the Flower Moon. This wasn’t just any old pump though, the design and colour of the heel were made to mimic a bare human foot, which totally made it look like Huppert was defying the “only high heels” rule on the carpet.

Cate Blanchett took one of the most direct stances of all when she presented the Breakthrough Artist Award to Iranian-French star Zahra Amir Ebrahimi at this year’s festival. Before introducing Ebrhaimi on stage, Blanchett made note of the sexist “ban” as she said, “I am going to take my heels off, in honour of the women of Iran. This is to stab all the people that stand in the way of women’s rights.” Ebrahimi had to flee Iran when she was in her twenties after an intimate video of her and her boyfriend was leaked and a criminal case was made against her for having pre-marital sex. As the two artists shared a hug onstage, it became abundantly clear that Blanchett speaking out against the festival’s “no flat shoes” ban was actually a much larger political statement on the need to speak out on gender inequalities for all.

Kristen Stewart in 2018

Kristen Stewart also made a statement against gender inequality in the fashion world on the red carpet for Blackkklansman at the 71st annual Cannes Film Festival in 2018. Similarly to Roberts, Stewart ditched her Louboutin stilettos midway through her appearance and walked the rest of the carpet barefoot — and the star was much more outspoken about the alleged high heel rule. “I feel like you can’t ask people that any more. If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you cannot ask me either,” she told reporters. “I get the black-tie thing but you should be able to do either version — flats or heels.”

Photography by Getty Images

Julia Roberts in 2016

As she walked the red carpet for the premiere of Money Monster back in 2016, Julia Roberts infamously kicked off her heels midway through the event and concluded her appearance barefoot. When asked about her decision to ditch the shoes, Roberts said, “A lot was happening from my ankles up. Let’s not forget all that. A lot of time and effort went into ankles up.” Whether this act of rebellion was a direct response to the “no flat shoes” rule at Cannes, its timing certainly makes it seem like it was a statement. In 2015, just one year before Roberts walked the carpet barefoot, a group of women were allegedly not allowed into a screening of a film at Cannes because they were wearing flat shoes.

Queen Bey returned to the stage for her first solo tour in almost seven years on May 10 as she kicked off her international Renaissance Tour in Stockholm, Sweden — and the pop star did not come to play with her Beyoncé Renaissance tour looks.

RELATED: Beyoncé Said Quit Your 9-5

The “Break My Soul” singer opened her almost three-hour-long show by performing classic tunes such as “Dangerously in Love” and “1+1” in a custom Alexander McQueen crystal-embroidered bodysuit with matching ankle boots (below). The outfit was a classic Beyoncé look as it highlighted the star’s silhouette with its exaggerated shoulder pads and extra detailing around her hips.

Beyoncé and her dancers then slipped into custom Courrèges to perform “I’m That Girl,” “Alien Superstar” and other hits from her latest album, Renaissance. For this look, Bey sported a silver bodysuit that featured a circular cutout reminiscent of a magic mirror in the middle of her torso. Her dancers also wore matching silver two-piece sets that channelled the futuristic, nightlife vibe of this portion of the show.

Next up was a brightly-coloured and holographic mini dress by David Koma that captured the cool ’70s-disco energy of the night. Bey even came on stage in this ’fit wearing matching sunglasses and a complementary jacket to perform the club hit “Cuff It” and later took the accessories off to belt out songs like “Energy” and “Break My Soul.” Italian jewellery brand Almarow also created a custom pair of earrings named “Renaissance Superstar Earrings” to complete this powerful look.

As the superstar sang through her show’s 36-song setlist, another costume highlight included a custom pearl-adorned Balmain corset, which she paired with a matching hat, sunglasses and thigh-high black latex boots. Beyoncé also stunned in a bejewelled and (literally) figure-hugging custom Loewe bodysuit by Jonathan Anderson (below) that was inspired by a dress from the brand’s Fall 2022 ready-to-wear collection. She paired it with elegant black opera gloves, complete with press-on nails, that perfectly matched the outfit’s eye-catching design.

The looks kept getting better as the show went on, but perhaps one of the most exciting moments of the night happened when Beyoncé walked out in a white gown that, with the help of two robot arms and a UV light, soon transformed into a colourful-triangle-patterned dress that left the audience in a daze.

And of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention how Queen Bey wore a literal bee costume, which was custom-made by Mugler and inspired by a look from the designer’s Spring 1997 haute couture collection, aptly named Les Insectes, to perform “America Has a Problem.”

To wrap up the night, Beyoncé flew above the stage on a sparkling, silver horse — reminiscent of the one on her Renaissance album cover — in a matching custom Coperni look designed by Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant. As she said her final goodbyes to the crowd after the hours-long show, her metallic bodysuit and ankle boots shimmered as her cape gleamed in the bright arena lights.

Since debuting her first set of looks, Queen Bey has already updated her tour wardrobe with a handful of jaw-dropping new costumes. And as her worldwide tour continues, stay tuned as we share a city-by-city round-up of Queen Bey’s costumes.

Sutherland, England

The global sensation showcased a fresh outfit when she opened her concert in Sutherland, England on May 23 in a glamorous custom sky-blue Brandon Blackwood dress. The elegant high-slit gown was paired with matching pale blue heels, opera gloves and a sparkling necklace and earring set.

Paris, France

Bey also debuted a new opening outfit when she hit the stage on May 26 in France, as she (literally) sparkled in a silver gown that was decked out in sequins.

London, England

The singer continued to raise the bar with her new costumes during her five-show run at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from May 29 to June 4.

For the first show on May 29, Beyoncé hit the stage in an electric blue custom mesh gown by Roksanda that completely covered her body and was fitted with a long train.

What really stole the show in London, though, was a bespoke Off-White bodysuit that took over 50 hours to make. The red look, which included several elements of Off-White’s Fall 2023 collection, including 40,000 red crystals, was complimented by Beyoncé’s dancers’ matching red ensembles — and, of course, her daughter Blue Ivy’s costume as she joined her mother on stage.

As she began her second night in London, the singer stepped out in a sparkly, deep-red Alexander McQueen dress that glistened on stage. The dress, which was inspired by McQueen’s fall 2023 ready-to-wear collection, featured a plunging sweetheart neckline and reams of draped fabric, and was accessorized with matching opera gloves and metallic thigh-high boots.

For her third London show on June 1, Bey wore a custom Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood black latex corset dress with unique structured spiral sleeves.

Then, for the opening look at her final show in London, she wore a custom form-fitting Robert Wun gown that featured a plunging v-neckline, dramatic shoulder ruffles and an asymmetrical cascading train.

When she came back on stage to perform “America Has A Problem” during her last London concert, the superstar stepped out in a bespoke Mary Katrantzou mini dress with a fun twist. The look, which featured black and gold detailing and a surrealist hourglass figure, was coined the “perfume bottle dress” as its silhouette, and matching headpiece, mimics the appearance of a classic fragrance bottle. Staying true to her “Queen Bee” identity, Beyoncé also paired the look with a pair of antenna-esque sunglasses.

Barcelona, Spain

Beyoncé debuted two new custom looks while performing her almost three-hour set in Spain on June 8. First up was a disco-inspired Stella McCartney dress and leggings set that featured ethically-sourced materials and thousands of hand-placed, lead-free crystals. On her Instagram, McCartney shared photos of the singer wearing her design with the caption, “So proud to see @Beyonce in custom, conscious Stella crystals… Reflecting the silver touches, power and glamour of her iconic tour.”

The second new look was a custom red, black and silver leather Intarsia catsuit by Fendi. The costume, which drew inspiration from illustrations by Antonio Lopez in Fendi’s Spring 2022 collection, was paired with matching thigh-high boots, silver opera gloves, cat-eye sunglasses, a red wide-brimmed hat and an upcycled fur Intarsia cape.

Marseille, France

As she took the stage in Marseille, Beyoncé once again surprised her audience with two new costumes. The first was a custom Alberta Ferretti leotard featuring a miniskirt and asymmetrical train. Like so many of her other Renaissance tour looks so far, Bey accessorized with matching over-the-knee boots and opera gloves.

The second costume she premiered in Marseille was a custom Jacquemus look reminiscent of a disco ball. The mini-dress was fitted with small, silver reflective panels and paired with (what else?) thigh-high boots and opera gloves, of course.

Beyoncé is set to hit the stage at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto this July and, with over 50 more shows to go on her Renaissance tour, fans are buzzing about what surprise costume changes are up her sleeve. We can’t wait to see what Queen Bey has in store.

Disney’s new live-action adaptation of the beloved 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid has been making major waves both on social media and at the box office. After its theatrical premiere on May 26, the film, which stars singer-songwriter and Beyoncé’s protégé Halle Bailey as Ariel, earned approximately $117.5 million at the box office in the days immediately following its release, making it the fifth most successful movie release over Memorial Day weekend in history.

RELATED: Halle Bailey, The Little Mermaid, and the Art of Method Dressing

From the movie’s refreshed score to its iconic fairytale storyline, it’s no wonder it’s been such a success so far. And one of the most stunning aspects of this adaptation is Bailey’s embodiment of the “little mermaid” herself. Playing such an adored Disney princess is no easy task and, according to many fans and film critics, Bailey rose to the occasion, capturing Ariel’s desire to be part of the human world with her compelling acting and breathtaking vocals.

Beyond her talents, Bailey captured the essence of Ariel because of the physical transformation she underwent to look like the mermaid. From costuming to hair and makeup, here’s everything we know about how Halle Bailey transformed into Ariel for the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid

Creating Halle Bailey’s mermaid glow

Just how did Bailey’s makeup capture that mermaid glow in the movie? Bailey’s makeup artist, Kat Ali, revealed some of the products and rituals used while filming on her Instagram.

For face makeup, Ali went with MAC’s Face and Body foundation and Uoma Beauty’s Stay Woke Concealer. She then used Milk Makeup’s Cream Blush Stick in Quickie and Dior Beauty’s Backstage Universal highlighter for an extra dose of leading-lady shine. Ali created Bailey’s mermaid pout by pairing MAC’s classic lip pencil in the muted, golden-nude shade Cork with Chanel Beauty’s Rouge Allure lipstick in the shade 174 Rouge Angèlique.

For eyes, Ali used Tom Ford eyeshadows to create the shimmery lid that Bailey wore for most of the film. For her perfectly-placed eyelashes, Ali and Bailey opted for eyelash extensions instead of falsies or mascara, which made the most sense for “under the sea” filming. But beauty really is pain sometimes, even for a Disney princess. Bailey revealed in a recent interview that the eyelash extensions would sometimes interfere with her work. Since they were on a strict filming schedule, Bailey would have no choice but to get her freshly-filled eyelashes wet before the 24-hour waiting period during which you’re supposed to keep a new set dry. As a result, she had to endure days where her eyes were burning in between takes — ouch!

A post shared by Kat Ali (@katalicreative)

And last but not least, we couldn’t take our eyes off the glittery mermaid scales that covered Bailey’s skin during her underwater scenes, but, according to Ali, those were actually all CGI-generated. That same scaly effect was also digitally edited onto Bailey’s cast mates, like Javier Bardem who played King Triton, to enhance the oceanic illusion. Ali shared that she did products such as Glossier’s Priming Mostiruizer and Kate Somerville Skincare’s Factor 50 Uncomplikated Makeup Setting Spray to keep Bailey’s skin glowy and healthy while they were filming in the hot summer heat.

Tailoring her mermaid tail

One of the most recognizable aspects of the animated Ariel’s look is her iconic sea green mermaid tale and the live-action adaptation paid tribute to the classic look with its own unique spin for Bailey’s version of Ariel.

Costume designer Colleen Atwood created a life-like mermaid tail that was perfectly fitted to Bailey in order to give the appearance that the aquatic appendage was simply an extension of her body. To do this, Atwood, who has won four Academy Awards for costume design during her decades-long career, constructed the tail using 3D screening and carefully placed layers of silk to create the illusion of iridescent, shimmering scales whenever Ariel swam around. This wasn’t the final product that we see in the movie, though, and Bailey didn’t actually wear the tail for any of the scenes that took place entirely underwater. Instead, Bailey wore a motion-capture suit while filming and the movie’s visual effects team later used CGI to digitally edit the tail onto her body. The post-production technology scanned the hand-made tail that Atwood and her team created and later added additional layers of dimension and colour to create a final, more “realistic,” mermaid tail that now appears in the movie. Whoa.

Ariel’s new hairdo

It’s no secret that CGI played a huge role in the making of the movie, and that extended into the animation of Bailey’s iconic red Ariel hairstyle. Director Rob Marshall revealed that most of the movie’s underwater scenes were filmed with Bailey wearing a large wig cap that was covered in technological “markers.” Later, with the help of blue screen technology in post-production, the flowing combination of dreadlocks and loose pieces of hair were digitally attached to Bailey’s scalp to create the illusion of them floating through the water.

During the land scenes, Bailey wore extensions and her natural hair, which is styled in long dreadlocks that reach past her waist, a choice that was surely by design. Bailey shared in a recent interview that she’s had her dreadlocks since she was five-years-old, saying her hairstyle is part of the “essence” of who she is. As such, keeping her natural hair as part of her version of Ariel was extremely important to her. The film’s creative team agreed and hair designer Camille Friend devised a plan to maintain the health of Bailey’s locs while also creating a modern version of the classic red hairstyle that Ariel is known for. To do so, Friend explained that only the roots of Bailey’s hair were dyed the ginger-red colour she sports in the film and each of her individual locs were wrapped in the same colour. To preserve the health of Bailey’s natural hair, and for continuity reasons while filming, Friend said that the hair-wrapping process took about 12 to 14 hours and that the film probably spent approximately $150,000 on Bailey’s hair in total.

The specific shade of her hair sparked some controversy on social media, with some moviegoers saying that the look should’ve been a brighter red more similar to the animated Ariel’s hair. While there were many options for how the live-action Ariel’s hair would look, Friend ultimately went with the more subdued ginger shade not only because it looked more realistic than a bright red, but also because it suited Bailey’s complexion better.

Regardless of peoples’ personal feelings, these aesthetic choices were made to honour the original animated Ariel while creating an modernized version of the princess for new Little Mermaid fans to admire and, more importantly, see themselves in — and if that doesn’t capture the true meaning of Disney magic, we don’t know what does.

According to reporting in The Coast, what followed included claims of workplace abuse, changes to the board of directors followed and a “smoulder of gossip” that “became wildfire.”

It’s that time of year again when movie and fashion lovers can come together to take in all the excitement of one of the season’s most glamorous, star-studded events — the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

RELATED: Is Elle Fanning the Queen of the Cannes Film Festival?

If you recall last year’s festivities, it was one for the books. Anne Hathaway stunned audiences by wearing five gorgeous looks throughout the week, which ranged from an all-white custom Armani Privé column skirt and crop top combo to a hot pink Valentino gown. Bella Hadid‘s vintage, old-Hollywood ensembles were a social media sensation. And Adriana Lima beautifully showing off her baby bump? Iconic!

This year, the festival runs from May 16 to May 27, and the stars have (so far) walked the 2023 Cannes carpet in bold colours and extravagant gowns. Think lots of sparkles, full skirts and even a cape or two. They also love their matching accessories — check out Helen Mirren’s blue hair and Naomi Campbell’s sunglasses, for starters.

Every May, the Cannes Film Festival not only gifts us with the premiere of several new Hollywood and foreign films, but it also presents us with some of the most exciting celebrity moments — and this year’s 76th annual event was no exception.

As the festivities took place over the last ten days on the French Riviera, countless A-listers graced the red carpet in their best black-tie attire and most glamorous, jaw-dropping gowns. Some even sported the recently revived exposed bra trend while others opted for uniquely puffy and playful silhouettes. The excitement didn’t just stay on the carpet, though, as many behind-the-scenes moments made waves on social media too. After all, would it even be Cannes without a little drama?

Check out our wrap-up of some of the top moments from the 2023 Cannes Film Festival below.

Rawdah Mohamed stole the show in Robert Wun’s “The Scorched Bride” couture dress

Photography by Getty Images

We can’t begin to talk about fashion at this year’s festival without mentioning the stunning Robert Wun gown that Somali model Rawdah Mohamed wore to the premiere of La Passion De Dodin Bouffant. The couture look is known as “The Scorched Bride” dress from Wun’s Spring 2023 horror-themed collection and with the dramatic burn marks on the beautiful silk fabric, it certainly lives up to its name. Stunning details such as its distressed veil and detailed train also make the outfit a red carpet standout. The dress also proves that modesty has a place on red carpets, which is a principle that Mohamed has long been an advocate for.

Brie Larson shuts down a journalist who asked her about Johnny Depp

During a press conference for the jurors at this year’s event, Brie Larson had a tense exchange with a reporter when she was asked about her opinion on about Johnny Depp’s new film, Jeanne du Barry, opening the festival. This comes after months of Depp being in the news for his controversial abuse case with his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Larson was visibly confused by the question and told the reporter, “You’re asking me that? I’m sorry, I don’t understand the correlation or why me specifically.” The reporter explained that since Larson has been a vocal supporter of the Time’s Up movement (and was a member of the cause’s celebrity advisory council), he was curious about her thoughts on Depp’s involvement in this year’s festival and if she’d watch his film. In response, Larson ended the awkward exchange by saying, “Well, you’ll see, I guess, if I see it and I don’t know how I’ll feel about it if I do.”

Helen Mirren sported a bold blue hairdo

@fashionmagazine

Helen Mirren and Lady Gaga have certainly brought a new meaning to “feeling blue!” Who do you think wore it best? Comment below! #Cannes2023 #cannesfilmfestival #ladygaga #helenmirren

♬ obsessed with me – Illan.

There were tons of exciting beauty moments (we’re really tempted to get bangs now) on this year’s Cannes red carpet but a standout has to be Helen Mirren‘s colourful hairstyle that perfectly matched her gown. As she attended the premiere of Jeanne du Barry, audiences were blessed with the surprise of seeing Mirren in a beautiful blue dress with a matching azure updo. Fun fact: Lady Gaga sported a similar look back at the 2019 Golden Globes. Who said “feeling blue” is always a bad thing?

Jennifer Lawrence wears flip-flops and Cate Blanchett ditches her high heels

The “no flat shoes” ban for women at Cannes has been a topic of conversation yet again this year as both Jennifer Lawrence and Cate Blanchett seemingly took a stand against the alleged “rule.” While she didn’t speak out directly on the ban, Lawrence caught lots of media attention when she changed from her red high heels into a pair of black flip-flops before descending the famous Cannes red carpet steps. Blanchett made a more direct statement by telling her audience exactly why she was taking off her heels while presenting the Breakthrough Artist Award to Iranian-French star Zahra Amir Ebrahimi. We’ll certainly be paying attention to the footwear choices at Cannes next year!

An influencer doused herself in artificial blood on the red carpet to raise awareness for the Ukraine war

In one of the more shocking moments from this year’s festivities, a Ukrainian blogger named Ilona Chernobai made a daring political statement ahead of the premiere of the sci-f horror film Acide. As she posed in a blue and yellow dress, which represents the colours of Ukraine’s flag, Chernobai suddenly grabbed two small packets of artificial blood from her dress and poured them on herself before being quickly ushered off the carpet. In an unverified English translation of a statement Chernobai posted on her Instagram account after the protest, the influencer allegedly said, “I took my chance and with this act, I reminded what is happening in Ukraine!!!…People should not forget about us!”

Sam Levinson’s The Idol premiered — and social media had a lot of thoughts

The award for the most controversial screening at this year’s festival has to go to The Idol, a new HBO show from the minds of Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd) and producer Reza Fahim starring Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp. The buzzy series focuses on the life of an up-and-coming pop star (played by Depp) and acts as a cautionary tale for the dark side of Hollywood. But why’s it so controversial? In March 2023, Rolling Stone exposed the drama that was going down on the show’s set while explaining how its plot romanticizes abuse and even called it a tale of twisted “torture porn.” Users on social media chimed in to critique the show as well, with many connecting Levinson’s troubling directorial choices to similar Euphoria plotlines while celebrating the bad reviews for the series as they came out. Despite the controversy, Levinson still claims that the series will be “the show of the summer”  — will you be watching?

In his latest leading man role, Timothée Chalamet has been announced as the new face of the Bleu de Chanel fragrance for men — a partnership that’s a stylish fit for both the Oscar-nominated actor and the classic Parisian brand.

RELATED: Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet Just Destroyed Yet Another Red Carpet

Though he’s been known for sporting high-fashion looks for years now, this collaboration is Chalamet’s first partnership with a fashion house. Chanel picked the Dune star, who they call “one of the most alluring and audacious actors of his generation,” to be the face of the men’s fragrance partially due to his edgy persona and often daring style choices, according to an official release from the brand.

Not one to shy away from bold colours, unique silhouettes and unexpected textures, Chalamet has made a name for himself for his creative and gender-fluid red carpet style, frequently working with designers like Louis Vuitton and Haider Ackermann. Back in September of 2022 at the Venice Film Festival, the actor made headlines as onlookers were blown away by his show-stopping backless red jumpsuit, which was designed by the aforementioned Ackermann. You know what goes great with a fashion-forward gender-bending jumpsuit? A woody aromatic scent.

Without even trying, his off-duty style is just as cool. The star is often seen sporting his favourite Prada jacket and loves to layer with streetwear staples like windbreakers and sweaters (like the iconic Glossier hoodie Timmy wore back in 2019, and no, he wasn’t an ambassador, just a fan) when he’s out and about. Fans are so enamoured with his street style that there’s even an Instagram account called @readytimmywear, which has over 30K followers, that chronicles Chalamet’s looks both on and off the red carpet.

Chalamet’s meteoric rise to fame after starring in the 2017 coming-of-age film, Call Me By Your Name, has been nothing short of neck-breaking. Since his big break, Chalamet has starred in movies such as Lady Bird, Little Women and Beautiful Boy. Fans of the 27-year-old actor are also waiting on his next projects to hit the big screen, which includes the titular role in Wonka, the prequel to the 1964 Ronald Dahl novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the next instalment of the Dune series, Dune: Part Two. And how could die-hard Chalamet fans forget last year’s cannibal love story Bones and All, co-starring Canadian (and fellow fashion darling) Taylor Russell?

In a conversation with Chanel about his new beauty gig, Chalamet discussed how working with the brand felt like a “no-brainer” and explained, “As someone who is passionate about movie making and acting,” the significance of “collaborating with a fashion and beauty house that has a vast, substantive history with cinema.” That history continues with this campaign — a campaign film, directed by Martin Scorsese, be be released this coming fall.

Photography courtesy of Chanel

So, is Chalamet an everyday scent kind of guy, or someone who uses fragrance for special moments? It would seem it’s the latter, with the actor taking as thoughtful an approach to grooming as he does style. “When you put on Bleu de Chanel, you’re emphasizing a distinct experience, or maybe a certain look, occasion, or date,” the actor says. “For me, personally, there’s a specific intention behind fragrance. I’m not someone who wears a scent all the time. When I do, it becomes emblematic of a moment, and later there’s a nostalgia for that moment and it becomes something more meaningful.”

The Bleu de Chanel campaign, shot by legendary fashion photographer Mario Sorrenti, will be released in June.

Catherine, the Princess of Wales, and her eight-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, stunned viewers on May 6 as they arrived at King Charles III’s Coronation wearing matching floral-inspired crystal headpieces.

RELATED: Colour, Tailoring and Hats Reigned Supreme at King Charles III’s Coronation

Many royal watchers speculated as to whether Kate Middleton would wear a traditional tiara to the special occasion, as is customary for regal events such as last weekend’s, and if she would borrow one of her predecessor’s precious pieces of headwear for the day.

Instead, the royal mother-daughter duo opted to don the less traditional flower-and leaf-adorned headpieces that were designed by Jess Collett and Alexander McQueen specifically for the coronation.

And the intricately embellished crystal headbands have a deeper significance that goes far beyond them just being stunning statement pieces.

In accordance with King Charles III’s love for nature and the environment, the floral-designed headpieces are said to represent the newly-crowned monarch’s commitment to combatting the dangers of climate change. There’s even been much speculation about how the King will tackle this issue, with ABC News predicting that he will be known as Britain’s first “climate king.”

Designer Jess Collett confirmed the headpiece’s nod to King Charles in an Instagram post where she stated how she has a special personal connection to the monarch’s charity, The Prince’s Trust.

“It was 25 years ago that I secured my first loan from the @princestrust to start Jess Collett Milliner,” the designer shared on Coronation Day. “Thank you King Charles and @princestrust for your support ……….still going strong today and loving my trade.”

Further speculation around the silver bullion-fashioned regal headband has pointed to the design being a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II. During her coronation in 1953, Queen Elizabeth’s six maids, who followed and helped her into Westminster Abbey, wore visually-similar silver headpieces to those that the two princesses wore this past weekend.

Whether this design choice was a purposeful nod to the late Queen, Kate did honour the monarch through another piece of jewellery she wore at the King Charles III’s Coronation as well.

In addition to the sparkling headpiece, the Princess donned the George VI Festoon Necklace. This sacred three-strand chain, which was commissioned by King George VI in 1950 for his daughter, who was known only as Princess Elizabeth at the time, was one of the Queen’s favourite jewels and she often wore the piece on special occasions. Kate also wore Princess Diana’s diamond and pearl earrings in memory of her late mother-in-law.

Kate is no stranger to royal dressing and understands the sartorial significance that comes with every piece of clothing and jewellery she wears. Tying in years of tradition while incorporating King Charles’s modern environmental values into the design is yet another example of the the Princess of Wales’s commitment to honouring the Royal Family and serving the monarchy, one that been under intense scrutiny in recent years.

Anyone who’s been to a Harry Styles concert in the past two years, or has seen how his thousands of fans like to dress up for his shows, knows one thing to be true — Harries (the fandom name for Styles’ enthusiasts) have created a distinct concert-going uniform that consists of everything from brightly-coloured fringe jackets to platform boots, cowboy hats and, of course, feather boas.

RELATED: What To Wear To a Harry Styles Concert

In a new music video for Styles’s latest single, “Satellite,” the British pop star paid tribute to his fans’ unique fashion sense in a memorable way.

The video begins with a Mars rover-like robot named Stomper roaming the backstage halls at one of the 15 sold-out Love on Tourshows that Styles played at the Forum in Los Angeles in January of this year.

Stomper soon travels out to the arena floor but before that, the robot stops in front of a TV to listen to a documentary about the Mars Curiosity rover. At this point, Successionfans will recognize a familiar voice as Logan Roy himself (Brian Cox) narrates a short voiceover.

After the brief Succession cameo, Stomper ventures out to the floor of the venue as the night’s concert comes to an end. The small-but-mighty robot then finds itself navigating around hundreds of concert-goers who, as one can tell from their brightly-coloured boots and ’70s-inspired bell bottoms, are unmistakable Harries.

Real-life Harries immediately noticed how the singer included these details about themselves and their outfits in the video — and quickly took to social media to share their thoughts.

There’s been speculation on social media if Styles used real footage of actual concert-goers in the video alongside the clips of actors decked out in Love on Tour wear. The general consensus seems to be that a mix of actor and actual fan footage was used, especially as fans now recount seeing the little robot roaming ominously among feather boa remnants and allegedly recording footage after some of the shows.

Many elements of the Styles fandom’s eccentric concert outfits can be attributed directly to Styles’s own past looks. For instance, the feather boa is not only a popular accessory among his concert-goers, the singer also donned one himself during his 2021 Grammys appearance. Other standout style signatures of the British singer that are often replicated by fans include sequins, leather pants and leotards.

However, Harries don’t solely wear outfits that replicate Styles’s own looks. Instead, a culture centred around a shared respect, kindness and inclusivity has been fostered among fans and the colourful outfits they usually don to Styles’s shows represent just that — the ability to freely and openly express who they are.

Styles himself has made headlines for how his fashion sense has not only evolved throughout his career but how it sometimes challenges conventional norms. And, after appearing on the cover of Vogue’s December 2020 issue in a dress, Styles began to hear more questions regarding his gender identity, and even faced backlash for the look

Despite the constant questioning, the star has continuously refused to label himself in terms of sexuality and gender identity. He was quoted in the June 2022 issue of Better Homes & Gardens, saying, “The whole point of where we should be heading, which is toward accepting everybody and being more open, is that it doesn’t matter, and it’s about not having to label everything, not having to clarify what boxes you’re checking.”

Styles’s willingness to be playful with his fashion sense has been fun for fans to watch as well. On his latest tour, Styles’s wardrobe has ranged widely from night to night — and fans quickly came to look forward to seeing what he’d wear at their show. A pattern also quickly emerged during some Love on Tour shows as the singer’s stylist, Harris Lambert, would sometimes post a photo of Styles’s outfit for the night on Twitter, often crediting Gucci (Styles is an ambassador for the luxury label) with creating the look.

Love on Tour is set to wrap up this July in Italy after over 160 shows — and hundreds of thousands of unforgettable outfits from Styles and his Harries alike.

“Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” might have been the official theme of the 2023 Met Gala, but it could have just as easily been “vintage couture.” Countless guests pulled from the fashion archives as they celebrated Lagerfeld’s legacy with their looks at the event on May 1, with several drawing inspiration from the late designer’s work at iconic fashion houses such as Chanel, Fendi and Chloé.

Some celebrities took the archival approach a step further and opted to wear designs that they had previously donned themselves.

Nicole Kidman honoured Lagerfeld by slipping into a Chanel haute couture gown that she originally wore for her classic Chanel No. 5 campaign back in 2004. In the commercial for the popular fragrance, Kidman played a celebrity who was struggling with her role in the public eye. The ad, which was directed by Baz Lurhmann, featured clips of her running through New York’s Times Square in the blush pink gown. Last night though, the silk tulle dress endured much less severe conditions as it gracefully draped down the legendary steps of The Met.

Lagerfeld’s longtime muse Gisele Bündchen also re-wore a past look as she walked the carpet in a Chanel Spring 2007 bridal gown complete with a grand feathered cape. Bündchen, who first wore the dress in a photoshoot for Harper’s Bazaar South Korea from the same year, was all smiles at her first post-divorce Met as she was clearly having fun posing in the angelic outfit.

Vanessa Kirby also sported an original Lagerfeld design on the first Monday in May, sparkling in the historic “shower dress” from Chloé’s Spring 1983 collection. The English actress said that wearing an original piece, which was previously being showcased at the North Carolina Museum of Art, “felt special” during a red carpet interview.

Naomi Campbell (another longstanding Lagerfeld muse) also wore a vintage Chanel confection, pulling from Chanel’s Spring 2010 haute couture collection. Dua Lipa, who was a co-chair of the event, wore vintage Chanel haute couture as well, showcasing a bridal gown from the Fall 1992 line that was famously worn by supermodel Claudia Schiffer.

There’s certainly a sustainable fashion element to stars re-wearing pieces that were already made prior to the 2023 Met Gala — and these gowns weren’t the only reference to sustainability on Monday. According to Vogue, an installation made of flowers and thousands of recycled water bottles was the main centrepiece of the event. The innovative decoration, developed by designer Tadao Ando, was reportedly a reference to how Lagerfeld always looked to the future, and the eco-friendly component of the design was also a nod to that forward-thinking ideation.

While they may not have re-worn exact gowns to the Met Gala on May 1, several other celebrities drew major inspiration from Lagerfeld’s vintage designs. Margot Robbie, for example, wore a stunningly similar remake of a Chanel black dress fitted with a transparent bodice that Cindy Crawford previously wore down the Spring 1993 runway 30 years ago.

K-pop star Jennie Kim also looked to vintage Chanel for her Met Gala look, sporting a recreation of a mini-dress from the house’s Fall 1990 ready-to-wear collection.

Ashley Graham, Penélope Cruz, Maude Apatow, Allison Williams and Lizzo also followed the trend and selected looks that were deeply inspired by Lagerfeld’s past creations.

Whether these stars wore the originals or near-identical replicas of previous designs, the willingness to recycle memorable looks points to another aspect of sustainability in fashion — the importance of not losing the significance of past artwork. Through the numerous nods to Lagerfeld’s classic creations last night, it’s clear that when it comes to high fashion, the late designer’s artistic legacy and dedication to his craft lives on.
