Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour Continues to Be a Fashion Extravaganza

In case you missed it, Beyoncé is in the middle of an historic world tour — her first in seven years! — and the jaw-dropping outfits she’s been sporting have been just as captivating as her Renaissance Tour performances.

We covered the first leg of Beyoncé’s Renaissance Your looks above, and now that Queen Bey is on North American soil, we’ll do our best to log all her new concert ensembles here. First up: Canada’s very own Toronto, where Beyoncé and her wildly talented crew of backup singers and dancers performed two epic shows on July 8 and 9.

Toronto, Ontario

Beyoncé kicked off the North American leg of her Renaissance Tour by opening the show in a custom Tiffany & Co. Elsa Peretti mesh dress. The one-a-kind creation featured chains of bezel-set stones on approximately 150 feet of mesh ribbon that took over 200 hours to make. Bey complemented the look with (what else?) a Tiffany & Co. jewellery — vintage earrings and a custom anklet.

Later on in the July 8 show at Toronto’s Rogers Center, the queen debuted another new tour outfit that was giving Destiny’s Child “Survivor” (IYKYK). The pop star’s camouflage look was comprised of a sequined bodysuit, a custom sequined cropped jacket by Adidas x Ivy Park, and thigh-high heeled boots. She accessorized the shimmering camo moment with knit gloves, oversized black sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat that she took off to showcase her honey-blonde inches.

For night two in Toronto, Bey busted out yet another sparkly new outfit in the form of a custom lace Fendi dress with honeycomb-inspired crystal embroidery based on the house’s Fendi Couture Spring/Summer 2021 collection.

Philadelphia

For her first Renaissance Tour concert in the U.S., Beyoncé slipped into a custom Givenchy mini-dress that was accented by intricate cut-outs and flourishes of fringe. The singer accessorized the dress with ankle-tie heels, sheer black opera gloves, and Tiffany & Co. diamonds.

Bey chose another sequin-covered camo outfit from Ivy Park for her Philadelphia tour stop, this time a two-piece set with attached gloves and chaps-like detailing that extended into her boots.

Finally, the superstar selected a dramatic silver look from Valentino to close her Philly show. The ensemble featured a miles-long cape, and she finished the look off with sparkly boots — and a matching silver horse, naturally.

Nashville

For the next stop on her U.S tour, Bey fully committed to the disco cowboy aesthetic she’s been sporting all Renaissance season. Wearing a glittery red dress, the “Cuff It” singer accessorized with patent leather cowboy boots and a statement belt and necklace.

She then changed into a hot pink look that would give Margot Robbie and the rest of the Barbie Movie cast a run for their money. True Beyhive members will be quick to clock the similarities of this Ivy Park outfit to the one she wore in Amsterdam and Toronto. But instead of a gown, Beyoncé turned it into a fringed romper and jacket and added another pair of thigh-high boots.

Then to top it all off, Queen B collaborated with British fashion royalty, Alexander McQueen, on an embroidered bodysuit with matching gloves and shoes.

Dua Lipa Was Every Inch the Mermaid Barbie in Her Shimmering Fishnet Dress

This Barbie is freeing the nipple on the red carpet! Singer Dua Lipa wore a crystal mesh gown to the world premiere of the highly anticipated Barbie movie on July 9. And while most interpretations of Barbiecore have been either replicas of iconic Barbie outfits or head-to-toe pink (for the record, no complaints here!), Lipa’s custom chainmail Bottega Veneta look — whose all-over shine gave it an almost wet appearance — was the perfect modern fashion choice for her Mermaid Barbie character.

Dua’s look was right on trend — naked dresses (and MIA bras) are having a prolonged moment, as evidenced most recently by at the Fall 2023 couture shows in Paris where the transparent trend appeared in street style looks, on the runways of Jean Paul Gaultier and Schiaparelli, and on Florence Pugh, who famously freed the nipple wearing sheer Valentino. For the Barbie world premiere, Dua Lipa accessorized her shimmery mesh moment with matching undies and jewellery by Tiffany & Co.

Dua Lipa, of course, has a buzzy cameo in Greta Gerwig’s star-studded Barbie movie that hits theatres on July 21. The pop star also appears on the film’s sure-to-be epic soundtrack with the summer dance bop “Dance the Night” alongside artists like Lizzo, Charli XCX, Nicki Minaj and Billie Eilish — the latter two both attended the L.A. premiere, too. And no, their outfits didn’t disappoint.

You can embrace your inner ski bunny without ever hitting the cold icy slopes by wearing your cutest intarsia knit and furry boots for après. And do you think those girlies wearing two-piece exercise sets topped with oversized white shirts are all coming from pilates? The same goes for tennis — follow the Kate Middleton Wimbledon style playbook and be the most stylish courtside spectator in colourful day dresses, playful prints (including a penchant for polka dots) and crisp tailoring.

Case in point: Kate Middleton’s masterclass in tennis match fashion at Wimbledon on July 3. The Most Exciting Street Style At Fall 2023 Couture Week in Paris

The Paris couture Fall 2023 shows kicked off in the City of Light on July 3. With presentations from the masterful couture artists at Schiaparelli, Iris van Herpen, Chanel, Thom Browne and more on the schedule, the creativity on display will no doubt have people talking. And, if day one and two were any indication, the street style outside the shows will be just as memorable, too.

So far at the Paris couture Fall 2023 shows, we’ve seen a few trends emerge, including statement gold jewellery and XL earrings, crisp white tailoring and a notable absence of bras. Did This L.A.-Inspired Fragrance Turn Me Into a Wellness Girlie?

On an overcast day in May, I’m sitting in a black SUV, driving up a winding road to a jaw-dropping cliffside Malibu mansion. I’m here to discover Louis Vuitton’s new fragrance, Pacific Chill, a scent inspired by L.A.’s wellness culture, and more specifically, fresh-pressed juice. (A beverage so ubiquitous in California, it might as well be a Diet Coke in 1985.) On the agenda: yogic breath-work, energy healing and a sound bath, all with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and plenty of celebrity sightings (it is L.A., after all).

Now, I’m a gal who loves a treat. Online shopping from bed? Yes, please. An iced latte a day? Of course. Bi-weekly mani-pedis? A fixed expense. But treatments that slide more to the holistic side of the scale? Not historically my thing. Despite my slight skepticism about the woo-woo I’m about to experience, I decide to dive in head-first — and the result is straight-up transformative (but more on that in a minute). When in Malibu, right?

Louis Vuitton’s Pacific Chill is the fifth fragrance dedicated to California that master perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud and artist Alex Israel, who designs the perfumes’ packaging and artwork, have collaborated on together. Its inspiration is a fresh juice composed of carrots, oranges and ginger that Cavallier Belletrud drank on the patio of the Beverly Hills Hotel, surrounded by the somewhat sour, verdant smell of blackcurrants. And so, Pacific Chill, a bright, citrus-forward scent that whispers summer with its sophisticated blend of carrot seed essence, blackcurrant, orange, mint, basil and apricot, was born. “Creation and inspiration in California is just like that,” Cavallier Belletrud told us.

Before entering the modern space for an afternoon of Pacific Chill-inspired mindfulness, I’m offered a choice between Champagne and a juice the colour of a California sunset. I oscillate and choose the Champagne, wondering what this says about me. I walk through mirrored rooms with walls projecting swaying palm trees, the sound of waves crashing, and a plush rug underfoot meant to mimic soft sand. At a grassy area overlooking the ocean, a tall man in gauzy cream pants is sitting cross-legged. Yogi Cameron guides us through a meditative breath-work session, teaching techniques designed to keep you in the present. He asks us to think about how we’re feeling and what we want in life. I think about an iced latte and resist picking up my phone to order Uber Eats. Instead I practice deep breathing with the sounds of birds flying overhead and waves lapping the shore, while sneaking sips of the beautiful Champagne perched at my side. If this is how L.A. does wellness, I think I can get on board.

Eventually I swap my bubbles for a fresh juice that tastes a lot like how Pacific Chill smells — bright, fruity, herbaceous — en route to my private reiki session. I’m greeted by a gentleman in a beige tank top and wide-brimmed hat named Gabriel and, dear reader, the next 30 minutes of energy healing were nothing short of life-changing. It’s true! I arrived in the Golden State as Jerry Seinfeld and left as Gwyneth Paltrow.

Gabriel explains that the thoughts we put out in the world gather “charge” and become more powerful. This is particularly true of negative thoughts. (Guilty.) (Is that a negative thought?) The energy clearing will help wipe out these thoughts and leave me with a clean slate. I lie on a massage bed, close my eyes and concentrate on my breathing as this gentle healer slowly clears my chakras — by the way, I say things like “chakra” now — using a firm yet tender touch. On the left side of my body, he holds my hand and places his other hand on my ribcage. I clutch his hand involuntarily and feel an unmistakable rush of emotion. When the session is over, I look at a monogrammed LV towel perched on a travertine wall while telling Gabriel about this overwhelming feeling, aware of this co-existence of luxury and wellness. He says he felt it too and that it was my solar plexus chakra, the one responsible for our sense of power and self-worth, and that he was clearing in that moment. He explains that perhaps, practical Taurus that I am, I’ve pushed some feelings to the side in order to “get on with life” and that those feelings are there, waiting to be healed. Gabriel, don’t make me cry before heading back to a function where Miranda Kerr, the face of Pacific Chill, is in attendance.

That night, I receive a follow-up email from Gabriel. “Reflecting upon our shared encounter, I am moved by a profound sense of gratitude. Your beautiful Taurus energy, grounded and resilient, like a sturdy tree standing tall amidst life’s varied seasons, was a privilege to connect with.” And here I thought I was coming to L.A. to smell Louis Vuitton Pacific Chill!

I leave California feeling like I finally get L.A. wellness culture. It’s not simply about militant mindfulness and $18 USD Hailey Bieber smoothies from Erewhon (turns out Cavallier Belletrud is a fan). It’s about putting yourself and your wellness first, while still enjoying the decadent pleasures of life, if that’s what you fancy. Champagne and green juice. Parfum and reiki. This self-indulgent and newly healed (!) Taurus wholeheartedly approves.

Back in Toronto, I spritz Pacific Chill and am instantly transported back to my healing session with angel Gabriel, and I feel content. After all, as Cavallier Belletrud told us, scents are supposed to make you happy. “When you choose a fragrance, you’re connecting with yourself,” he said. I decide I’m going to book another reiki session. It’s not cheap, but I’m worth it. Isn’t a commitment to wellness the ultimate luxury?

Well, as even the most casual of drinkers surely knows, the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) addressed this by updating their guidelines for alcohol consumption early this year and according to this update, no amount of alcohol is safe.

That said, if you *must* imbibe, the CCSA recommends no more than two drinks a week and cautions that consuming three to six drinks a week can increase the likelihood of developing certain types of cancer. In addition, having more than seven drinks per week increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, with the risk increasing with each additional drink. Dark.

Now that patios are in full swing and cottage season is about to kick off, what do these stringent guidelines mean for your hot girl summer? Or more specifically, if you like to enjoy a drink or two, how can you cut down on booze and still socialize at your leisure? One practical place to start is opening your mind (and palate) to non-alcoholic alternatives to your go-to Aperol Spritz, like elevated flavoured soda waters and mocktails.

FASHION spoke to Andrea Grand, co-founder of sparkling beverage brand Barbet, about how drinking habits may change in the wake of the rigid CCSA guidelines and increased awareness around the health risks of alcohol. “It creates more opportunities! We’re still a baby brand, but even in our short [time] of being around, we’ve seen a shift in the conversation around beverage menus at restaurants and the need for diverse and different products,” she says. Here, Grand shares her top tips for navigating the social scene this summer, whether you’re trying a “damp lifestyle” or going entirely booze-free. Grab a mocktail and read on.

You don’t have to take an “all or nothing” approach

Missed the opportunity the try Dry January earlier this year and want to attempt to go sober for a period of time? “Do what feels right for you — dry, damp, or anything in between,” Grand says. “These are opportunities to break the rituals or habits you’re in, make small changes and reassess how things are going. It’s about making choices that are right for you,” she says of deciding how much to cut down on drinking, and for how long. “It’s like the book Choose Your Own Adventure.”

Get out of the house

“Don’t hermit — get out and about! There are so many fun things to do that aren’t centred around alcohol,” Grand tells FASHION, adding that a damp lifestyle (a.k.a. one where you drink sometimes and not others) is about balance. “Next time you need to grab a drink with friends, you can always opt for a mocktail or non-alcoholic sparkling water instead. It’s the same experience, but without the consequences.”

It’s not your responsibility to explain why you’re not drinking

“The main thing is to own it!” says Grand. “It is no one’s business if you are or aren’t drinking.” Grand adds that it’s a priority of Barbet’s to “start getting people to focus on what’s in a person’s can or cup, not what isn’t.”

Entertaining? Level up your non-booze options

Grand says that a surefire way to make guests feel more comfortable when they aren’t drinking is to offer elevated cocktail alternatives. “We don’t mean offering up a pop/soda you would sip on when you were sitting at the kid’s table or a margarita but with no tequila. We mean options that are just as flavourful, bold, playful, appetizing and high-quality as their alcohol counterparts.”

Kate Middleton’s Style and the Soft Power in Her Fashion Choices

November 16, 2010 is a day that will go down in history. After seven years of dating, Prince William and Kate Middleton announced they were engaged. Finally! And for the fashion world, it was the day the “Kate effect” was born. Within minutes of appearing at the photocall, Catherine’s blue Issa London wrap dress sold out in the UK — and it went on to sell out in 43 countries including the United States. Such has been the case for so many Kate Middleton outfits since.

Kate gave her first press interview that day, sitting down for the traditional engagement interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby, and she didn’t give another one for nine years. But like Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana and countless people in politics (hey, Michelle Obama), Kate’s clothes tell us her story. Her engagement dress established who the Duchess of Cambridge would be as a royal: perfectly appropriate, full of symbolic gestures — the sapphire blue colour of the Issa dress was a subtle nod to Princess Diana’s own engagement outfit — and always flying the fashion flag for Britain. “I think she’s acutely aware of the power she wields which is why we see her choose the labels she wears so carefully,” Bethan Holt, author of The Duchess of Cambridge: A Decade of Modern Royal Style, tells FASHION.

There is a message behind every blouse, necklace, handbag and pair of shoes Kate wears. And as the duchess reaches a decade of marriage (and royal duty) on April 29, her power is becoming clearer than ever. Here, we dive a little deeper into those fashion choices and the story they tell.

Soft diplomacy at its finest

“Kate is a future queen and wife and mother to two future kings so she chooses outfits which encompass that,” says Holt. “They’re elegant, regal and epitomize how seriously she takes her role by supporting British designers and symbolizing the royal family’s soft power.” Shortly after her engagement, Kate had her first day on the job at a royal engagement in North Wales. She somehow had to show the world that this commoner was ready to one day be queen consort. A fascinator was obviously the solution. Designed by British designer Vivien Sheriff, the fascinator featured military badges, including the Royal Welch Fusiliers, of which Prince Charles is Colonel-in-Chief. It was a subtle nod to the family she was joining and its role supporting the Armed Forces.

But Catherine’s most symbolic fashion moment was undoubtedly her Alexander McQueen wedding dress. The royal family’s job is to “strengthen national unity” and Kate weaved that duty into her gown’s bodice and skirt. Beautifully intertwined in the lace were roses, thistles and shamrocks representing England, Scotland and Ireland respectively, as well as daffodils for Wales. This might be the most stunning example of soft diplomacy.

The Duchess of the high street

When the Duchess of Cambridge left Buckingham Palace after her wedding, she walked across the palace lawn in a $90 Zara dress. “She knows that people love to see her as ‘normal,’” Holt says. The duchess joined the royal family at a unique time, explains Holt. The Queen and Diana didn’t have to contend with the internet, and fans being able to identify what they’re wearing (and where to buy it) within minutes. Fashion sleuths have quickly found Kate’s $65 Topshop maternity dress, $30 Gap pants and $8 Zeen earrings (among many other items).“There was also this growing expectation for the royal family to be more ‘relatable’ when Kate came onto the scene so it made sense for her to make wearing [the] high street her ‘thing.’”

A new work uniform

In 2018, we saw a new Duchess of Cambridge. Fresh from her third maternity leave, she sashayed into the Victoria & Albert Museum in a tweed Erdem dress with an edgy neckline, zippy hemline, bold earrings and velvet shoes. Holt says there was definitely an “I’m back and better than ever” feel to Catherine’s look that we never saw after her previous mat leaves. “It felt like a signal that she was ready and willing to take on more royal responsibilities, to step into her future and to use fashion very cleverly to do that,” Holt explains.

Over the following months we saw small tweaks to Kate’s wardrobe — there were still coat dresses, clutches and her beloved nude pumps, but she added wide-legged trousers, handbags and block heels. It was a spin on the uniform she frequently wore to royal engagements for her early years’ work, showing how seriously she took her duties (and how seriously she wanted to be taken). “The duchess is astute enough to understand that glamour is a huge part of her appeal and that she can harness that to make even more impact in her work,” Holt explains. Say, the glamour of a duchess arriving at an event in a Gucci blouse, purposely worn backwards. The media went wild and her picture (and her work supporting children) was on front pages everywhere. “She was reluctant to embrace this too much in the early years of her marriage but now she’s learnt to use it for good,” Holt says.

Flying the flag for Britain (and shopping local)

From her very first day as a royal-to-be, Kate has supported British fashion (remember the Issa dress?). And she’s done a damn good job of it, boosting the British fashion economy by $1 billion a year. But like the rest of us, she’s changed her shopping habits over the last year. “She’s joining the huge movement towards shopping small and local which has been fuelled by lockdowns,” Holt says. In September 2020, Kate stepped out wearing a new necklace with each of her kids’ initials. The piece was made by Irish brand All the Falling Stars, who had orders from around the world for the necklace Kate wore. The designer has had to enlist help from her family and friends to help with shipping orders! Later in 2020, the duchess debuted a new leather bag by Grace Han and the Kate effect struck again. Sales doubled for the London-based designer. “It’s a combination of her ever-growing confidence and her consciousness that she can really elevate the brands that she wears,” Holt says.

Our future Princess of Wales

The next decade poses a new duty for Catherine — becoming the Princess of Wales when her husband becomes King of England. Does that mean a new style? “I don’t think there will be radical changes but we might see the duchess adopt more and more of a uniform, like the Queen,” says Holt. And truly, who better to emulate in fashion and duty than Her Majesty?

Colour, Tailoring and Hats Reigned Supreme at King Charles III’s Coronation

It’s not everyday that a new a monarch accedes to the throne. And what does one wear to the official coronation of said new ruler? We found out today as King Charles III was officially sworn in as monarch of the British Commonwealth following his mother Queen Elizabeth’s death in 2022 after more than 70 years on the throne.

It was a typically rainy and dreary U.K. day as international politicians, members of the Royal Family, and select celebrities filed into the Westminster Abbey for the coronation. But the gloomy weather didn’t stop many guests from wearing cheerful colours and striking chapeaux. Take the ever-stylish Queen Letizia of Spain who wore a bubblegum peplum skirt suit with killer matching heels and a hat covered in pink netting.

Also in pink were Sophie Trudeau, who wore a rose satin skirt with matching sheer-sleeved top, textured clutch and (what else?) a hat perched atop her head, and Katy Perry, who wore a retro pastel pink suit with opera gloves and an out of this world fascinator.

There was much pomp and circumstance around the event, as is to be expected at such a rare occasion in history, despite the fact that King Charles III’s Coronation was at times plagued by rumours of musical guests turning down offers to perform and, of course, speculation over the attendance of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Ultimately, the former was in attendance while the latter chose to remain in California.

Kate Middleton looked the part of the Princess of Wales in a regal velvet cloak atop bespoke Alexander McQueen and diamond headband, with Princess Charlotte by her side in a matching, albeit more age-appropriate, version of the sparkly headpiece.

The Met Gala After-Party Uniform Was Sexy, Slinky and Sheer

Everyone knows the real revelling happens after the party, and the notoriously raucous Met Gala is no exception. I mean, if you show up to fashion’s biggest night dressed as a cat, that means you’re ready to let loose at the Met Gala after-parties, no?

The 2023 Met Gala, which honoured the work and legacy of Karl Lagerfeld, presented a red carpet replete with vintage Chanel, wedding gowns (an homage to the late designer’s tradition of closing each Chanel couture show with an elaborate bridal look), tributes to Choupette, and design signatures like pearls, tweed and 3D flowers. Naturally, this made for quite a cohesive Met Gala red carpet where most attendees understood the assignment. Thankfully, the famous guests seemed to also take the *unofficial* Met Gala after-party assignment to heart, too, where the dress code was short, skin-baring, and extra sassy. EmRata taught us:

Celebrities Like Ariana Grande Don’t Need To Justify Their Bodies

I rolled my eyes. While scrolling past Ariana Grande’s recent TikTok about body image, beauty and health, I rolled my eyes so far into the back of my skull I saw stars. If I have to see one more video of a thin, conventionally beautiful celebrity addressing fan concerns over their shrinking body, I will, without a doubt, pass away, I thought. But then I listened.

Grande’s appearance, like that of every other person in Hollywood, has long been a topic of conversation. But over the last few weeks, celebrity-watchers-turned-health-watchdogs have picked up on something new. In a since-deleted video that’s now been endlessly stitched, duetted and quoted, a TikTokker says they’re concerned about Grande “wasting away over the years.” The kicker? They compare a photo of her when she was 15 to a current photo of her at age 29 to illustrate this perceived Ariana Grande body change.

“I don’t do this often,” Grande begins in her three-minute video statement that’s garnered a whopping 60-million views. “I don’t like it. I’m not good at it. But I just wanted to address your concerns about my body, and talk a little bit about what it means to be a person with a body and to be seen and to be paid such close attention to.” OK, you have my attention.

“There are many different ways to look healthy and beautiful. And personally, for me, the body that you’ve been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body,” she continues. “I was on a lot of antidepressants and drinking on them and eating poorly and at the lowest point of my life when I looked the way you consider my healthy, but that, in fact, wasn’t my healthy.”

Her confessional continues in the same vein, stressing that “healthy can look different,” that you never know what someone is going through and that everyone is beautiful, “no matter what weight, no matter how you like to do your makeup these days, no matter what cosmetic procedures you’ve had — or not — or anything,” she says.

It is, by all accounts, a desperate grasping for humanity, something often elusive to celebrities (and, mind you, to anyone who doesn’t fit the mold of the Western standard of beauty). It’s a desperation that I can’t, as a normie, understand on Grande’s level, but can as a woman with a body that’s very much on the internet, never to be erased, and as a fat person who deeply empathizes with the fervent need to address the “but” in these conversations, as Grande does in her statement. But I’m healthier now. But I’m happier now. But look at me now. But I was sad then. But.

Here’s the bigger picture: As a society, we fail to agree on the fact that no one — no celebrity or regular ass human being — owes anyone anything as it relates to their bodies. No explanations about weight loss or gain, about plastic surgery or procedures, about genitalia or gender representation.The list goes on. We fail at this perhaps because we love to, for lack of a better word, consume them. We eagerly scroll through paparazzi photos. We look at before-and-after pictures to make us feel better about ourselves; to remind ourselves that celebrities aren’t, in fact, infallible. I’m not immune to this. I want to feel less alone, too. I want to know that it isn’t just me; that even the richest, most famous people in the world share my struggles, too.

But there is a delusion around celebrity, the delusion being that we (the public) have the right to comment on their bodies; a right justified by these people choosing to be in the limelight and therefore choosing to be critiqued and picked apart relentlessly. What we really mean to say is we feel badly about our own bodies, and prefer to be critical of others — the ones who deserve it. The ones who asked for it. What we don’t see is how doing this means we’re doing it to ourselves and to each other, too.

And when we don’t feel comfortable doing that — commenting on celebrity weight gain and loss because we allegedly know right from wrong — we pivot to “health.” Because caring about someone’s health is legitimate, despite not being their doctor (or any kind of healthcare professional, period), right? What happens now is not the fault of Grande’s, but the conditioning of a world and a wellness pedagogy that says true beauty is health, that if you’re healthy then you must be beautiful, too, and that we owe health to ourselves and to the world. This kind of health can be seen and performed (read: gorgeous skin, a lean body, drinking green juice, going to the gym). At least, we think we can see and do it.

We can’t. And unfortunately, Grande assuring that “healthy can look different” and that hers looks like what she implies — getting off antidepressants, drinking less, eating healthier and getting smaller as a perhaps unintended result — feeds the idea that we have to be healthy to be respected at all. Because that’s what she’s asking for; an understanding and respect from the millions of people who “know” her that this is her version of healthy.

On a smaller scale, I know what it’s like to be held under a microscope. As someone who has been an athlete, who likes to move their body, I feel the pressure to justify why I’m “still fat,” to address those aforementioned “buts.” As a person who’s been sober for five years, I feel the pressure to explain my own weight gain and to reckon with the fact that people definitely thought I looked healthier when I was keeping myself small using drugs, alcohol and cigarettes, and by over-exercising and monitoring everything that went into my body. Do you want me to be healthy, or do you just want me to be smaller? is a question that used to torture me. Now the answer to this rhetorical question is a sad truth I hold with compassion and a gentle knowing that it doesn’t f-cking matter.

There’s a reason why celebrities escape the spotlight when something is wrong. They go to rehab, they stop touring, they hide. This is why. We’re so preoccupied with other people’s bodies and by proxy our own that we, Grande included, can’t see the bigger picture. The picture being that healthy doesn’t look like anything at all. It’s not a number on a scale or a pant size or clear skin or long, glossy hair. It’s not a diet or an absence of needing medication to get by. It’s not a lack of mental illness, of chronic conditions, of needing substances to cope with the pain of *gestures vaguely* this.

Yes, we should, as Grande says, be less comfortable commenting on people’s bodies and health. But we should also feel less pressured to justify our own, and instead reframe how we think about health entirely — and the things we absolutely owe no one but ourselves.

The Rise of Deinfluencing and the Power of Negative Reviews

Social media influencers are the modern-day arbiters for what’s hot and what’s not. Whether that’s convincing you that you can’t live another day without a pair of adidas Sambas or Mikayla Nogueira’s L’Oréal mascara controversy had you racing to the drugstore to grab your own tube, the sway that content creators like Alix Earle, Glamzilla and Matilda Djerf have cannot be understated. They have huge followings — and the power to create hype that sells out products instantly.

But the tables have turned — if you’ve been on TikTok in recent months, you’ve surely seen “deinfluencing” videos on your “For You Page” where creators explain why they think you shouldn’t buy certain products. Here, we dive into the deinfluencing trend, how influencers can use it to their advantage, and what it might mean for the future of content creation.

What is deinfluencing?

Deinfluencing videos continue to go viral for doing the literal opposite of traditional influencer videos that promote fashion, beauty, wellness and home products. Instead, these posts try to convince viewers not to buy buzzy items, often while promoting more cautious spending habits.

The hashtag #deinfluencing has over 484 million views on TikTok and counting on videos cautioning people against buying products they felt didn’t live up to their expectations. Popular beauty goodies like the Makeup by Mario SurrealSkin foundation, wellness products like Bloom Nutrition’s Super Greens powder mix (you know the one that almost every morning routine or “get ready with me” video starts with), the omnipresent Stanley cup and the viral Zara bomber jacket are examples of goods that were rabidly popular — and now heavily deinfluenced.

Deinfluencing has sparked conversations about waste and overconsumption. The resounding message is this: Brands will continue to drop new releases, influencers will promote products (including ones they don’t truly love, but more on that in a bit), and you don’t need to buy into the hype every time.

“I didn’t realize how weird and abnormal [it is] to have 17 different blushes that are all the same colour,” says TikToker Elsie Maria in her de-influencing video about how normalized rabid consumerism is. “ I didn’t think about the long-term effects.”

A response to a looming recession

The prevalence and longevity of deinfluencing is also symbolic of the reality of a potential economic recession and suggests it’s a response to people being more aware of how they spend their money. According to the CBC, consumers and businesses are expecting a recession this year, and with rising inflation rates and cost of living, consumers are cutting back on spending.

In her video, TikToker Jenna Romano says, “in a recession, the ‘nice to have’ products and ‘need to have’ products become more distinguished.”

“This trend is great, especially during this time when we are about to enter a recession and many are searching for ways to decrease their discretionary spending,” Danica Nelson, a lifestyle and personal finance content creator and senior product marketing manager at Shopify, tells FASHION.

“Does one really need the Stanley bottle when you already have five perfectly functioning water bottles at home?” Nelson adds. (The answer, of course, would be no.)

What deinfluencing means for influencers and brands

The deinfluencing trend relates to discussions of authenticity and transparency between content creators and their audience. Not every new product actually deserves an audible gasp. People tend to build deeper connections with content creators who are relatable and honest, rather than those who always post positive reviews or share snapshots of their always-perfect lives, according to Nelson. “People tend to gravitate to creators that commit to being transparent and those that don’t solely focus on the highlights, butterflies, and rainbows of life,” says Nelson. Ultimately, authenticity is more on-trend than ever — and deinfluencing is a strategy that content creators can use to build trust with their audiences.

Deinfluencing actually provides highly valuable information to brands, and potentially presents new marketing opportunities. “It would be a gigantic missed opportunity if brands weren’t actively paying attention to their products being deinfluenced and criticized on social media.” It’s a blessing in disguise, because these videos are “valuable customer feedback and insight that companies would typically need to run costly and time-consuming research studies to get access to,” says Nelson.

In Nelson’s view, deinfluencing doesn’t signal the end of the influencer era, but rather an opportunity for consumers, influencers and brands to re-evaluate marketing and consumption habits. “In an age where almost everything is an ad and people are becoming more easily influenced by products and services they see advertised on social media, this deinfluencing trend is a refreshing perspective that encourages folks to see through the hype,” says Nelson.

After all, makeup expires. Trends come and go, and come back again (hello, rosettes). The pressure to keep up with the latest viral products is unrelenting and deinfluencing is a welcome reminder to be as intentional as ever with our purchases.

Thankfully for us celebrity style watchers, Hathaway has her red carpet outfit formula figured out (mini-dress + platform heels + legs for days + easy breezy attitide) and we, the humble commoners, can enjoy seeing her wear it with aplomb time and time again. It all started with this epic Valentino pink moment that would make Barbie weep, circa July 2022:

This might not have been the first time Hathaway actually wore the outfit formula, but it sure sealed its fate as her MVP — and Anne Hathaway’s fate as a rising style star. And it’s a combo that, despite her owning red carpet after red carpet in sleek column dresses and hooded gowns alike, she keeps coming back to. It’s just that good.

Case in point: the two mini-dress-and-platforms outfits Hathaway wore last week alone. First, the actor chose a black Givenchy mini-dress covered in rosettes for a Bvlgari press conference celebrating the jeweller’s new hotel in Tokyo on April 3, which she paired with black single-strap platform sandals. She kept her accessories to a chic minimum, save an eye-catching piece of bling around her neck (the Bvlgari High Jewelry Serpenti Necklace, naturally) and a few casual diamond rings dripping off her fingers.

The next day, Hathaway had a monochromatic moment in her fail-safe outfit formula, sashaying in a vibrant grape mini-dress from Valentino which she teamed with coordinating violet tights and tall metallic purple platform pumps. Our beloved Andy Sachs kept her beauty simple with both looks, which really let the outfits shine.

And we’d be remiss if we didn’t include another recent mini-and-platforms moment from Ms. Hathaway — the black crocodile mini and sky-high boots the newly minted Versace model wore to the luxury label’s star-studded Los Angeles fashion show on March 10. Bonus points for the dark sunnies and sheer tights.

Once again, a flawless outfit execution made infinitely more alluring by the immaculately unbothered vibes Hathaway now exclusively gives off. Ultimately, like with most memorable outfits, it’s the wearer’s attitude that takes it to the next level. Because designer dresses and shoes are fabulous, but confidence is the best accessory.

This Corset Aficionado’s New Lingerie Line Is a Candy-Coloured Fantasy

Chloé Rogers just dropped her first-ever lingerie collection, and it’s a feast for the eyes.

Inspired by the names and surnames of her grandmothers, Scarlett and Gasque, the Canadian-born, London-based designer sought to create a line of luxury lingerie that represents a fusion of her family history while also spotlighting her longtime interest in Burlesque and the art of fine corsetry.

“I have always loved corsetry, but something I noticed was that traditional corsetry is quite niche,” says Rogers. Throughout the years, Rogers would purchase handmade pieces from vendors like Etsy and Depop, but always had trouble finding ready-to-wear items of the same quality from bigger labels that ship quickly. “I wanted to create traditional corsetry for women that was fashionable, on-trend, and was easy to purchase.”

After almost three years of planning, Scarlett Gasque was born: a luxury lingerie line meant to be worn out and showcased rather than hidden away. “A lot of people don’t want to spend 500 [dollars] on a set that no one is going to see. They want to spend that kind of money on a birthday dress, something that they can wear out and show off,” she says. “You can show your friends your corset, dress it up with jeans or a little skirt. But then at night, when you take off your jeans, you’re already in a full set.”

Below, FASHION chatted with Rogers about Dita Von Teese, corsets and her love of burlesque.

What’s behind the name Scarlett Gasque?

“Scarlett was my great grandmother on my mother’s side, and Gasque the last name of my great grandmother on my father’s side. My great-great grandmother Maude Gasque and her daughter, Maisie, are both women that I really looked up to. I had the pleasure of knowing Scarlett until I was 14 years old. I never got to meet Maisie, but I’ve heard so many stories about her.”

What led to your interest in lingerie?

“Growing up, I was very inspired by burlesque dancers and women like Dita Von Teese. I attended Central Saint Martins in London and studied fashion history and theory. I loved Edwardian courses and Victorian style, and something I was always drawn to was the perfect silhouette, whether it was through dresses or pants. But I always came back to corsetry. And that’s where I found my passion.”

What kinds of things do you do outside of the business to keep you inspired?

“I go to so many burlesque shows. Any show I can find, anything underground. I love exploring London and Paris. I’ve been to southern Spain, Los Angeles, Miami, places like that. The burlesque industry is a lot smaller than it used to be, so it’s really cool to find creators and people who are passionate about it and talk to them.”

Do you feel like the aesthetic of the brand matches your personal style? What’s different? What’s the same?

“I would actually say they’re literally the exact same. People come over to my house, and all the colours of my house are the colours of the brand. Everything in my house is yellow, pink and blue! My style is also very vintage, very luxury, but I like to experiment. I really love finding new creators instead of only looking at big designers. Many of the corsets I wear when I go out are from Etsy. A seller I always go back to is La Belle. She hand-makes all her pieces, and they’re very traditional. And that’s what I like wearing, the really traditional pieces. Nothing with a zipper, all real metal hardware.”

What are some of your favourite pieces from the collection?

“My favourite piece has to be the blue Scarlett set, which includes the Arctic Queen dressing robe with the matching bra, underwear and Scarlett waspie.”

How about in your own closet? Do you have a favourite item?

“One item that stands out to me is a corset gifted to me by my mom, one that she used to wear all the time. It’s not a fancy corset, more like shapewear. It’s a bit ruined, but it has a lot of history behind it. My mom wore it for 15 years, and when I wear it, it makes me feel good.”

Can you tease anything about the upcoming fall collection?

“Our fall collection is going to come out at the end of September. Everything is still going to be colourful, but I’ll say the next collection is more sexy, and it’s a little darker. Something I’m excited about is that we have beautiful raised handmade embroidery on some of our corsets, which adds a lot of texture.”

Finally, if you could describe the brand in one word, what would it be?

“Playful!”

The Subtle Flex of Kendall Roy’s Baseball Caps

What’s the opposite of a ludicrously capacious bag? A stunningly exorbitant chapeau like the ones Kendall Roy routinely wears, of course. On the HBO darling Succession, now in its fourth and final season, both the dialogue and the wardrobe have a blink-and-you-miss-it quality that means if you get up for a glass of water, you might not catch zingers like Tom Wambsgan’s decimation of cousin Greg’s date’s “gargantuan” Burberry tote — and the obscenely expensive yet seemingly anonymous luxury items worn by the Roy family.

In fact, Shiv, Roman, Kendall and Logan Roy’s wardrobes are so inconspicuously lavish, they appear downright basic. Case in point: Kendall Roy’s hats. To the untrained eye, it looks like Ken, played by Jeremy Strong, might have picked up a multi-pack of yawn-inducing navy baseball caps at Costco for this rich-guy-off-duty wardrobe (you know, the stuff an outrageously moneyed dude might wear to a clandestine weekend meeting). But to someone adept at sniffing out the quiet luxury on Succession, that fitted topper is a marker of the Roy family’s stealth wealth: a cashmere Loro Piana baseball cap that’ll run you upwards of $605 USD. Indeed, money talks and wealth whispers.

With Succession once again firmly embedded in the zeitgeist, the show’s covert displays of affluence are like a Where’s Waldo of fanciness where viewers can trying to spot the Brunello Cucinelli. The same could be said for pop culture moments like Gwyneth Paltrow’s recent ski accident trial in which her subtly extravagant ensembles were deemed “courtcore.” Decked out in a polished assortment of impeccably tailored separates, one would be forgiven for not immediately clocking that GP was sporting low-key opulent labels like The Row, Prada and Celine. As FASHION contributor Natalie Michie writes, “Paltrow’s neutral, well-tailored wardrobe is void of branding but is indeed very expensive. It’s the epitome of quiet luxury, and it’s downright poetic for a case about the inner workings of ski etiquette.” While we can’t comment on the validity of the trial’s ruling, the jury agreed unanimously on one fact: stealth wealth style was served.

Succession’s costume designer Michelle Matland told the Wall Street Journal in a 2021 interview that, as she sees it, the absence of a logo on Kendall Roy’s baseball caps says “there’s no relevant team but…team Me.” The show is about the icky inner workings of a filthy rich family within which, despite alliances being regularly formed, there isn’t an iota of actual trust or loyalty, after all. With just eight episodes of Succession left, we’ll be watching to see which Roy ends up miserably on top.

We Just Got Another Look At the Barbie Movie

Do you think we’ll all be a little sick of singing “come on Barbie, let’s go party?” by the time Barbie actually comes out in July 2023? Considering how long the film has been teased already, it’s not an entirely unfair question. Despite the fact that the first official Barbie teaser just dropped, the film has been in its hype era for way longer.

In July of this year, the internet couldn’t stop obsessing over images of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, spray tanned to golden California deliciousness, rollerblading at Venice Beach in blinding neon ’fits. News of Robbie’s casting as the iconic Mattel doll was confirmed in April but rumoured for far longer. But the film itself, a live action adaptation of Barbie world, has been in the works since 2014 (!), according to Entertainment Weekly. Here’s the scoop on that, plus everything else to know about the buzzy Barbie movie.

When is Barbie going to be released?

The film is slated to be released on July 21, 2023.

Who is starring in the live-action Barbie movie?

The film, directed by Greta Gerwig, stars Margot Robbie as the titular doll and Ryan Gosling as (who else?) Ken. And alongside the plastic power couple is a seriously star-studded cast, some of who appear in the teaser trailer. This includes Issa Rae, Canadian Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, America Ferrera, Hari Nef and Will Ferrell. When the studio released brand-new character posters for the film on April 4, it was also revealed that singer Dua Lipa will star as a mermaid in the film.

Wasn’t Amy Schumer originally going to play Barbie?

That is correct. Schumer was initially tapped to star as the blonde doll in 2016 when the film, billed as a new feminist take on the famous 1950s doll, was in development by Sony. The comedian left the project in 2017 due to “creative differences,” with Sony rumoured to have been wooing Anne Hathaway for the role. More delays sidelined the film and in 2019, it moved over to Warner Bros. and Gerwig, famous for directing Lady Bird and Little Women, took over.

What happens in the Barbie teaser trailers?

Well, you can see for yourself below, but basically nothing…and everything. The first peek audiences got at the live-action film in December 2022 included Margot Robbie’s Barbie emerging in a dusty desert at the dawn of time, clad in a classic striped bather and open-toe mules, naturally. There are super-tight curled bangs. We’ve got flashes of Ryan Gosling in a fringed leather vest with a 10-pack of bronzed abs peeking out underneath. There are brief snippets of dance numbers featuring Issa Rae and Simu Liu. Oh, and an image of Barbie looking out into a very pink Barbie world (Barbieland? Barbieverse?). I don’t think we get to see the Barbie RV but then again, most of it flashes so quickly, it feels more like a fever dream than a Barbie teaser.

Lucky for us, fans got a deeper look at the forthcoming film on April 4 when Warner Bros. released a second longer teaser trailer. We get a hint at the plot, which shows Barbie and Ken travelling from Barbie Land to the real world, along with tons of iconic Barbie fashion — think pink gingham and marabou mules for the gals and denim vests and neon rollerblades for the guys.

Stay tuned as more is inevitably revealed about Barbie in the coming months. After all, life in plastic, it’s fantastic.

Everything To Know About The White Lotus Season 3

Arrivederci, Sicily! It’s been…tense. But also funny, sad, delightful and without a doubt, a fully sensorial experience thanks to that wildly catchy The White Lotus season 2 theme song. I’ve been showering, unloading the dishwasher and scrolling Instagram with the electronic dinger acting as my life soundtrack, and may I just say it’s made the most mundane tasks just a little more fun? Anyway, the great news is that The White Lotus is officially coming back for a third season, so one can safely assume there’ll be a third iteration of the show’s theme song to enjoy. The bad news? No Tanya McQuoid to utter perfect lines like “did you knit your little cap?” Here’s what we know about The White Lotus season 3.

Where will The White Lotus season 3 take place?

The fancy locale of the third season’s fictional White Lotus resort hasn’t been confirmed by HBO, but that hasn’t stopped people from speculating.

Series creator Mike White hinted at some possible locations in an interview with Deadline back in October, before season 3 was even official, suggesting that it would be interesting to go to a whole new continent, like Asia. “I think it’d be fun to maybe go to a whole different continent. You know, we did Europe… maybe Asia, something crazy like that, that would be fun.”

A thread on Reddit suggests that The White Lotus season 3 could unfold in Japan or India, both popular suggestions on social media that track with White’s comments.

On March 27, Variety reported that the show’s third season will take place at a lush resort in Thailand. “As the first two seasons of Mike White’s The White Lotus were shot at Four Seasons resorts in Hawaii and Italy, respectively, it’s possible that Season 3 will take place at one of the luxury hotel giant’s four properties in Thailand, which are located in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui and the Golden Triangle,” the article states, noting that despite having received this info from multiple sources, HBO had declined to comment.

Will any of the characters from The White Lotus season 2 be back for season 3?

That remains to be seen, but given White’s record of having just two characters from season 1 return for season 2 (Tanya McQuiod, played masterfully by the iconic Jennifer Coolidge, and her new husband Greg, played by Jon Gries), it suggests he could do something similar in season 3. Now (SPOILER!) fans know from watching the season 2 finale that (seriously, spoiler!) our beloved Tanya can’t return, but it does leave some loose ends when it comes to her story. As writer Paul Tassi theorizes for Forbes, this isn’t the last we’ve seen of sinister Greg, who Tassi suggests is a “super villain” in The White Lotus universe.

“While we knew that at least one storyline would carry over from season 1 when we saw that Tanya was returning for season 2, in the wake of the finale which ends with Tanya’s death as she tries to escape an elaborate scheme to murder her and take her fortune, what’s been revealed is that The White Lotus universe may have a larger, over-arching, sinister plot, one that we may see continue when season 3 arrives next time,” writes Tassi.

By extension, this supports the idea that we also haven’t seen the last of Portia, who is the only living person (aside from the dude that jumped off Quentin’s yacht) who can connect the dots between Greg and Tanya’s death, with Tassi also theorizing that Quentin’s “nephew” Jack was meant to kill Portia, but instead let her go at the last second. “In the closing moments of the show, Jack warns Portia not to mess with the ‘powerful people’ he works for,” write Tassi, “including his uncle, but by proxy, that includes Greg, Tanya’s husband who now apparently inherits all of her vast fortune in the wake of her death.”

Have any new cast members been confirmed for season 3?

If the people of the internet have their way, both Pamela Anderson and Lindsay Lohan will be joining The White Lotus season 3. A fan-led campaign (including a petition) to cast Anderson as Tanya’s grieving sister got tons of attention back in February, while buzz around Lohan joining the all-star cast has recently been ramping up. According to Marie Claire, there are hundreds of tweets trying to manifest this iconic casting. No word yet on whether either of these famous women will appear in season 3.

When will The White Lotus season 3 be released?

While a premiere date for the show’s third season hasn’t been announced, the short amount of time between seasons 1 and 2 suggests viewers could be watching guests could be checking into The White Lotus as soon as fall 2023.

What are some theories about the plot of The White Lotus season 3?

In addition to the continuation of the evil Greg plot mentioned above, there have been lots of theories thrown around about season 3. One popular one is that we’ll see Daphne Sullivan, the more-than-meets-the-eye wife of certified douchebag finance bro Cameron, head off on a luxurious girls’ trip. Immediately, yes! While we’re here, let’s take a moment to appreciate the excellent acting skills of Meghann Fahy, the anti-long-suffering wife:

Naturally, if The White Lotus season 3 sees Daphne and her suitcase full of cropped corset tops host a lush girls’ vacay, Harper has to be on the guest list and then, if we’re lucky, they both divorce their husbands when they get home.

On the topic of Daphne, Forbes writer Tassi points out that the aforementioned evil Greg plot also suggests a potential link between awful Greg et al and… d-bag Cameron. “If we’re on the subject of ‘powerful, shady people,’ I also recall what Daphne said about Cameron’s partners, that they were real ‘psychopaths,’ and also some of the most powerful people in finance,” writes Tassi.“ While we have no direct link between them and Greg, I do wonder if there is literally some sort of evil Legion of Doom being built behind the scenes of The White Lotus with Greg at the apex, which does not seem like such a wild theory after last night.” Whoa.

The four official cycles of Fall 2023 fashion month (New York, London, Milan and Paris) may be over, but there is street style inspiration to be had yet! Enter: Tokyo Fashion Week where 58 brands are showing their Fall 2023 collections.

In Japan’s capital city, where cult-beloved brands like Sacai and Yohji Yamamoto have their roots, Tokyo Fashion Week show-goers attended the Fall 2023 presentations in exaggerated wide-leg pants and every kind of headwear you could dream up. Stylish pairs roamed the city in oversized tailoring, goth black leather ensembles, and masterful pattern mixing.

Hunter Schafer’s Oscars After-Party Look Consisted of a Single Feather

It’s hard to imagine how a single feather could go viral. But then along came Hunter Schafer wearing a white leather one across her breasts at the Vanity Fair Oscars 2023 after-party.

The top — which is more of a breast belt — was from the Ann Demeulemeester Fall 2023 collection which was unveiled exactly two weeks earlier in Paris. The Mugler fragrance model wore the piece with a white silk bias cut skirt.

Law Roach, the stylist who dresses Schafer’s Euphoria co-star Zendaya, chose the skin-baring look which was applauded on Schafer’s IG by Zendaya, Katy Perry, Julia Fox and Marc Jacobs. (P.S. if you missed FASHION’s cover story on Law Roach, you can find it here.)

So just who is Ann Demeulemeester? The Belgian designer emerged on the scene in the mid-’80s along with Martin Margiela and Dries Van Noten. The group were grads of the fashion program at Belgium’s Royal Academy of Fine Art and were known as the Antwerp Six. Demeulemeester retired in 2013. But her label clicked along with her dark, suit-y vibe for people whose definition of “sexy” is more intellectual than in-your-face.

But that seems to have changed with new creative director Ludovic de Saint Sernin. His topless gowns and sheer dresses (for men too!) showed more skin in one show than Demeulemeester likely did in her entire career. De Saint Sernin was a member of the Balmain design team before launching his own sexy, gender-fluid label in 2017. After his Demeulemeester debut, he told Vogue that he is ready to spread his wings. Hopefully he won’t fly too close to the sun.

After the party it’s the after-party, and the Vanity Fair after-party is the place to be once the Oscars wrap (if you’re an A-list celebrity with the golden invite, that is). Blessedly for those of us watching at home, the fashion at the Oscars after-parties is typically even more eye-catching than at the ceremony itself. If the level-headed, slightly cautious older sister attends the Academy Awards looking perfectly beautiful and polished, it’s her edgier little sister who shows up to the after-party. Think: daring sheer looks and saucy cutouts, men in low-cut suits and corsets, and more sparkle than the eye can handle.

All the Best Looks From the Oscars 2023 Red Carpet

If you had any doubt that in-person events were back to pre-pandemic lockdown strength, look no further than the 95th Academy Awards. Film’s biggest night is underway at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California and the celebrities brought their style (and beauty) A-games to the Oscars red carpet 2023.

The highly anticipated night kicked off with notable arrivals including Halle Bailey in an aqua blue corset gown fit for a Disney mermaid and Sofia Carson in a drop-waist Giambattista Valli princess gown. Vintage is trending at the 2023 Oscars with Rooney Mara sporting an ethereal Alexander McQueen from the label’s Fall 2008 ready-to-wear collection, Winnie Harlow making a bold statement in a buttercup yellow Armani Privé gown from their Spring 2005 couture collection and Vanessa Hudgens wowing in black and white vintage Chanel.

Volume and corsets are also proving popular on the 2023 Academy Awards red carpet, with standouts like Florence Pugh, Allison Williams and Fan Bingbing in the former and everyone from Lady Gaga and Jamie Lee Curtis to Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Zoe Saldana in the latter.

Last year’s Oscars red carpet standout was inarguably Zendaya in a cropped white blouse. Who will steal the Oscars red carpet spotlight tonight? (We could say Rihanna whose party of two looked divine in leather and mesh Alaïa and call it now, but we’ll be watching the red carpet closely for more exciting arrivals.)

Hollywood’s biggest night not only celebrates the crème de la crème in film but also serves as a runway for the most unforgettable beauty looks of the year. And the Oscars 2023 beauty looks did not disappoint.

With A-listers like Michelle Yeoh, Rihannna and Lady Gaga in attendance, it’s no surprise that this year’s crop of looks were nothing short of jaw-dropping. From sculptural hair moments spotted on Ashley Graham, Halle Bailey and Danai Gurira to Jessica Chastain and Elizabeth Olsen’s modern takes on Old Hollywood glamour, the who’s who of Tinseltown pulled out all the stops on the champagne (yes, champagne!) carpet.

In another excellent hair moment, Hsu floated across the champagne carpet in a bubblegum pink Valentino number and the loveliest side-swept curls. Oscars newcomer Tsu, who scored a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, completed the look with shimmering lids, a slick of pink lipstick and glowing skin.

Can we officially crown Florence Pugh the queen of the artistic updo? Absolutely we can. The British star wore her signature blonde locks in a dramatic twist that doubled as a chic micro-fringe. To finish the look, Pugh sported a tiny cat-eye flick with fluttering lashes and a subtle pink lip.

Angela Bassett’s monochromatic moment

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star and Oscar nominee Angela Bassett was the picture of regal elegance, donning an electrifying purple Moschino gown that matched her lilac lids perfectly. And of course, we would be remiss not to mention Bassett’s voluminous curls, created by celebrity hairstylist, Randy Stodghill with Olivia Garden products, which added plenty of wow factor to the look.

Pink was truly having a moment this Oscars evening, as Best Actress nominee Ana de Armas stunned onlookers with delightfully sparkly rose-gold lids and a shimmering pink lip. De Armas finished the look with sleek center-parted hair and a dazzling metallic Louis Vuitton gown that was simply *chef’s kiss*.

Fan Bingbing’s Hollywood glam

Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing oozed old school red carpet glamour with her ultra-dramatic emerald green cape and sparkly silver gown. And while we can go on forever about the ’fit, it was the hair and makeup that truly knocked it out of the park. Bingbing’s timeless finger waves, smoked-out shadow, dramatic wing and knockout red lip created a beauty moment for the books.

Oscar presenter Jessica Chastain brought the red carpet back to life with a swipe of Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution Lipstick in the shade (wait for it) Red Carpet Red. To add to her golden glow, MUA Kristofer Buckle used Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Glow Glide Highlighter in Moonlit Glow and a dab of the brand’s latest Matte Beauty Blush Wand in the shade Peach Pop. Perfection. For her pitch-perfect hair, celebrity Hairstylist Renato Campora used Hair Rituel by Sisley-Paris products and brushes give her red locks just the right amount of Hollywood va-va-voom.

Danai Gurira’s sky-high updo

There’s only one word to describe Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Danai Gurira’s Oscars updo: exquisite. The look, inspired by traditional African hairstyles, was created by hair legend Larry Sims, and is reminiscent of Lupita Nyong’o’s equally excellent beehive-esque updo created by Vernon Francois last year.

Andie MacDowell’s au naturel locks

Red carpet regular Andie MacDowell, who brought her daughter Rainey Qualley to the event, wore her signature silver curls in a laid-back chignon that defined easy elegance. It’s almost curtains for fashion month and with Milan, London, New York and Copenhagen fashion weeks in our rear view, it’s time to say a chic bonjour to Paris — and all the inspiring Paris street style 2023 the French capital has to offer.

At Paris fashion week Fall 2023, several street style trends have emerged. While pink was the colour du jour in New York, pops of energizing orange, electric blue, lime green and scarlet red are proving popular in Paris. Distressed details are also trending in the City of Lights, as are maxi coats, gender-neutral skirts, and punk-inspired accessories. While JW Anderson Bumper bags were favoured in London, the Coperni Swipe in all sizes and colour combinations is the the purse of choice in Paris. And if the crowd outside the Dior show is any indication, we may soon be witnessing the return of off-the-shoulder dresses.

The 2023 Oscar nominations were released on January 24 and there were, reliably, some lovely surprises (like Everything Everywhere All at Once snagging 11 nods) and bummer disappointments (like Viola Davis being shut out of the Best Actress category for her The Woman King performance). But we’d be remiss if we didn’t admit that the mere mention of the Academy Awards got us excited about the red carpet. Might be the haute couture shows happening in Paris right now, might be the fumes of fashion joy from the Golden Globes, but the March 12 Oscars can’t come soon enough. In preparation, we’re sharing FASHION editors picks for the best Oscars dresses ever. Read on for why these unforgettable Oscars looks will go down in history.

Zendaya in Valentino (2022)

For anyone who has ever questioned the power of fashion, let me introduce you to Zendaya. Before she met her stylist Law Roach, she was a young teen on the Disney Channel. Now? She’s won two Emmys and is the most in-demand actress/brand ambassador/general It girl on the planet. Roach built her brand from the ground up using independent designers and sheer talent, and this Valentino look from the 2022 Oscars feels like the pinnacle of their working relationship. Cher in Bob Mackie (1986)

And the award for Fashion Revenge goes to…Cher! The Bob Mackie creation might not be so shocking today, but in 1986 it ruffled more feathers than in the headdress that topped the wild and witchy look. Miffed at not being nominated for her role in Mask, the singer asked Mackie for a design that would convey her annoyance for not being taken seriously as an actress. We’ve seen many women sport tuxedos and suiting on the red carpet, but Billy Porter’s turn in a custom “tuxedo dress” by New York-based designer Christian Siriano stole the show in 2019. No stranger to going completely — and authentically — OTT with his event ensembles, Porter’s captivating look (a velvet tuxedo jacket and frilled, french-cuffed shirt mixed with a lush full-length velvet gown) was a major move forward for the notion of genderless dressing during one of the world’s most-viewed moments. Simply put, this Valentino Couture gown that Gemma Chan wore to the 2019 Oscars is a statement. There’s no hiding when you have a starched, ruffled collar emerging from billowing layers of punchy pink taffeta. Céline Dion goes down in the fashion hall of fame for her backwards and backless tuxedo and matching hat by John Galliano for Dior. More than 20 years ago, the look received backlash and was considered inappropriate on a red carpet dominated by glitter and gowns. Looking back, Dion’s game-changing ensemble was way ahead of its time — traditions and rules are meant to be broken! I’ll be the first to admit that I’m guilty of using the word iconic far too loosely, but Halle Berry’s Elie Saab number at the 2002 Academy Awards (the year she won Best Actress for her role in Monster’s Ball and became the first Black woman to win the award!) is definitely worthy of the title. Between the jaw-dropping (for 2002, at least) sheer panelling, the silk skirt in that unforgettable rich burgundy shade, the beautiful embroidery work and Berry’s pixie cut that’s equally iconic (sorry but also undeniably true!), it’ll forever be a red carpet look that lives in my head rent-free. —Souzan Michael Galway, contributor

Lauren Hutton in Halston (1975)

Maybe it’s the fact that I’m longing for a ridiculously glam night on the town, but I could cry a river gazing at this disco dream on gap-toothed babe Lauren Hutton. The magic of this Halston look is that while it’s emblematic of the disco era, it would look just as fun at a fancy fête today (swapping the chubby fur for a faux option, naturally) as it did in 1975. Those layers of pastel rainbow chiffon! The plunging neckline and skinny belt! The Best-Dressed Celebs at the 2023 SAG Awards

The 2023 SAG Awards took place in Los Angeles on February 26 and all you need to know is Zendaya’s slay was so major, everyone else got sent home. We kid, but the Euphoria star’s baby pink Valentino gown covered in rosettes (which she accessorized with Bulgari jewellery and ’60s-inspired hair and makeup, including exaggerated false lashes that would make Twiggy weep) was so good, the race for SAG Awards 2023 best dressed wasn’t even close. The actor was dressed for the award show by her longtime stylist, and FASHION’s November cover star, Law Roach. The SAG Awards serve came just a day after the two collaborated on two jaw-dropping looks for the NAACP Image Awards — a vintage 2002 Versace followed by a custom Prada set inspired by a 1993 look from the luxury house.

Zendaya wasn’t the only star who brought out the big guns for the SAG Awards, with nominees like Michelle Yeoh and Viola Davis and Cate Blanchett looking equally fetching in fresh-from-the-runway Schiaparelli couture, Valentino and Armani Privé, respectively. The gents didn’t disappoint either, with standout looks from Eddie Redmayne in an oversized pussy bow blouse and waisted trousers by Saint Laurent and Austin Butler in a cranberry Gucci suit that Elvis would have loved.

How My Jamaican Culture Has Helped Me To Not Fear Aging

The first time I saw 13 Going On 30 and watched Jenna Rink skip 17 years of her life because of a bad birthday party, I had one thought: she’s so real for that. The fact is “thirty, flirty, and thriving” sounded good to me at ten, and now, two years shy of the mark, it’s even more iconic. But not everyone is as excited for the next decade as I am.

If you pay attention to TikTok and social media, you know that age isn’t just a number, it’s a sometimes painful marker of identity. Whether it’s Gen Z-beloved straight jeans vs. millennial-favoured skinny jeans, there’s a huge pressure to both look like the group you belong to but — if you’re older than, say, 25 — never look your age. In the past year, almost every member of my late-twenties girl gang has freaked about fine lines, grey hairs, or the nebulous sensation of “feeling old.” For me, even though getting older has its scary moments, my Jamaican background helps keep things in perspective.

Jamaica is a small island with a big impact, especially in Toronto. You can smell Jamaican patties from Islington to Warden Station and hear the echo of Jamaican Patois in Toronto slang. Every summer, you can even see Jamaicans and other West Indians celebrating our communities in bright costumes at Caribana. But Jamaican culture is more than the food we eat and the way we talk: it’s who we are and who we choose to be at any age.

For as long as I can remember, my family members have expressed themselves through appearance. From my cousin Marsha’s blonde buzzcut to my brother’s tattoos, many Jamaicans enjoy being seen, period. While visiting my dad in New York last summer, we decided to take in a Mets game, each donning outfits that were quintessentially us. Even though I was feeling cute and summery in shorts and a crop top, I was 27 at the time and worried that a bare midriff was slowly becoming unbecoming. My dad’s outfit, however — a green mesh marina and baggy jeans with a green bandana tucked into his pocket — reminded me that my only job was to be myself.

“I don’t feel different or dress differently than I did in my thirties or forties” my dad says. Even though he’s approaching 60, you wouldn’t know it by looking at him. That’s because Jamaicans care about proudly being themselves than “respectably” being themselves. My dad’s commitment to this is a constant reminder that hiding your sense of style to gain acceptance is self-betrayal. So, instead of trying to look my age, I try to look like myself at whatever age I am, which means leaning into my imperfect aesthetic, my hyper-fixation on crop tops, and my collection of candy-shaped earrings.

Jamaicans are also known for taking their self-expression to the dance floor, no matter their age. Whether it’s the length of a skirt, a night at the club, or both, Jamaicans never feel “too old” to do something. My sisters and cousins are mothers and fathers in their thirties, and yet they still make time to show up and show out at their favourite clubs. This puts things into perspective for me and other over-25s who wrongfully dub “clubbing” as an undergrad thing that we’ve grown out of doing.

“In Jamaica, women still flaunt themselves and describe themselves as sexy regardless of their age,” my sister tells me. “They wear what they want, date who they want, and have fun how they want.” That’s because music, motion, and sex appeal are such important parts of Jamaican culture, which only get more important with age. It shouldn’t matter if you’re 25, 35, or 45, a night of music and dancing is always good for the soul. So rather than suppressing the part of me that misses dressing up, taking selfies, and going out to dance for hours, I’m going to honour it more and more with each year that comes.

Even though my pre-30 crew (and many others) might sometimes worry that the upcoming chapters of our lives will be more about “surviving” rather than “thriving,” I’m relying on my Jamaican sensibilities to guide me. It’s taken me so long to get to a place of pride and self-acceptance, and I’m not at all interested in losing it just because the TikTok police say 30 is too old to have fun. Instead of letting the internet tell you what to do, take advice from Jamaicans, and me in particular: Don’t wind down with age — turn up!

All the Exciting Street Style Looks From Milan Fashion Week

Milan Fashion Week is here and the street style looks we’re seeing outside the Fall 2023 ready-to-wear shows are a reliable melange of fashion-forward, polished — and a little bit over the top. A quick glance through snaps of the stylish show-goers and several trends were immediately obvious. The Fall 2023 Milan Fashion Week street style uniform includes cargo pockets, seen on everything from wide-leg trousers to mini-skirts. Wedge boots, especially colourful, bulbous confections, are seemingly a prerequisite to walk Milan’s charming streets. Feminine fabrics like sheer, flouncy chiffon and shiny satin are preferred. Denim must be worn head to toe, and special points for low-rise silhouettes, bleached-out treatments and lots of distressing (Y2K, baby!). Also, it appears that the Diesel renaissance is still going strong with the Italian brand’s wares figuring heavily into show-goers’ attire.

The Street Style at London Fashion Week Was So Good

Fashion month continues on the other side of the pond with the streets of London replete with quintessentially cool and quirky street style. Several trends emerged outside the Fall 2023 ready-to-wear shows, with motocross leather jackets, preppy silhouettes and cartoonish accessories, like the viral Loewe balloon sunglasses, dominating LFW street style. Speaking of viral, despite being available for a couple of years now, the famous Totême scarf jacket continues to be a fashion girl go-to.

Also evident on the cobblestone streets of the British capital? Londoners’ love for homegrown U.K. labels. The JW Anderson bumper bag made countless appearances in a range of shapes and colour combinations, while Chopova Lowena’s skirts were a fashionista fave.

And, as has come to be expected of the London fashion crowd, full and frothy Simone Rocha and Molly Goddard-esque ballgowns, pops of bold colour, crisp tailoring, and hits of plush texture, from shearling lining to Penny Lane-style shag-trim coats, figured popular when it came to Fall 2023 LFW street style.
